What's one's best photo of the whole year? I definitely have a few favorites from 2021 but this one is close to home and the scene made me happy. It's on a 4-mile walking loop we circle several times a year but on this particular day in early fall it all came together. There were hues of green everywhere and I think it was this lushness that made me raise my camera.

Hope you enjoy. Happy New Year Everyone! :-) ... #etbtsy

Photographed with a Nikon N75 35mm camera on Kodak Portra 400 color negative film and developed in Arista C-41.

This is picture 1 in a series of three pictures taken at this place. Läckö Castle (Swedish: Läckö Slott) is a medieval castle in Sweden, located on Kållandsö island on Lake Vänern, 25 kilometers north of Lidköping in Västergötland, Sweden. Summer 2021

Kinetic Photograph made with one single long exposure shot, printed straight out of camera.

If you’d like to read more details about how the shot is made see below. And for more of my kinetic photographs here’s my set, "Drawing with Light"

Kinetic: Relating to, caused by, or producing motion.

These are called “Kinetic” photographs because there is motion, energy, and movement involved, specifically my and the camera’s movements.

I choose a light source and/or subject, set my camera for a long exposure (typically around 4 seconds), focus on my subject and push the shutter button. When the shutter opens I move the camera around with my hands...large, sweeping, dramatic movements. And then I will literally throw the camera several feet up into the air, most times imparting a spinning or whirling motion to it as I hurl it upward. I may throw the camera several times and also utilize hand-held motion several times in one photo. None of these are Photoshopped, layered, or a composite photo...what you see occurs in one shot, one take.

Aren’t I afraid that I will drop and break my camera? For regular followers of my photostream and this series you will know that I have already done so. This little camera has been dropped many times, and broken once when dropped on concrete outside. It still functions...not so well for regular photographs, but superbly for more kinetic work.

Macro Mondays: "Holes"

I took a colander, turned it upside down with a light inside the bowl. The hole pattern is six pointed stars.

The image is about 6 cm (2.25 inches) on the long edge.

I'm sure it could be better for all kinds of reasons, but as anyone familiar with that neck of the woods knows all too well, its really windy and not easy to get a long exposure. The fact that the arrows on the carriageway are fairly sharp is a bit of a miracle in the circumstances.

One of my worst all time experiences on a motorcycle was on this stretch of road in very windy conditions and it was 9 months before I rode a bike again.

I had an almost as traumatic experience whilst I was taking this but I'm not going to elaborate...

Bodie Island Lighthouse, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Outer Banks, North Carolina

"To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." ~ Luke 1:79

The Graveyard of the Atlantic is well named. Along the Outer Banks of North Carolina, navigational hazards off Cape Hatteras have caused the loss of over 5,000 ships since 1526...Think about the tragic loss of life which has taken place off this island.

Even the world's first ironclad, USS Monitor, the victor of the famous Battle of Hampton Roads during the American Civil War, was lost in this area during a storm in 1863.

The area needed a guiding light, and Bodie Island Lighthouse is that light, even to this day.

The lighthouse seen here was built in 1872, after two previous efforts which didn't last long; the first in 1847 wasn't built properly and was abandoned, the second was blown up by the Confederates in 1861 to keep it out of Union hands. But this one lasted and stands 156 feet (48 m) tall and still shines out to give light to those who are in darkness, in what can often be dangerous waters.

The lighthouse is one of only a dozen tall, brick tower lighthouses remaining intact in the United States, and one of the few with an original first-order Fresnel lens to cast its light. It was automated in 1932 and transferred to the National Park Service as part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore in 1953. You can climb the 214 steps that spiral to the top for a wonderful view of the area.

This was one of my most memorable photographic experiences. It was so wonderful to walk out on that boardwalk onto a covered pier and shoot this joyously beautiful sunset with the iconic lighthouse glowing from the fading rays. The pier sits in the middle of a lake with surrounding marshlands, and has tables to stay and enjoy it all. And I did stay long after sunset, watching the light fade into the twilight of a lovely October evening. Manual settings, tripod, Lee ND and CPL filters, Capture One Pro post-processing.

Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 ascends the approach to the MacArthur Bridge in East St. Louis, Illinois. In railfanning the St. Louis area since 1990, I can honestly say that this a sight I never could have dreamed of seeing.

My wife asked me if I would go to the grocery store this morning because she didn't sleep well last night and I said "yes". So as I began to motivate myself out the door I couldn't help but become motivated by the flowers her daughter brought her. So I figured how could she be mad at me if I took a little longer to get there since I was taking this for her. ;-)

Now in all seriousness... Still life shots like this have always been the bane of my photography. So every chance I get I like to try to practice to improve.

We got in our rental car and started driving towards other towns dotting the Amalfi coast, when I looked in my rearview mirror on the twisty curvy roads and decide to throw caution to the wind, parked the car and got out the camera and tripod.
