Traveling to Yosemite valley during the winter is a must see in a lifetime event, and I hadn't done it yet. I was watching the weather forecasts, and saw that a storm was coming in for the Christmas break, as luck would have it, I had decided to stay local in San Francisco this year, and the obvious choice of where to spend the holiday was based on the storm. The only question I had was how heavy it would be... I was expecting at least a foot based on forecasts, and as I was driving late into the night, I was a bit worried. Needless to say when I got to the pass on 120 there was a good amount of snow, but thankfully the snow plows had been running all day, and it was packed pretty well. The real danger isn't snow, it's ice, so this was pretty straight forward driving.
Coming into the valley into a snow storm at night by yourself can be somewhat unnerving, even for an experienced outdoorsman like myself. That being said I made a mistake not just shooting straight up to Tunnel view. Unbelievably, the storm cleared in the matter of an hour or two during the night. When I went up at 5 am it was nearly clear skies for astro, and I realized quickly that the tunnel floods the valley with an orange light, so night shots from Tunnel View are nearly impossible. I may post these shots regardless, as in a way, they are kind of cool and serene, even with the light pollution. But the real gem this weekend was during Christmas day and inspired by a post I saw by @rayophotography13 - I mean who doesn't know the famous sentinel bridge but something about that spot with a snow covering is just magical. So I took a wide view late in the day during the golden hour, and came out with what you see here.

Part of my favorite area of Seattle....Georgetown! I sneaked up on these will-o-wisp(depiction of ghostly light sometimes seen at night or twilight over bogs, swamps, and marshes. It resembles a flickering lamp and is sometimes said to recede if approached. Much folklore surrounds the phenomenon.) just after dawn and before they disappeared back into hiding. Look, even the bokeh are dancing because it is Friday......HFF! Have a fantastic day and a wonderful weekend!

The Berlin Falls cascade from the center of a sheer cliff that stands roughly 80m tall. The shape of the falls is likened to a giant candle. A narrow, natural channel at the top of the falls creates the ‘wick’ of the candle, and as the water drops from this point, it fans out creating the rest of the candle before emptying out into the pool below.

Lovely light tonight down at the Ballycopeland Windmill, enjoyed in the company of Mark Thompson and Andy and his mate from Belfast. The craic as always was great :)
We were all fascinated by how many cows there were in the field opposite? :)
The upper reaches of Mount Gould, Grinnell Point and Mount Wilbur alight with alpenglow and reflect in the still waters near the rocky shore of Swiftcurrent Lake, Many Glacier, Glacier National Park, Montana.
This is the same scene as an earlier post from my visit last fall to Many Glacier, but taken some minutes earlier. When recently going back through my old photos from this favorite place, I started liking this earlier version more and more so I thought I would share. I really like the bright orange-red alpenglow just having reached the highest parts of the mountains while cool colors dominate the rest of the scene, and to me the little wisp of dawn fog arcing up in front of Grinnell Point in the center of the frame adds a nice subtle touch.
Thanks for visiting!
“There may be a great fire in our soul, yet no one ever comes to warm himself at it, and the passers-by see only a wisp of smoke.” ~ Vincent van Gogh
Going through the archives again today; sorting & backing up to external hard drives. And since we are only 34 short days away from our next trip out west, I thought it would be fun to post a few that I never got around to posting the first go round.
Sunrise on top of Dunraven Pass in Yellowstone National Park during the fall of 2010...and here you see some of the remnants of the Antelope Creek fire, leaving a trail of smoke throughout the valley below. Funny how something so destructive can be so beautiful & intriguing :-)
Enjoy the rest of your day....many thanks for all your visits, comments, & suggestions!!!!

While walking the Balconies Cave Loop with a view looking to the east to the eroded rock formations and volcanic leftovers present in this part of Pinnacles National Park. My thought on composing this image was to pull back on the focal length to include as much of the ridge with the rock formations as I could in the lower portion of the image. The blue skies and that wisp of clouds would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image.

The former owners of our property had a horse. While hiking today, I found these strands of mane hanging in a tree that the horse used to rub himself against. The sun was illuminating them as they swayed gently in the breeze.
My in-laws are Methodist ministers who have their manse in Barry (currently) so it's a great jumping off point to the Brecon Beacons.
Sunday morning predicted fog, but the closer I got to the Beacons, the more is dissipated, leaving only wisps of mist.
This was shot with the X-T2 + 1,4x convertor across the other side of the lake which lit up when the sun hit.
A feather I found, just liked the colors.

On New Years Day, it was sunny and there were a few clouds in the sky, so I thought there might be a chance that I could finally photograph the sun setting. I grabbed my camera and tripod and drove up Cypress Mountain, and could see the sun was quickly going down. When I got to the lookout, the parking lot was full and there was a line up down the side of the road. Everyone had the same idea! I waited awhile and finally made it almost to the exit of the lot, thinking I would have to turn around and go back home, when a car left, right in the prime spot, and I edged in. Once I got out of the car, I realized that the ground was a skating rink - I only had to go about five steps to the rock wall, so used my tripod as a walking pole, then leaned against the wall, put up my tripod and took a few shots. There were trees in the way, but I couldn't move the tripod or I would have slipped. People were falling like dominoes on the ice. I decided to leave to give someone else a chance to get the last of the colour, and found I couldn't take a step without sliding. Luckily, a young man took my hand and helped me off the ice. When I got home, I had to crop the image a lot to get rid of the trees in front. It's not one of the best sunset photos I've seen, but I do like the wispy line of clouds along the mountain range.
