Undated Washington, DC demonstration by Iranian students protesting the Shah that took place in late 1973 or early 1974 and ended with a picket line near the Iranian Embassy at 3003-05 Massachusetts Avenue NW. A small delegation went to the Austrian Chancery located at 2343 Massachusetts Ave NW and delivered an appeal for those arrested and tortured by the Shah’s secret police called SAVAK. Masks were used by demonstrators to conceal their identity from SAVAK.
The protestor’s sign that read “Defend the Twelve Iranian Artists,” in image 11 refers to the arrest of twelve writers, poets and filmakers October 1, 1973 for allegedly plotting to assassinate or kidnap the Shah and his family at a Tehran film festival scheduled for November of that year. Seven of the accused received minimal jail sentences, three were given life imprisonment and two were executed after a trial broadcast live on Iranian television in 1974.

The idea of raising a memorial to honour the memory of local dialect writers had been raised in the press on a number of occasions but the suggestions were not taken up until 1896. It was then that the subject was taken up in a more formal way. The scheme for a memorial found support. Extracts from the subscription book show that apart from a small number of £5 donations, the majority were small under £1. The Rochdale architect, Edward Sykes was commissioned to produce the memorial. He presented his design to the memorial committee in July 1899. The memorial was made by MESSRS RAWSON, monumental masons of Bury. The memorial was placed in a central position on The Slopes, a recently landscaped area of Broadfield Park, overlooking the Esplanade and opposite the town’s library. It was unveiled in 1900 by Archdeacon Wilson.
