Statue of Houvaness Toumanian (1869-1923). Famous Armenian Poet. Toumanian devoted himself to humanitarian causes — organizing societies to help war victims, orphans, refugees, seeking support for an Armenian statehood and helping those fleeing the genocide of 1915.
Tony Beccera, one of the original Freedom Writers of literary and cinematic fame, stopped by Amos Hiatt Middle School to speak with the students about the importance of their education on May 13th. On the same day students were outside planting vegetables in the Hiatt garden after the school received a $500 Youth Garden Grant Award sponsored by The Home Depot and presented by The National Gardening Association. Some of the students involved with the garden are also involved with the Breaking Bounds project at Hiatt, which aims to support students who face problems and obstacles that may potentially lead to dropping out of school.
Inside the classroom, Tony Beccerra spoke to Hiatt students about overcoming obstacles and the value of writing. The Freedom Writers Diary is a collective journal written by a group of troubled students from Long Beach, California in 1999 about all the obstacles they faced just to complete high school. It was ultimately published and later adapted into a major motion picture in 2007.

I spent part of an afternoon catching up on novel writing. I was in such a mode I felt like I had to capture it. Ironically, for this pose I wasn't actually writing. I merely restaged the pose, and went back to working on some of my novel.
The Stevenson Summer Writers Workshop invited rising 8-12 graders to spend two weeks exploring creative writing through small group writing workshops with top faculty. Workshops included instruction in contemporary literature, craft, genre, and publishing.

Altaf Shaikh is a famous Professor Emeritus, Visiting Professor, Scholar, a travelogue writer and a well known Marine Engineer.
Born in 1944, Altaf Shaikh got his early education from Hala, then from Cadet College Petaro. He studied Marine Engineering at Marine Academy Chittagong, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh ) and did post graduation from the World Maritime University , Malmo , Sweden .
After sailing as Chief Engineer on various types of ships for some 15 years, he served Malaysian and then Pakistan Marine Academy as Head of Marine Engineering Dept. for some 20 years. He is author of more than 75 books mostly travelogues in Sindhi and in Urdu. He is also a regular columnist of daily newspapers of Pakistan, Malaysia & Japan.
Besides other awards, he is recipient of Presidential award T.I (Tumgha e Imtiaz) of Pakistan and PJK (Pingat Jasa Kebaktian) a Malaysian Award.

Librarian and author Diane Mayr spoke about writing at the awards ceremony, which was held Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Currier Museum in Manchester, NH.
The Cornish Colony was comprised of an extraordinary group of visual artists, writers,
architects, landscape designers, musicians, art patrons and public figures who lived and
worked in Cornish and Plainfield, NH from 1885 until 1935. The group included such notable
people as Maxfield Parrish, Stephen Parrish, Ethel Barrymore, Percy Mackaye, Ellen
Shipman, Paul Manship, Thomas and Maria Dewing, Charles Adams Platt, novelist Winston
Churchill, and many others. Cornish, NH even served as the location for President Woodrow
Wilson’s summer White House for three years.
The adjacent Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site was established by Congress in 1964, after
the Memorial’s donation of the land, historic structures and collection of Saint-Gaudens’ art
to the federal government. The purpose of the SGNHS is to preserve, interpret, and exhibit
historically significant resources associated with the life and cultural achievements of August
Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907), one of America’s foremost sculptors. The 148-acres site consists
of his historic home, gardens, grounds, and studios, with over 100 examples of his original
artwork on display and over 10,000 objects within its museum collections.

He was in prison for years after killing three policemen in the 1970's Athens. Inside the prison, he met the writer Elias Petropoulos.
