When I walked into the woods I promised myself I wouldn't pay attention to the squirrels. I was focusing on other subjects and didn't want to be bothered. I swear that this one was following me and was dying to have its picture taken. I couldn't resist so I shot him.

I was about to leave this area when a woman came up to me and asked if I want to see some Wood duck chicks. Really? I owe her a Starbucks.

Tawny Owls , large crop

This is considered the most beautiful bird in the western hemisphere, not sure about it but I certainly love it!

Here, a male Resplendent Quetzal flies towards its nest taking a juicy lizard, in beautiful Costa Rica.

as i watched him fly off, i thought to myself how much he looked like a pterodactyl.

Sparrowhawk male (2nd Autumn)

This little guy beat the Goshawk to the pigeon, and he held his own mantling when not one but two Buzzards , three times his size tried to muscle in on the meal. He mantled for about 10 mins and froze upright for at least half an hour till the Buzzards gave up and circled away....never a dull moment 😉

The banded demoiselle (Calopteryx splendens) is often found along slow-flowing streams and rivers. It is a Eurasian species occurring from the Atlantic coast eastwards to Lake Baikal and northwestern China. This is a common species throughout much of its range.

Demoiselles are large damselflies with quite broad wings and a butterfly-like flight. Males have metallic blue/green bodies and a dark blue-black band covering a section of each of their wings. Females have a metallic green body with a yellow-greenish tinge to their wings, no dark band but they have a small white dot almost at the tip of the wing. Found around ponds, lakes and slow-flowing rivers, canals and streams. Areas with lush emergent and herbaceous vegetation and waters that have muddy or silty bottoms are preferred. Avoids shaded areas and usually found around water near open meadows. (wikipedia)

I was delighted to photograph this male Banded Demoiselle in the National Botanic Gardens, Dublin recently. Found by my young fella while we were watching a Brown Hawker hunting over the ponds. A first for me.

This post is directed more toward Sony shooters who may be interested in the a9iii or the a1ii.

I decided to up my arsenal and received my first weapon a few days ago, the recently released a9iii. This camera is truly amazing. The form factor, which will be the same for the a1ii, is much improved. If you are interested in either of the new cameras you already know the details but one surprise to me is that the vertical battery grip fits the body much better than its predecessor. As I do with all new cameras, I took it outside yesterday to take some test shots through the ISO range to see when the noise became unusable. I’m still evaluating that but probably will do my best to stay below 6400. As I was shooting, I caught a bird out of the corner of my eye that landed on a nearby power pole. It was a Kestrel, my favorite falcon. What better opportunity to test out the camera’s pre-capture and speed boost. I could see immediately that I’d have to develop some muscle memory. Because I use back button focus, my thumb was busy on that button, my forefinger on the shutter button to activate pre-capture, and my middle finger on the new C5 button on the front of the camera to activate 120 frames per second. I imagine the hardest thing will be to press the C5 only when 120 fps are desired. A skill I hope to develop. You can’t see pre-capture at work until after the fact. My arms were getting a workout as the bird spent a long time on the power pole. Luckily, when it finally took off, I had the camera on it and the pre capture activated. When I reviewed the images, I recorded many frames of the takeoff, prior to fully pressing the shutter button. Amazing. How could I live without it! Thank you pre-Capture!
