Into Sandwich before then for a wander and drop off the orchid picture for framing.

Its been a while since we were in the town, and lots to see and snap.

A good two hours spent wandering around, randomly snapping.

-------------------------------------------

Sandwich is a historic town and civil parish in the Dover District of Kent, south-east England. It lies on the River Stour and has a population of 4,985.[1] Sandwich was one of the Cinque Ports and still has many original medieval buildings, including several listed public houses and gates in the old town walls, churches, almshouses and the White Mill. While once a major port, it is now two miles from the sea due to the disappearance of the Wantsum Channel. Its historic centre has been preserved.[2] Sandwich Bay is home to nature reserves and two world-class golf courses, Royal St George's and Prince's. The town is also home to many educational and cultural events. Sandwich also gave its name to the food by way of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, and the word sandwich is now found in several languages.

Before Sandwich became a Cinque Port, the ancient Saxon town of Stonar on the bank of the Wantsum estuary, but on the opposite side of the mouth of the River Stour, was already well established. It remained a place of considerable importance but it disappeared almost without trace in the 14th century. The ruins of the major Roman fort of Richborough are close by. It was the landing place of the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43.[4] In 2008, an archaeological dig proved that this was a defensive site of a Roman beachhead, protecting 700 metres of coast.[5]

In 1028 King Canute (c. 995–1035) granted a charter to the monks of Christ Church, Canterbury, to operate a ferry across the river and collect tolls. In 1192, returning from the Third Crusade, Richard the Lionheart was jailed by the Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI. Henry released Richard in February 1194. On 13 March 1194, Richard landed at the port of Sandwich and came back to England.[6] On 21 May 1216, Prince Louis of France landed at Sandwich in support of the First Barons' War against King John.[7][failed verification] The Battle of Sandwich occurred just off the coast in 1217.

The Port of Sandwich is no stranger to odd events in English history. It was here that the first captive elephant was landed in England by the emperor Claudius.[8] Later another elephant was landed here, in 1255. The prize beast arrived at Sandwich quayside, delivered as a gift to the English monarch Henry III from the French king, and was then taken on foot to the king's menagerie in the Tower of London. The journey through Kent is reported to have proceeded without incident, except when a bull in a field by the roadside took umbrage at the great beast passing and attacked it. In one move, the animal was thrown by the elephant and killed outright.

The Guildhall, in the town square, was built in 1579. Work in 1812 encased the building in yellow brick, this was removed 100 years later in 1912, when the south-west wing was also added. Further alterations were undertaken later in the 20th century. It contains antique panelling and paintings, particularly within the council chamber. It is a Grade II* listed building.[33] It includes a stained glass window in the courtroom, showing Queen Elizabeth I arriving at Sandown Gate in 1573, which was added in 1906.[34] The courtroom is still used regularly for civic functions, such as 'Mayor-making', and available to hire as a wedding venue.[35][36]

The Admiral Owen is a pub in a two-storey, 15th century timber-framed building. It was refronted in the 18th century, but this work preserved the overhang of its first floor on a Bressummer and massive corner post with three brackets.[37] The nearby Crispin Inn was originally called the Crispin and Crispianus. It has similar timber framing and was built in the 16th century.[38] Across the road on the quay is the Bell Hotel, which underwent major rebuilding in the 18th and 19th centuries. There has been a Bell Inn on the quay since the 14th century.[39]

The three pubs cluster around The Barbican which was built in the late 14th century. It consists of 2 round towers, with chequered work of stone and flints. A narrow road passes between the towers with a semi-circular timber barrel roof over it. A small 2-storeyed 20th-century house built on to north side of the north west tower was occupied by the toll collector for the bridge.[40] The Sandwich Toll Bridge was built in 1773 of Portland stone with a Dutch type timber raised platform which was replaced in 1892 with an iron swing bridge.

An old mansion of Pathuriagthata

Pathuriaghata is a neighbourhood of North Kolkata known to be one of the oldest residential areas in the city.

Durga Pujas of zamindar houses of North Kolkata

Some remarkable Durga Pujas are still held privately in several zamindar families, some of whom were very affluent and famous in their glorious past, especially during the British Colonial period. Their financial conditions are not affluent, as it was in their golden periods (because the Zamindari system was abolished post independence). The passage of time might have dimmed the ostentatious display of wealth, yet they have retained the old aristocratic flavour. They perform the Puja with utmost dedication maintaining all the rituals. Some of the Pujas are even 200+ or 300+ years old. Every family member gathers during this period to celebrate once in a year.

Most of these houses have their own “Thakur Dalan’ (shrine), a public courtyard often with pillars surrounded with verandahs reflecting Indo- European architecture.

Each family has their own traditional form of Idol made by “Karmakars/Potuas” (the makers of the idols) for generations.

