Grain Tower Battery was constructed between 1879 and 1855 of granite in an Martello tower style. Unique by virtue that it was constructed off shore on a mud-spit in the River Medway, and only accessible by foot along a (muddy) brick causeway at low tide. The fort was initially armed with a 56lb gun and a pair of 32lb canon. Fifty five years after construction (1910 – 1912), the fort was upgraded prior to the outbreak of WW1 to accommodate two 4.7″ QF guns. The next upgrade came in 1940 when the two storey barrack block was constructed along with the Battery Observation Post and a twin 6" Quick Firing (QF) gun. The Battery has been listed since 1986 under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 for its special architectural and historic interest.

Out of our 8 days trip, we stayed at Hilton - Embassy Suites (Silicon Valley) for 4 nights/5 days. August 11-15, 2015.

It's a very nice accommodation, and highly recommended if you are travelling with family, or company of more than 4 people. At least an hour drive to San Francisco, if you don't mind driving.

Just like other Hilton Embassy Suites that we stayed at before, the hotel provides great breakfast, and happy hour. Also, the children love the in-door pool, the roomy suite, and of course the breakfast.

The hotel has a convenient business centre. It definitely came in handy, since we lost the power supply plug-in for my laptop, while travelling between Seaside Oregon to Eureka, CA.

We tried to find a replacement while in California, but just couldn't find one. We just waited until we got home to Vancouver, and used the plug-in from our Lexmark scanner.

Lastly, thanks to the management and staff of Hilton Embassy Suites, you definitely made our stay fun for all of us.

Ours was one of eight guest tents which merge into the landscape. They are roomy and comfortable but to visit the en suite bathroom at night involves leaving the tent and stepping out into the wild - awesome!

Cliffe Fort in Kent overlooks the entrance to the River Thames. Completed in 1870, construction was plagued with problems to do with the poor quality of ground, and the final design was smaller, housing ten guns in a mix of casemates and open barbettes as opposed to the planned thirteen. The fort could also accommodate up to 300 soldiers. Housing guns within casemates offered the greatest protection, and the casemates were granite faced and were fitted with iron shutters. A bank and ditch also protected the formidable fort on the exposed sea side.

Under the casemate level were two parallel tunnels, containing the usual features associated with ammunition storage. The lower levels are now badly flooded, while the upper levels and gun casemates are accessible.

By 1899 the fort was armed with two 12.5" RMLs (Rifled Muzzle Loaders), five 11" RMLs, two 4.7" guns or 6" guns in the open Battery, four 4 pdr QF (Quick Fire) guns in new concrete emplacements on the roof and a Brennan Torpedo launching station.

By the Second World War the forts role in coastal defence had diminished and it was primarily a heavy anti-aircraft battery, armed primarily with two 4" BL guns.

The fort was sold in the 1950's and has laid in a worsening state since then. Partly due to subsidence and the ingress of water.
