Built between 1906 and 1909, this hydroelectric dam on the Wisconsin River at Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin was the largest hydroelectric station west of Niagara Falls at the time of its completion. The dam has a power generating capacity of 10 megawatts, and stands 55 feet tall and 350 feet long with spillways and gates over the top, which separates the Dells of the Wisconsin River into a lower section and an upper section, and flooded several caves and rock formations in the upper dells. The Renaissance Revival-style powerhouse features large arched windows, side gable red tile roof with end gable parapets, and slightly extruded pilasters with recessed panels at the corners and framing the central bay of the building. The dam was named for the surrounding city of Kilbourn, Wisconsin, which was named for Byron Kilbourn, president of the La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad Company, later the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road), which founded the town, but changed its name to Wisconsin Dells in 1931 in order to better reflect its status as a popular tourist destination.

The sun sets over Lake Wausau near Memorial Park in Wausau, Wisconsin...
Sunbeams are gently fading, slowly fading,
And birds are waiting to do their mating,
When eventide is nigh, moonbeams are descending,
The day is ending, a happy ending,
The sun is sinking below the western sky.

The bald eagle’s fishing techniques rely on the combination of its powerful talons and incredible eyesight. They hunt a wide variety of prey, including fish, waterfowl, small mammals, and carrion. They will perch on high branches or cliffs overlooking rivers or lakes and wait for an opportunity to strike. They then swoop down and dive into the water feet first to grab their meal when they spot prey.
The rocky sandstone shores of the Wisconsin River are always impressive. They are protected by the DNR.

The water was considerably low along the Wisconsin River. This usually allows anything on the bottom to stick out above the water.

Wisconsin & Southern's "Reedsburg Rocket" blasts through Merrimac, Wisconsin and over the Wisconsin River at a whopping 10 mph. The weather was crappy, it was moist, but good times were had. To the left of the tree is Matt Bro, and the lights of the Merrimac Ferry

The third scenic highlight L863 encounters on it's way back to Madison is the Wisconsin River Bridge at Merrimac. At one time, this was a deep valley, and the bridge you see here soared over the Wisconsin River. However, a dam was built near Prairie Du Sac flooded the valley and made this artificial lake called Lake Wisconsin. Thus, the bridge piers that were once above water were now submerged. This has caused quite the headaches for B&B and MOW crews on the CNW and WSOR alike.
