Looking down from the summit of Ben MacDui into Glen Dee, with Carn a' Mhaim on the left of the Glen and The Devils' Point to the right. The river Dee flows down the Glen eventually reaching the North Sea through Aberdeen harbour. We now have to drop down to the end of the ridge, using the boulder strewn slope appearing left of picture, to start the climb to Carn a' Mhaim. It's a long drop!!

Ben Macdui is the UK's 2nd highest peak (second only to Ben Nevis) and stands at 1309m (4294ft). After descending from this Munro we make a climb to the 2nd Munro of the day, Carn a' Mhaim (pronounced Carn-ah-Vame) at 1037m (3402ft).

It was a long time ago that i desired to see Machu Picchu. This

dream was realized in 2018.

This incredible Inca city perched in the mountains appeared to my amazed eyes after one day of fantastic hiking on the Inca trail.

It was late afternoon and an exceptional light bathed the entire site.

Finally, the sunset behind the mountains gave us a breathtaking view of the city.

How not to think about Pablo Neruda's poem "The Heights of Machu Picchu" and what he wrote elsewhere on Machu Picchu:

"Machu Picchu is a trip to the serenity of the soul, to the eternal fusion with the cosmos, where we feel our fragility.

It is one of the greatest marvels of South America. A resting place of butterflies in the epicentre of the great circle of life. One more miracle."

Light painting with Sabine.R as the "grand finale" of a photowalk at the Zitadelle Spandau / Spandau Citadel. As before, Sabine painted the orb while I was operating our cameras. This time I managed to capture the whole orb (the one before taken at a previous photowalk had been only half an orb, because I had made a mistake with the exposure on my camera; please see first comment). This orb still isn't perfectly captured, because I was a little too late with stopping the long exposure on my camera, but I actually like the colourful, rhythmic "afterglow" of Sabine's multicolour light painting flashlight, because it reminds me of a heartbeat as seen on a medical monitor. The vital signs look good, don't you agree?

====================

Good bye, Tromso (ha det in norwegian); picture taken from our Tromso-Copenhague SAS flight.

I think it's about time that I start to post some of the photos I took way back in July '18 at the Tierpark Berlin during a very nice photowalk with Sabine.R and marionrosengarten.

The gibbon has been voted "Zootier des Jahres 2019" (zoo animal of the year 2019) in Germany. Unknown to most of us, gibbons, who are hominids / family Hylobatidae (I didn't know that), are the most threatened species of smaller apes in the world. Especially significant habitat loss, excessive trade with gibbons as extravagant "articles of food" or "medicine" pose huge problems to the "singing climbers", plus the fact that baby gibbons are often sold as pets (after their mothers have been killed). The species protection campaign "Zootier des Jahres" supports two important gibbon protection programmes, one in Laos ("Project Anoulak"), and one in Vietnam.

For more info on gibbons, please check the Tierpark website (English):

www.tierpark-berlin.de/en/animals/details/white-handed-gi...

And Wikipedia:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibbon

Light conditions on that day weren't good, it was a cloudy day with very diffuse and scattered "light", so the three of us struggled to get sharp and crisp captures, and this, while "OK sharp", though not sharp all over, was also rather grainy, especially the background, which is why I applied a soft glow effect to it, but masked the gibbon and his climbing frame out for better details.

Happy (Sliders) Sunday, Everyone, and have a relaxed new week ahead :-)

The pointe Saint-Mathieu (Lok Mazé in Breton) is a headland located near Le Conquet in the territory of the commune of Plougonvelin in France, flanked by 20m high cliffs.

The point also has a 56m high lighthouse, built in 1835.

The abbey held many privileges - right to rushes, right to furnaces, rights to a twelfth of jet, right to markets, right to fairs (Henry IV of France had instituted, in 1602, 5 annual fairs and a weekly market), right to measure wheat and wine, etc...

In 1157 Hervé de Léon accorded the abbey the right of flotsam and jetsam on wrecks in all his fiefdoms; in 1390 the abbey received the right to take 10% of the hull, cargo and rigging of wrecked ships. To this right were added the right of remains, confirmed in 1602 by royal letters patent. He accorded this right to the monks for "all those who perish in the sea, and on the coasts at Saint Mathieu, Plougonvelin and le Conquet".

Today abandoned, the Abbaye Saint-Mathieu de Fine-Terre, was said to have held the skull of the apostle Matthew, now lost in the ocean off the point. Its ruins served as a set for the summer TV saga Dolmen.