I ventured from south to north of Kolkata on the day on “Saptami” this year to have a glimpse of some of these houses to experience some age-old traditional culture of Bengal.

I explored a rich heritage and a system of belief and reverence, and of course some mesmerising architecture.

I realised once more that I was born in one of the finest cities in the world. A city of humanity, and a rich cultural heritage.

Durga Puja

Durga Puja is an annual festival celebrated in September or October, most notably in Kolkata, in West Bengal of India, but also in other parts of India and amongst the Bengali diaspora. It marks the ten-day worship of the Hindu mother-goddess Durga. In the months preceding the festival, small artisanal workshops sculpt images of Durga and her family using unfired clay pulled from the Ganga River. The worship of the goddess then begins on the inaugural day of Mahalaya, when eyes are painted onto the clay images to bring the goddess to life. It ends on the tenth day, when the images are immersed in the river from where the clay came. Thus, the festival has also come to signify ‘home-coming’ or a seasonal return to one’s roots.

The meaning of ‘Durga’

Durga Puja is seen as the best instance of the public performance of religion and art, and as a thriving ground for collaborative artists and designers.

Durga, meaning "the inaccessible" or "the invincible", is a popular fierce form of the Hindu Goddess or Devi. She is depicted with multiple arms, carrying various weapons and riding a ferocious lion( in Bengal). She is pictured as battling or slaying demons, particularly Mahishasura, the buffalo demon.

Her triumph as Mahishasura Mardini, Slayer of the buffalo Demon is a central episode of the scripture Devi Mahatmya. Her victory is celebrated annually in the festivals of Durga Puja.

**In December 2021, 'Durga Puja in Kolkata' was inscribed in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Worked from 10am to 8pm today so no real scope for a picture. It's been a long couple of days so time to enjoy one of these.

"If you happen to see a torrent of merry folks from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds dancing their way through downtown Linz while lip-syncing a blaring playback of ABBA’s hit song Take A Chance on Me, then you might think that Mardi Gras is awfully late this year or mass lunacy has broken out. But never mind, what’s underway is merely a collective emotional experiment."

André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri (1819 - 1889) a self-taught daguerreotypist, researched and improved upon the existing collodion-on-glass negative process, which he outlined in his first publication, Manuel Opératoire de Photographie sur Collodion Instantané, 1853. That same year, he returned to Paris and opened the largest studio in Paris, which spread across two floors. It was there that he introduced his carte-de-visite portraits which were a great financial success. For the 1855 Paris Exposition Universelle, he formed the Société du Palais de l'Industrie and obtained the rights to photograph all the products and works of art exhibited at the Exposition. Eder writes "Disdéri was considered the outstanding portrait photographer of his time in Paris. Napoleon III appointed him court photographer. In 1861, he instructed French officers in photography under orders from the minister of war. Disdéri's popularity is best shown by the fact that his character was introduced in 1861 as a star attraction on the stage of a small vaudeville theater in Paris by a realistic representation featuring his bald head and tremendous beard."

Dewey Beach, Delaware, USA

Dewey Beach lies on a small strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and Rehoboth Bay, is about one mile long and two blocks wide. Despite its small size and low year-round population of about 300, it is not uncommon for 30,000 to descend upon the town during summer weekends. Numerous bars and restaurants line Coastal Highway (Delaware Route 1), the town's main street.

The town of Dewey Beach, Delaware is a frequent summer vacation destination for Washington, D.C., residents (121.78 miles / 2 hrs 46 mins from The White House)

Delaware it the second-smallest state in the United States after Rhode Island.

The town hosts the Dewey Beach Music Conference during the last weekend of September. This event began in 2002 and has been a huge draw for unsigned bands from all over the country.

In 2011, the NRDC Natural Resources Defense Council awarded Dewey Beach with a 5-Star rating in water quality.

It is believed that the name was given to Dewey Beach following the 1898 Battle of Manilla (Spanish–American War) when Admiral George Dewey became a national hero.

FKA-A bogie 'Megrafet' intermodal twin low platform flat No.81 70 4908 078-8 of EWS at Leamington Spa, 27 September 2014. These FKA-A's were built by Thrall (York) in 1999.

So I love the Janay sculpt and her paint even if it’s 2000s lipliner, but I hated how bulbous her head looks next to my other IT dolls, and her default hair is super dry and thin feeling.

I’m planning to acetone shrink her and reroot her, since her head is currently *hard*, I figure slow shrinking her will leave her head soft enough for a day or so when I plug in new hair.

Imagine to my shock seeing her rooting pattern is literally just her hairline, parting and a drunk wiggle near the top. Here’s to hoping I can add new rooting holes without destroying my wrist when I pull her out of the acetone mixture heh.
