I had a fantastic evening on Tuesday 18th October 2022 watching actor/writer Paterson Joseph in conversation with Desiree Reynolds for the Off Shelf Festival about his brilliant new book “The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho”. Paterson Joseph will be a familiar face from TV having appeared in various dramas including Noughts & Crosses, Vigil, Doctor Who, Inside No.9, The End of the F***ing World, and Peep Show; and films including In the Name of the Father, The Other Man, and The Beach.
Charles Ignatius Sancho was a real person, born and orphaned in 1729 on a slave ship going to England. After some pretty awful experiences he rose to own property, get married, and become the first Black person to vote in Britain. It’s a fascinating story. There are letters by him to his family and a few historical accounts. Paterson first came across him in 1999 and has been fascinated ever since. He wrote a one-man play about him and has now has skilfully written his life story as a very engaging novel, but based on as much fact as was possible to find.
As well as talking in conversation with Désirée Reynolds at Sheffield University’s Drama Studio Paterson gave really amazing readings from his book. He’s performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company as well as taken this story on the road as a one-man play, so you can imagine how alive and passionate his readings were! I could have listened to him all day, the audiobook will be an essential purchase!
It was really great to meet Paterson after his talk too and he signed my book for me while we chatted about Charles Ignatius Sancho, but also how close Paterson came to being cast as Doctor Who back in 2009! He auditioned for the role while filming The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency in Botswana, but it went to Matt Smith in the end. I said I hoped he’d still get to be the Doctor one day and he said he’d be up for it if they ever wanted to go in an older direction. I pointed out that there’s no age limit with the Doctor (unlike say James Bond) so there’s hope for him yet!

Writer journalist poet biographer
At the time of this passport application, Sandburg had been appointed correspondent for the Newspaper Enterprise Association, covering the countries of Great Britain, France , Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Russia. His base was to be Stockholm.
"Carl Sandburg was virtually unknown to the literary world when, in 1914, a group of his poems appeared in the nationally circulated Poetry magazine. Two years later his book Chicago Poems was published, and the thirty-eight-year-old author found himself on the brink of a career that would bring him international acclaim.
Carl Sandburg worked from the time he was a young boy. He quit school following his graduation from eighth grade in 1891 and spent a decade working a variety of jobs. He delivered milk, harvested ice, laid bricks, threshed wheat in Kansas, and shined shoes in Galesburg's Union Hotel before traveling as a hobo in 1897.
Sandburg's experiences working and traveling greatly influenced his writing and political views. He saw first-hand the sharp contrast between rich and poor, a dichotomy that instilled in him a distrust of capitalism." from carl-sandburg.com/
betondorp, amsterdam, 1921-1928, architects: diverse
At the beginning of the 1920s, when the shortage of dwelling units in Amsterdam rose to 20,000, the Municipality in the person of Housing Agency director A. Keppler organized a competition for prefabricated housing types, to be built in the rural area of Watergraafsmeer. The ten eventual winners made use of eight different systems all based on the use of concrete, hence the estate's more usual name: Betondorp (Concrete Village). These systems used either standardized formwork, prefabricated wall elements or concrete block. 900 units were built between 1923 and 1928. The urban design masterplan and the buildings around the central square or Brink are the work of the architect Dick Greiner. These buildings consist of a few larger houses, shops, a library and a 'village hall'. A second project of note is the housing on Schoovenstraat and Graanstraat designed by J.B. van Loghem. In contrast to the more decorative architecture of the other architects, Van Loghem did not hesitate to express the blocks' functional basis in their taut facades. The abstract designs originally above the entrances have since disappeared. The rows of striking taller blocks where the access roads meet the estate, along Onderlangs, are by Willem Greve. In 1979 the Municipality elected to restore the Betondorp. The decision to use rendered external thermal insulation has left most of the exterior in its original state. The tile pictures in Van Loghem's houses have been replaced by new ones designed by Harmen Abma. The buildings around the Brink have been renovated by Onno Greiner (son of their original architect) and Martien van Goor. The Betondorp also attained a certain celebrity because of its inhabitants, mainly Communists and Socialists who would not allow a public house in their 'village'. More than one scientist and writer spent their youth here and maybe even played football with another of its famous sons, Johan Cruijff.
