"Carl Sandburg was virtually unknown to the literary world when, in 1914, a group of his poems appeared in the nationally circulated Poetry magazine. Two years later his book Chicago Poems was published, and the thirty-eight-year-old author found himself on the brink of a career that would bring him international acclaim.
Carl Sandburg worked from the time he was a young boy. He quit school following his graduation from eighth grade in 1891 and spent a decade working a variety of jobs. He delivered milk, harvested ice, laid bricks, threshed wheat in Kansas, and shined shoes in Galesburg's Union Hotel before traveling as a hobo in 1897.
Sandburg's experiences working and traveling greatly influenced his writing and political views. He saw first-hand the sharp contrast between rich and poor, a dichotomy that instilled in him a distrust of capitalism." from carl-sandburg.com/
William Faulkner (1897-1962), who came from an old southern family, grew up in Oxford, Mississippi. He joined the Canadian, and later the British, Royal Air Force during the First World War, studied for a while at the University of Mississippi, and temporarily worked for a New York bookstore and a New Orleans newspaper. Except for some trips to Europe and Asia, and a few brief stays in Hollywood as a scriptwriter, he worked on his novels and short stories on a farm in Oxford.

Gemini Ink, San Antonio’s literary arts center, held its 3rd annual Writers Conference July 20-22nd, 2018 at the historic downtown El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel. The conference focus was “Writing the New Century” and explored the role writing plays in shaping the personal, social, and political consciousness of our 21st century.
Featured award-winning authors included Dr. Norma Cantú, Martín Espada, Anel Flores, Veronica Golos, Debra Monroe, and Pulitzer Prize winner Vijay Seshadri.
The 3-day conference was comprised of a full schedule of workshops, readings, panel presentations and a small press book fair, with free evening events and after-parties.

The Perkins Building was designed by Luther Perkins and was built in 1890. It was home to the Condon National Bank from 1890-1916. The building became famous on October 5, 1892 when the Dalton Gang tried to rob it and the First National Bank. Noone had robbed two banks at the sametime. After a 15 minute gunfight with local citizens, 4 of the 5 members of the gang laid dead along with 4 citizens Emmett Dalton, the lone gangmember to survive was sentenced to life in prison in Lansing, Kansas. After 1916 the building became home to a feed store, an opera house, and the Dallton Museum. In 1972, the city of Coffeyville purchased the building and work on the exterior was completed in 1992. Interior restoration was completed in 1997.

The Stevenson Summer Writers Workshop invited rising 8-12 graders to spend two weeks exploring creative writing through small group writing workshops with top faculty. Workshops included instruction in contemporary literature, craft, genre, and publishing.
