Captured him/her outside of my window today, what a beutifull bird, unfortunately light was on the wrong side ))
Here’s a Red-bellied Woodpecker I caught at my neighbor’s feeder. They are our most common woodpeckers and have integrated nicely with humans, whether we like it or not. I’ve always wondered about their common name. Was there another species with a distinctive red belly that had usurped the name? Yes, there’s a tinge of red and if the bird’s pose is just right you can barely see it. But come on folks, we can come up with a better name. How about “red and white woodpecker”? Or, my pick: “Red-naped Woodpecker”? (Nape is the area behind the head.) Let’s vote! (Melanerpes carolinus) (Sony a9ii, 200-600mm @600, 1/2500 second, f/6.3, ISO 6400).
D6732 blasts through Kelling Heath along the North Norfolk Railway on Saturday 10th June 2023. The resident BR green 'Tractor' hauls passengers along the Poppy Line as part of their Mixed Traction Gala weekend. The prospect of blue skies across the day provided a perfect opportunity to visit the North Norfolk coast to capture a variety of traction on display this weekend. (Photo taken with pole)
Milpitas Bald Eagles;
The two chicks are sitting calmly when dinner time. The mother is looking around and make sure there is safe to feed the the chicks. This is the 4th years that they used the same nest. The eagles selected a towering redwood in the only group of tall trees in the area. And the nest, composed of thick sticks, sits atop a large horizontal limb about 60 feet above the school grounds.

D5631 is captured in the lush surroundings of Kelling Heath on Saturday 10th June 2023. The resident Class 31 based on the North Norfolk Railway leads the 2C01 0853 Holt to Sheringham service. While the livery and coaching stock are well before my time, the prestine condition of locomotive and coaching stock, combined with the location, make for a great combination. (Photo taken with pole)
Put together a windy rainy day and I’m bound to process some images that I never got around to. Here’s one from a trip in the fall of 2021 with my friends Greg and Ash, to Caddo Lake in Texas to kayak and photograph the fall cypress. I’m hoping to go back next year with these guys and maybe explore more of Texas and Louisiana. We kayaked every morning and afternoon and were greeted scenes like this. Yesterday, in sweltering 106-degree heat, I had a "Close Encounter of the Entomological Kind." A Sand Hammertail (Efferia albibarbis), also known as a robber fly, landed on my hand, quenching its thirst with my sweat. Luckily, my camera with a macro lens was close by and set up for a different project. I managed to capture a dozen photos before gently encouraging him to drink somewhere else.
