Smile on Saturday
In 1886, the writer Guy de Maupassant published his eyewitness account of Monet at Étretat. "The artist walked along the beach, followed by children carrying five or six canvases representing the same subject at different times of the day and with different effects. He took them up and put them aside by turns according to changes in the sky and shadows." Monet painted the dramatically arched projection in the cliff at Étretat six times from this angle: twice during each of three visits to the Normandy coast in 1883, 1885, and 1886. He refined the pictures in his studio.

My apologies to the writers of "Good Golly Miss Molly," for ever so slightly tinkering with the lyrics, in the name of good old Flickr fun. I simply changed the word "ball" for "Tulip." I, personally, found it best to scroll down each picture in time with the song. Much like I enjoy shooting vintage cameras, I love writing with fountain pens. For years I have enjoyed crafting my own in my workshop. This is a closeup macro photo of the nib on my newest creation that I call “Night Writer” which is made of Ebony and Black Titanium.

In today’s world of social media platforms, people are searching for their 15 minutes of fame. Celebrities seem to be the new gods. They are lauded and applauded. They are made larger than life and are given the gloss of perfection.
I chose to create a pop art photo of a singer song writer who could have achieved his 15 minutes of fame. I thought that by using vibrant colours and the same image, on vibrantly coloured backgrounds and applying different blendes, I could create a shot suggestive of the exaltation given to celebrities.

This was shot with the help of a big tripod, a manfrotto Magic-Arm and a really shacky ladder. Lit by a Profoto D1 in a beautydish, I used f1.4 and 1/250, ISO 64 to keep a little bit of the ambient light. Otherwise the spotlight-effect would be too strong...

Sultan is one of my close friends, and one of the people I work with, and I might say I really enjoy his company. Originally, he's an English language teacher, and has been for about 6 years or so. His ambition though doesn't stop at teaching, he gives english courses for beginners in his free time. He's also a successful playwright whose works have been featured in many local and international theatrical occasions with a wide range of themes and topics.
He recently joined our crew as a script and scenario writer, and I've enjoyed his pleasing company and experience often times.
On a more personal level, Sultan is happily married and has two adorable boys (the elder is Malik) who share with him his passion for work and life. He also has a relatively good experience when it comes to musical instruments and melodies; a great fan of "Fairouz"!
What's interesting is that I don't remember looking at him without finding a smile on his face; he never meet anyone without smiling!
And here I truly can say: "That's the spirit !"
