The White-throated Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) is an aquatic passerine bird found in Europe and the Middle East, also known as the European Dipper or just Dipper. The species is divided into several subspecies on colour differences, especially of the pectoral band. The Dipper of Great Britain and Ireland is known as the "Brown-Bellied" Dipper (C. c. gularis), while the Irish race is Cinclus cinclus hibernicus.

The Dipper is a rotund, short-tailed bird, dark above and white-breasted, closely associated with swiftly running rivers and streams or the lakes into which these fall. The Dipper often perches bobbing spasmodically with its short tail uplifted on the rocks round which the water swirls and tumbles.

It acquired its name from these sudden dips, not from its diving habit, though it dives as well as walks into the water. It flies rapidly and straight, its short wings whirring swiftly and without pauses or glides, calling a shrill zil, zil, zil. It will then either drop on the water and dive or plunge in with a small splash. From a perch it will walk into the water and deliberately submerge, but there is no truth in the assertion that it can defy the laws of specific gravity and walk along the bottom.

A bike discarded in the Tolka River in Griffith Park near Dublin city centre is used as a perch by a local Dipper. The recent rains have pushed a lot of leaf litter and other debris into the bike. It is a shame how we treat our river systems in Ireland (and elsewhere).

The Northern Wheatear or Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) is a small passerine bird and is the most widespread member of the wheatear genus Oenanthe in Europe and Asia. The Northern Wheatear makes one of the longest journeys of any small bird, crossing ocean, ice, and desert. It migrates from Sub-Saharan Africa in Spring over a vast area of the northern hemisphere that includes northern and central Asia, Europe, Greenland, Alaska, and parts of Canada. In Autumn all return to Africa, where their ancestors had wintered. Arguably, some of the birds that breed in north Asia could take a shorter route and winter in south Asia; however, their inherited inclination to migrate takes them back to Africa.

Birds of the large, bright Greenland race, leucorhoa, makes one of the longest transoceanic crossings of any passerine. In spring most migrate along a route (commonly used by waders and waterfowl) from Africa via continental Europe, the British Isles, and Iceland to Greenland. However, autumn sightings from ships suggest that some birds cross the North Atlantic directly from Canada and Greenland to southwest Europe (a distance of up to 2500 km). (wikipedia)

This is fresh juvenile bird migrating south through Ireland to Africa during the autumn, stopping off on the beach near Carne in Co. Wexford along the way. Always a buzz seeing a Wheatear during migration time.

A time to wind down and relax, no garish neon signs and away from all hustle and bustle. Just gentle sounds of whispers and footsteps instead of loud talking, engine hum and road noise.

A little alley in a most historical section of an ancient city but unlike some ancient cities I’ve been to in the old world, there is little sign of squalor or decay.

Meanwhile, the independent OM-1 sensor test data is finally out, as expected it is no better than the E-M1 Mkii and later cameras; www.flickr.com/photos/86145600@N07/51875512730/in/datepos...

Taken in the right context however, the 24mp Sony A9/A9ii and 45mp Nikon Z9 stacked sensor cameras all exhibited lower Dynamic Range (DR) than their corresponding 24mp (A7III) and 45mp (Z7/Z7ii) non-stacked sensor bodies. The fact that the stacked sensor 20mp OM-1 has similar but not lower DR than its non stacked 20mp brethrens is an achievement although this probably has something to do with the OM-1 sensor being BSI while the E-M1 MKii/iii and E-M1X are all non-BSI.

The OM-1’s stacked sensor should finally bring meaningful upgrade to m43 AF subject tracking (C-AF) which was never as great as the manufacturer and shills claimed and it has fallen much behind competitors with stacked sensors.

Personally, the OM-1 has not made much further inroads on computational photography which is unfortunate given its speedier pipeline and slightly improved stabilization even though Hand-Held High Resolution (HHHR) results do look better and processing time halved.

For those of us using m43 for slower paced subjects, the E-M1 Mkii would suffice and good condition lightly used units can be found for ⅓ the OM-1’s current retail price.

For non-sports m43 shooters and given that sensor tech has stalled, the only meaningful future upgrade will be when m43 moves to 14bit color depth. Those who like to claim that there’s no difference between 12bit vs 14bit don’t really know what they are talking about.

Extrapolating a little, the upcoming A7RV would do nicely with a FF sized OM-1 stacked sensor (effectively 20.4mp; total mp=22.9) at around 87mp, provided Sony stays away from the annoying fully articulated swivel screen for their R series!

The Black Guillemot or Tystie (Cepphus grylle) is a medium-sized alcid.

Adult birds have black bodies with a white wing patch, a thin dark bill, and red legs and feet. They show white wing linings in flight. In winter, the upperparts are pale grey and the underparts are white. The wings remain black with the large white patch on the inner wing.

Their breeding habitat is rocky shores, cliffs and islands on northern Atlantic coasts in eastern North America as far south as Maine, and in western Europe as far south as Ireland. They are one of the few birds to breed on Surtsey, Iceland a new volcanic island. In the UK it is a fairly common breeding bird in western and northern Scotland and Ireland. In the rest of Great Britain they only breed at St. Bees Head in Cumbria, the Isle of Man and on east Anglesey in north Wales. Some birds breed in Alaska where their range overlaps with the similar Pigeon Guillemot.

These birds often overwinter in their breeding areas, moving to open waters if necessary, but usually not migrating very far south.

They dive for food from the surface, swimming underwater. They mainly eat fish and crustaceans, also some mollusks, insects and plant material. (wikipedia)

The Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea) has a circumpolar breeding distribution covering the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of Europe (as far south as Brittany), Asia, and North America (as far south as Massachusetts). The species is strongly migratory, seeing two summers each year as it migrates along a convoluted route from its northern breeding grounds to the Antarctic coast for the southern summer and back again about six months later. Recent studies have shown average annual round-trip lengths of about 70,900 km (44,100 mi) for birds nesting in Iceland and Greenland and about 48,700 km (30,300 mi) for birds nesting in the Netherlands. These are by far the longest migrations known in the animal kingdom. The Arctic tern nests once every one to three years (depending on its mating cycle).

The beak is dark red, as are the short legs and webbed feet. Like most terns, the Arctic tern has high aspect ratio wings and a tail with a deep fork. The adult plumage is grey above, with a black nape and crown and white cheeks. The upperwings are pale grey, with the area near the wingtip being translucent. The tail is white, and the underparts pale grey. Both sexes are similar in appearance. The winter plumage is similar, but the crown is whiter and the bills are darker. (wikipedia)

This species is a summer visitor from March to September to all Irish coasts. Winters off south Africa and as far south as Antarctica. This displaying adult was photographed (under license) on Dalkey Island, Dublin Bay.
