High rock, chimney rock and Blackhawk's profile can all be seen along the Wisconsin River. Wisconsin Dells, WI

Recently I went to a favorite spot in my neighborhood in Wausau, Wisconsin to view the sunset over Lake Wausau and the Wisconsin River. There were some clouds just above the horizon that blocked the sun, but not the light. It is interesting to see the differences just before the sun goes down and just after sunset from the same location. The lights in the distance are from the Granite Peak ski area.

I do love the way the sky and colors change so quickly at sunrise and sunset. These two images were taken only 3-1/2 minutes apart this past Sunday evening. This was the second photo.

Bald Eagle at Petenwell Dam

January 30, 2015

This almost looks like the eagle is going for the geese... but in reality, the geese are yelling at the eagle for making such a close flyby with his little shad.

Shoot The Night

I wish I could time travel before all of the night light pollution just to see how crazy the skies used to be. Especially from a perfect vantage point like this. I had no wind, nice crisp spring air, milky way, the reflection of the milky way in the water and some beautiful night skies. Exactly where I want to be! ;)

March 29, 2013, long time coming, it finally feels like spring.

The extreme cold temperature (0°F) causes mist to rise from the Wisconsin River as this bald eagle expertly navigates it to find his fish.

I wish the thumbnail didn't lose so much color information. Definitely better viewed large, it loses all those silly compression artifacts.

I was watching about 50-75 American bald eagles fish over the Wisconsin River this past week. It was frigid cold, my fingers were frozen and the eagles were quite far away. Regardless, there was something so powerful and breathtaking. Something so elegant and graceful. Something unconfined and magical. Nature is amazing and gives you wonder if you look.

Mostly small shad was caught by the eagles that morning and transferred successfully from their talons to their beak while flying. With one gulp the fish had been swallowed. I witnessed a juvenile bald eagle catching something bigger that kept on pulling him deeper into the cold water. After a long struggle, the eagle had no choice but let go.

The sunset of 10/31/08 casts the colors of Halloween down on Rib Mountain and Lake Wausau near Wausau, Wisconsin. Various waterfowl rest on the water while on a break from their long trip south.

Autumn has arrived in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Photos taken along the Wisconsin River near Tomahawk

The Wisconsin River, with its sandstone shorelines, is a major tourist and recreational destination during the summer months. A boat tour of the Upper Dells is a great experience, and shows the true beauty of the area.

The name Wisconsin is from an Algonquian term 'Meskousing,' meaning 'dark, rushing waters.' And Dells comes from the french 'les dalles,' meaning flat, layered rock. Wisconsin was first visited by French explorers Jean Nicolet, Jacques Marquette, and Louis Jolliet in the 17th century.

From the archives: I'm going back over the last year and choosing images from each month that I didn't think were Flickr worthy at the time and redoing them. I don't know why I never got around to posting this shot of Lake Wausau as seen from Memorial Park on the southeast side of Wausau, Wisconsin.

Wisconsin & Southern train L867 crosses the former C&NW bridge across Lake Wisconsin at Merrimac, Wisconsin on October 14, 2021.

I found this color on Highway 51 on my way to Wausau in central Wisconsin. The water is a bulge out of the Wisconsin River. The farther north I went the more intense the color got. The funny thing was some maples(the red ones) have turned completely while some haven't even started yet.

Union Pacific 2238 leads the LTA41 across the Wisconsin River/Castle Rock lake bridge at Dellwood, Wisconsin on its way to Winona

High winds are whipping up whitecaps on Lake Wisconsin as Wisconsin & Southern's L469 crew leads an eastbound across the venerable bridge at Merrimac, Wisconsin on April 17, 2024. The current operating plan usually has this Baraboo turn crossing here in darkness, but a construction issue the day before on the bridge rehabilitation project resulted in a delay that allowed this now rare daylight opportunity.
