WinXP kører i VirtualBox under Ubuntu 8.04. Og jeg multitasker for hårdt!
Målet er at kunne lave monitor profiles fra den virtuelle maskine så jeg ikke skal boote til windows for det.
The NB100's keyboard is very small, and is difficult to use accurately straight away. The touchpad is a decent size, though, and miraculously the buttons are in the right place on this netbook. The 8.9" screen is relatively bright and there is a webcam.

This is what my home/office desktop looks like at the moment. A nod in the direction to the generic, pre-loaded XP desktop but this one comes from www.istockphoto.com

We think my wife is about to become the first Tri-Cities (WA) real estate agent to use a Mac. Here's what she got today to replace her dying PC laptop.
More details here: Real Estate on a Macbook?
the recent SP3 for WinXP refused to install correctly...and, on closer inspection, the culprit was a borked registry. lesson learned: don't run "registry cleaners" that remove "unnecessary registry keys" willy-nilly...
so, a fresh install of XP. not so painful this time around, as i've been religiously backing up my documents and settings to my external drive...so after the reinstall, it took no time to get back up and running. also, it gives me a chance to triage all the apps i install, and really whittle it down to the bare bones essentials.
one stumbling block of the whole upgrade: my motherboard needs its own SATA drivers...helpfully provided on floppy, but i've since chucked my FSDs out. so, the XP installer didn't see any harddrives at first, which was a bit of a bummer...but gave me the opportunity to finally look into building a slipstreamed XP install CD - with the SATA, LCD screen, mobo chipset, etc drivers - with nLite. very nice not having to disk-jockey on first install just because vanilla XP doesn't know my mobo's USB controller and such...
I had plenty of time to mess around while my computer booted. 11 minutes. That's a typical boot up time for my laptop when at the office.
I blame two entities: Windows XP Pro and my damn hell corporate IT.
I used to justify slow boots on having a shock-resistant/slow hard disk. But when I replaced the operating system on my ancient laptop from Windows 2000 to Ubuntu, the change was enormous. That slow old machine boots up in less than 45 seconds, including the time to log in!
Windows XP Pro is bloatware, pure and simple.
My corporate IT is non-responsive and full of self-importance. The local guy here in my office is wonderful, but in the 2 years I have worked at this company, I have received one—ONE—reply to my requests for IT help from the office tasked with providing it. The local guy doesn't even work for my company, but for a sister OpCo.
So, many mornings I unplug the laptop from the net and boot as if I am roaming. That speeds the boot to about five minutes. A huge savings in time, but still nowhere near the 45 seconds for my old laptop, and similar for the desktop I also installed Ubuntu on.
Seriously, except for not having some programs, it is a pleasure to shut this OS off and go home to an actually nimble computer. No matter that the processors run half the speed, they act twice as fast.

This kind of creeped me out... it's kind of like seeing yourself walking into the office or something.
This is the Nautilus projects page. Each project should have a small description underneath the heading. As of 11 August 2010, aren't appearing on Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP.
Oh, and not even the undo works. Yay, Windows! I see an "OK" button. Where's the "Defenestrate" button?
Tried Apple's Boot Camp yesterday. In under an hour I could dual boot Windows XP and Mac OS X natively on my Mac mini! Spooky.

Verrückter Bildschirmschoner. Gleiches Bild wie bei einer defekten Überwachungskamera. Ganz ohne Neo, Morpheus und Trinity aber trotzdem witzig.
I came into work Saturday to finish one of my projects. I tried to log on to my computer and got this message. computer account was not found. huh? hmmm. this version of XP wouldn't even let me onto my local drive. went to another computer and was able to get on locally but couldn't access the network. I should have stopped at that point. there are ways around obstacles and I tried one. couldn't get access to my file.
But...I went to yet another computer, logged on, and wa-la.... there's the server.
what the hey??? the next obstacle was that the program I needed to use wasn't installed on this computer. should I have stopped here? maybe. so I copied the file onto a cd and went back to the 2nd computer, copied the file onto it and launched my program....
The girl who belongs to this computer just finished switching to a newer system and hadn't installed the program yet. Stop here? ah, no. I installed the entire thing, launched it and......geez, 2006 version ! ? totally foreign environment. well, gotta do what I gotta do. customized it so that I could find my way around. slow......very slow.
Finally one of the guys also working on Saturday came in and said I could use his computer. he's leaving and he uses the 2002 version. YAY! he's also hooked up to a plotter. very significant since my plotter is on the network and unavailable.
I stayed, got it done and called my client, who said..."oh, I can pick it up Monday."

la idea es deshacerme del dualboot en mi laptop, matar la instalacion de xp y dejar solo lo necesario para el trabajo que me obliga a tener un xp instalado
The computer is geek's life pivot point, and the desktop is the one of the computer. It is a junk drawer, a starting point, a personal refuge, the flagship of customization, the home of the creation, deletion and restauration.

Firstly. Oh Hai Grain. Lo Siento.
I've been absent this week because our PC decided to die on Monday. In short, we got hit with a virus and the damn thing wouldn't even turn on. So we had to get a new hard drive and run the computer from there. We got it back today and I had to figure out how to get things back in new places, which was frustrating to say the least. We still have the old hard drive since we didn't want to lose all pictures, music, etc. I found out how to get our iTunes' full again by accident really, and then got all excited when I opened iTunes and found all my songs back there. Synchronising my iPod was fun, and took about 3 hours..
So this week I've entertained myself by running (did my best 2 miles !), watching Glee (How funny and immense was "Like a Virgin"?) and the Leaders' Debate (I knew who I was voting for before, and he belongs to one of the parties represented by a primary colour), working (I've lived to work another week and the taxman owes me £100+) and reading books. I read "Dressed To Kill" by Charlotte Madison in two days. I recommend it to everyone because it's absolutely brilliant. I've now moved on to "Long Walk To Freedom" by Nelson Mandela which I anticipate will take me until my 27th Birthday to read.. Oh I also watched (read: fell asleep before the end of) (500) Days of Summer which is like Ellie Goulding's "Lights" in the fact it gets better with age. Last thing, Tropicana Strawberry and Banana Smoothies are really nice :]
I'm looking forward to having nothing to do until work on Tuesday, a short week, then The Temper Trap on Sunday and Alex's Birthday on Monday. Have a good weekend Everyone !