Crazy Tuesday: #NEW

Laowa C-Dreamer 7.5 F/2 | Photowalk with Sabine.R

Not taken this week, but I didn't get around to go out on a photowalk (ghastly weather, grey days, too) with my brand NEW ultra wide-angle lens, the Laowa C-Dreamer 7,5mm F/2. However, this one was taken with that new lens, so I hope it qualifies; I promise that I will take the capture in the week after a new theme will be announced the next time I participate :-)

Now for the title: You might wonder why I chose "Topless" as a title. Well, if you take a look at my capture of the Berliner Fernsehturm (Berlin TV Tower) taken from the platform of the Park Inn Hotel (please see first comment), and you take a closer look at the TV Tower's base in that capture, you will get an idea what this building is - yes, right: it's the TV Tower's base building complex which is used as an exhibition center ("Body Worlds", "Little BIG City"), it also houses restaurants and shops; the building on the right is the city hall of Berlin, known as Rotes Rathaus (Red City Hall). But where is the TV Tower? I seriously debated with myself whether I could actually dare to remove it from the capture or not. In the end I decided to upload the retouched version, as it gives the building a lighter, aerier look, almost that of a spaceship that has just landed. With the TV Tower (which you would normally see on the left upper corner behind the base building) it looked like a building on a stick from this point of view, and you wouldn't have seen much of the tower anyway. Please forgive my little Photoshop shenanigan :-) After all, photos don't lie, do they ;-) ?

And because two are always better than one, I would like to wish you all a very Happy 2019 once again, and a relaxed first week of January as well :-)

Oben ohne

NGC 6888 - Crescent Nebula (and open cluster IC 4996).

The Crescent Nebular was formed when the stellar wind of Wolf–Rayet star WR 136 collided with material the star ejected during its super red giant phase. Wolf–Rayet stars are a rare set of stars with strong stellar winds and surface temperatures as high as 200,000 K. This faint emission nebula is located along the plane of the Milky Way in the constellation Cygnus.

With an apparent diameter of 1/3 of a degree - a little smaller than the moon - and a distance of 5k light-years, this nebular is approximately 25 light-years in diameter. At abut 15x the mass of our sun, and 4.7 Myrs old, WR 136 is nearing the end its life - which will end in a bang, as a supernova.

The Schynige Platte. Canton of Bern. Switzerland. September 4, 2018. izakigur. 2018:09:04 12:15:58 . No. 4398 .

"The Schynige Platte (Scheinige Platte on the old Siegfried Map)[1] is a small mountain ridge and a viewpoint in the Bernese Highlands and belongs to the Schwarzhorn group. The mountain range consists of three peaks: Gumihorn (2,099 m (6,886 ft)), Tuba (2,076 m (6,811 ft)), and the closest summit next to the viewpoint, Geiss (2,067 metres (6,781 ft)). The viewpoint lies at an altitude of about 2,000 metres (7,000 ft), at the western end of a prominent ridge of the Schwarzhorn group, which separates the valley of the Schwarze Lütschine from Lake Brienz.

It is notable for its hotel and, since 1893, its mountain railway, one of the highest in Switzerland. In good weather conditions there are views to many surrounding mountains, including the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, and others giants of the Bernese Alps. Also, the town of Interlaken and the two great lakes of Thun and Brienz are visible to the north, 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) lower.

The area is accessible via the Schynige Platte railway, which runs from Wilderswil, where connection is made with Bernese Oberland railway trains from Interlaken. The railway reaches a height of 1,967 metres (6,453 ft) at the terminus station, on the south-facing slopes of Geiss[citation needed] summit. Southwest of the station is a hotel and mountain restaurant, at a height of 1,983 metres (6,506 ft). Northeast of the station is the Schynige Platte alpine botanical garden, specialising in the display of, and research into, the high altitude flora of Switzerland.

A number of short loop trails extend north from the train station, reaching several view points, all within one kilometre from each other. Directly above the station and hotel, and overlooking the valleys of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, is the Geiss summit (2,067 metres (6,781 ft))[citation needed]. Further north, and overlooking Interlaken and the two great lakes, are the Tuba (2,076 metres (6,811 ft)) and Oberberghorn (2,069 metres (6,788 ft)) summits. The highest summit in the Schynige Platte area, between the Daube and Geiss summits, the tower-like Gumihorn peak (2,099 metres (6,886 ft)), cannot be reached by pedestrians. The Schynige Platte is also the starting point for the popular hiking trails to Loucherhorn, Faulhorn or First which is connected to Grindelwald by a gondola lift."

One of the many 'water features' along the Eastside Trail on Mount Rainier is Deer Creek. Water so unbelievably clear and cold and oh yeah, rocks! :-)

blow it up and step inside, I got my feet wet so you don't have to.... :-) (not really, plenty of rocks!)

About half way up Sgor Mor now which presents a fine view of the magnificent Glen Lui with the Munro mountain tops of Carn a'Mhaim and Ben Macdui behind that to the left of picture. One final push and we'll be at the summit!

At a height of 2667 feet (813 meters), Sgor Mor doesn't quite qualify as a Munro as it's 333 feet (111 meters) short, but it is a Corbett and offers some great views of the Cairngorms.

