I got to go to San Francisco this weekend and I just love the sky scrapers there for some reason. The enormity of them never ceases to amaze me.

Active duty, U.S. Army Reserve and National Guard Soldiers from across the country face their final challenge June 9, 2017, during the Aircraft Command and Control evaluation during the U.S. Army's Rappel Master Course, taught at Fort Pickett by rappel masters assigned to the 183rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute. Heading home to Ladner from Victoria (on Vancouver Island (Canada)) today, there was enough fog that a lookout was posted at the front of the ferry. I spent the first half of the trip with a 180mm lens capturing the wonderful bleakness/richness of the fog. It is the long weekend, so there were a lot of small craft about, livening up our trip.

おみやげの違いについて
１）日本人は名物が好き。名物というと、観光目的地にしかないという意味で代
表的で、ユニークで、美味しく、突出しているご馳走です。例えば、山口だとフグで
す。一方、欧米人がもしましたら、観光目的地の普通という意味で代表的で、バリそ
ば・しりしり・けんちょう・瓦そば・山頭火（お酒）です。地物の人たちが普段から
食べている、中心的な料理です。言い換えれば、日本人は非日常である観光目的地の
非日常（特別のもの）を体験したいですが、欧米人はおそらく非日常である観光目的
地の日常（普通のもの）を体験したいです。（先輩研究あり）
２）日本人は「光栄欲」でツーショットで自己高揚（自慢）すると思われますの
で、できるだけ相手国の「光」と一緒に「シャッターチャンス」がほしいですが、欧
米人は話して、場合には貶して（下方比較して）自慢するので、毒としてのフグ・ゴ
ムみないこんにゃく・腐った納豆・辛い山葵（わさび）など、欧米人にとってかなら
ずしも美味しいと思われない全ての食べ物も、「あいつらこんなものを食べてい
る！」と「貶しチャンス」も好きかもしれません。
３）日本人はキャラが好きです（先輩研究あり）。しかし、そのなぜがまだ解明
されていません。
(ア)キャラは「可愛いから」というのが通説かもしれませんが、ディズニーの
キャラでも可愛く、他の要因もありましょう。下記の（イ）参照
(イ)グアムは日本人が多いですので、キャラが買われることが知らされている
が、ディズニーがほとんどです。しかしおそらく、日本人はその目的地特有のキャラ
がほしいでしょう。
(ウ)キャラがすきなのは、相手は思い入りがあり、相手のまたメーカーのもう一
つの顔として認識されて、愛情と品質と清潔さなどがつぎ込まれていると感じられる
から好かれます。
(エ)日本人がキャラが好きなのは、なぜ有生物が好きかは不明です、1つの理由
は、活きているように感じられるからです。そこで今日のゼミに皆に配った猫は万
カップにしがみつく珍しい「行動するお土産」でした。行動力があるように見えるう
お土産を提案することが考えられます。
(オ)日本人が神社からいただくお守り類はたぶんにお土産（宮笥）の起源だとい
う説があります。お守りの多くは鈴などがつけられて、音を出す。（たぶんに記号能
力＝シンボリック・パワーが内在していると感じたいからか）スーパー戦隊や仮面ラ
イダーなど、日本の変身ヒーローが集めるシンボルも音を出すことが多いです。まだ
ほとんど存在しないだろうと思いますが、音を出す（パッケージに入った）お土産な
ら好感度が高まる可能性があります！

(カ)神社で伝統的にもらわれてきた宮笥・神符（お守りやお札）は、神社の名前
に捺印されています。つまり現地の記号がついています。そこで、（先輩の研究あ
り）現地の、すなわち英語のネイミングがついていれば、日本語より魅力的だという
可能性があります。（先輩研究あり）