From the 8th century BC. the settlements of the surrounding hills united and the city of Rome was founded. Trajan's Forum was the last built and also largest of the five imperial and public squares of Rome. In 112 it was opened to celebrate the conquest of Dacia. The forum was financed with the war booty. However, the complex was only completed in the year 143. The square, which had the classic rectangular shape, was entered by walking under a triumphal arch. On both sides of the square there were colonnades, at the rear it was closed by the Basilica Ulpia. In front of the basilica there was an impressive equestrian statue of the emperor, while behind the basilica the Column of Trajan rose. The column is 38 meters high and can be seen from afar, but you can only admire the beautiful decorations up close. The beautiful monument is made of marble from Carrara and decorated with a frieze that represents the victory of Trajan on the rebellious Dacia. The Forum of Trajan is near the center of Rome. The nearest metro station is the station at the Colosseum at a five minute walk.

We visit Rome on a hot summersday and temperatures soar to over 40ºC. Photo of the Forum of Trajan. The Forum is one of the imperial forums in Rome. According to many, this forum was the most impressive of all. We took it slow amid region’s most intense heatwave.

From the 8th century BC. the settlements of the surrounding hills united and the city of Rome was founded. The Forum Romanum also known as Foro Romano, is a plaza surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the center of the city of Rome. The Arch of Septimius Severus at the Roman Forum is a white marble triumphal arch dedicated in AD 203 to the Parthian victories. The Arch is about 23 metres in height. The Arch stands close to the foot of the Capitoline Hill. A flight of steps originally led to the central opening. Over the centuries, the ground level on the forum had risen considerably. The lower part of the Arch of Septimius Severus was under the ground, so that the bow seemed to be much lower. In the Middle Ages, the arch was partially built into a nearby church and a fortress. Because of this, the arch never broke down what has happened with many other ancient monuments. In the 18th century the large excavations on the Forum started and the arch was restored to its former state. It is now one of the most remarkable Roman structures left over at the Forum.

The Arch of Septimius Severus, erected in AD 203, stands in Rome. The triple triumphal arch was one of the most richly decorated of its type and even today, although badly damaged, it stands in the Forum Romanum as a lasting and imposing monument to Roman vanity. The Temple of Saturn on the right side was an ancient Roman temple to the god Saturn. Its ruins stand at the foot of the Capitoline Hill and is traditionally dated to 497 BC. We visit Rome on a hot summersday and temperatures soar to over 40ºC. We took it slow amid region’s most intense heatwave.

It's hard to explain the feeling when you first see the Grand Canyon. It's so vast and magnificent it overwhelms the senses. A photo does not justify it's impact, it's like a mountain in reverse. You are at the top of this huge flat plateau and suddenly there it is WOW!

With elevations between 5000-7000ft. the weather conditions can be extreme. It was cold at the top 37F or 2.8C and very windy, (more on the wind with a later photo).

We were here to hike and it's a LONG way down about 9 miles, and scary in places. You can go all the way down to the Colorado River but not down and up in one day, unless you want to die. Hiking down with camping gear is very tough, but there are trails suitable for most including the rim trail which is suitable for bike and wheelchairs. We hiked the rim trail and it offers spectacular views from the top. The bus system in the Park is superb they come every ten minutes you hop on an off at various viewing points. A brilliant way to visit the Grand Canyon if you can't hike down.

You can travel down on a mule like the ones here they have a guide and the mules are perfect animals for this terrain. (not for a novice rider).

On our first hike we tackled The South Kaibab Trail. This shot of the mules was near the top. Our journey had begun.

I decided it was a good idea to take a picture of the actual hiking trail itself to remember what the hiking conditions were like to get these amazing views (even though you can get nearly equivalent views from the roadway itself - HA!). Also, for those who have never been to Yosemite, it is impossible to impress the scale of these mountains. El Capitan, the prominent perpendicular cliff to the left-center of the image, is over 2.5 miles away from the camera, and the camera is not zoomed at all. Just to give myself some perspective, I picked a point near Harvard University on Google Maps that was 2.5 miles away from the Prudential Center (as the bird flies), and street view'd the Pru over the Charles River. You could see it, but it was a tiny speck in the distance. Here's the link if you're interested: goo.gl/maps/AyBd7Dp6FQ12 . Here is the equivalent distance street view (assuming same zoom on the street view camera) from 2.5 miles from El Capitan (and much further from the other features like Half Dome): goo.gl/maps/Pdqwjyzopun

I didn't try to take art photos of flowers (they are very beautiful of course 🌼), but I love flower photos where flowers in their own natural surroundings as I see them in reality... with grass etc. 🌷

We discover below the beautiful castle of Berzé-Le-Châtel. The view from the top let us admire the full extent and architecture of this very well preserved fortress.

This source draws its name from the Roman era.

According to local tradition, the Roman lord Fussiacus established his camp near the source, hence the name of the village of Fussiacus, which became Fuissey and finally Fuissé.

The washhouse and the fountain date from 1722. The washhouse was rebuilt in 1848. This source never goes dry.
