Whenever I'm at the park I visit the flamingoes. Usually I don't take any photos of them but last weekend I thought it was time for a new flamingo portrait. The flamingoes seemed to agree and posed nicely for a photo. :)
Whenever I come to this garden, I bring some bird food for robin. It seems he is starting to recognize me ...
Thank you all for visits, faves and comments!
Whenever I hear that phrase, "mind the gap" I am reminded of years of living in London and when I used to travel for 4 hours a day from Tulse Hill to Swiss Cottage each day for work. Now I live here, well not here but...
Whenever I visit the Lower Rio Grande Valley, one of the birds I really look forward to experiencing is the Great Kiskadee. Today while out birding a friend said that the Great Kiskadee was just a Social Flycatcher with a Texas accent and another friend replied that a better description would be an Antisocial Flycatcher. I definitely got a chuckle from that but I can see where he was coming from with his comment. These birds are loud and they do use their large size to dominate whatever area they are in. Not everyone loves their colors and markings as much as I do but you have to admit this is a pretty striking bird. I think this is the one bird that made the biggest impression on me the first time I visited south Texas.

Jasper drapes himself over his Ottoman Empire and waits. And waits. And waits. He can tell when an ad comes on TV and he perks up, hopeful that we'll get up off our butts and play during the ads. Out of frame on this shot is one of his favorite toys, Betty Bunny, on the floor below Jasper's face. She's ready to be part of this game once it begins

Whenever I photograph this girl, I think "sad heiress." Something about her just says that she's rich/royal, but feels unloved or lonely. That mood seems to always permeate how I style her.

Whenever we cross into the U.S. at the Peace Arch crossing I see this unusual art installation and since its not a place you can stop to take pictures, unless of course you like to live dangerously :) the only way to photograph it is from the car as you cruise through, mopping your brow, sighing in relief that you weren't strip searched or had your Nexus card revoked for smuggling in an errant orange :)

Whenever I take these crazy annual trips I usually have about three goals of 'must have' shots. Last years trip focused on street running, and this year I had three rather obscure and diverse operations on my list. I am pretty happy to have been completely successful with two of them and the third is no longer possible do to a schedule change.
Anyway here is a different take on 'Trains Where Trains Shouldn't Be' this time in caves instead of on streets! Ever since learning of this local I just knew I had to see it. In Springfield, Missouri in the heart of Frisco country a few miles east of town, BNSF drops below the surface of the earth in this most unusual operation.
In a former limestone mine the caverns have been transformed into 3.2 million square feet of leasable warehouse space with a constant ambient temperature of 62 degrees 100 ft below the surface. Amazingly these caves contain three miles of roads and three miles of rail sidings. BNSF local Y-SPM220 comes out 5 days a week and after switching the above ground yard curls down the steep loop past the runaway track and into the caves.
Here is one favorite as BNSF 3181 (rebuilt EMD GP50 blt. Mar. 1981 as ATSF 3828) and 2797 (rebuilt EMD GP39-2 blt. Mar. 1975 as ATSF 3643) shove a dozen cars, a mix of hoppers and reefers, into the cavern. This fascinating place began operation in 1960 when the first underground warehouse opened served by the Frisco. It has vastly expanded since then and if you want to learn more here are three links that are interesting resources with some great photos and video.

Of all the images this may be my favorite as an employee in a helmet seemingly matching the units pops a wheelie on his bike heading down the road beside the train.

Whenever you doubt your self-worth, remember the lotus flower.
Even though it plunges to life from beneath the mud,
It does not allow the dirt that surrounds it
to affect its growth or beauty.
Be that lotus flower always.

Whenever I think of El Capitan, Yosemite National Park is what comes to mind. However, Texas also has an El Capitan, located in Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Salt Flat, Texas. I got this shot early one morning on my way to the trailhead of the Guadalupe Peak Trail. This is the 10th-highest peak in Texas, at 8,085 ft.

Whenever you sleep, I hold your life,
In my driven cross, mine for all time.
Close your eyes to see the unreal,
Relax your body, be part of this dream.
Drift the world to my fantasy,
The worlds collide, the dream becomes real.
What happens to the flood of hallucination?
Walk alone their path in twilight?
I can offer you, some nightmares to consume.
If life is boring I can give you pleasure.
Remember, I'm here. Shout it's in vain.
Discover to me, join to the end of the real game.
In my eyes you'll see the unreal,
Close your eyes and see the unreal,
Fall to sleep and see the unreal!

Whenever I spend the night at Point Reyes National Seashore, I make a point of rising at day break for an early morning trek at Pierce Ranch.
The early morning air here is salty, moist, and fresh. The old abandoned ranch is eerily alive, with the wind whistling through the cracks in the steeples, while the old clapboard structures groan and creak like they've seen one too many winters. At this time of the morning I usually have the place to myself which adds to the affect. I like it this way.
Check it out if you have a chance.
Happy Fence Friday everyone.

Whenever I go to Porth Cwyfan I always spend a little while looking at some of the rocks on the beach. There are the most extraordinary mix of colours and shapes within the rock unlike anything else I have seen. I have no idea what this is, but even on a windy and very wet, gloomy morning, not very well photographed....it's something special: not just a piece of rock. This photo i probably less than three feet wide. Can anyone tell me more about it?
Whenever I go to Northumberland I have to visit Bamburgh Castle which sits proudly near a most beautiful, long, sandy beach. The most magnificent of castles, it has stood here on the north east coast of England since 1164. The first written mention of a fort at this site was in 547. It was destroyed by the vikings in 993. Of course I have photographed this castle many times and I love it.
whenever am bored , i go to my bed with magazines and chocolates then i take some photos .. if you got bored of that kind of photos i don't care cuz i enjoy it lol ;p !

Whenever we go down to London for a short break I always try and get a few early morning shots before breakfast. Not that 7am is particularly early, but for a major city I always find it surprising how few people are up and about over the weekend. Unlike New York, which is truly the city that doesn’t sleep... but that’s another story!
I was aiming to experiment with long exposures but the sky wasn’t playing ball, but you have to try these things. It could have been an interesting shot had the six brightly, and I mean brightly, attired runners crossing the bridge registered in the shot but even the slowest runner was too quick to even leave a ghost impression.
In camera the image didn’t look too bad but back home on the computer it was a little disappointing. I’ve processed it to reflect the conditions at the time of shooting (dull and flat) by de-saturating what little colour there was with the exception of the glass walkway panels.
The last 13 years whenever I go out for photography my dog Lucky (who is my best mate) is always with me. He is always there waiting for me to take the shot... Lately Lucky has not been at his best with his health so I also stopped going out as much as I used to... A couple of days ago I saw the weather being cloudy and thought that it could be a good opportunity for some landscape photography. The problem was that the place I had decided to go would not be ideal for Lucky as there was a lot of uphill walk. So I decided to leave him at home. He was not very happy about it but I didn't want to put him through this ordeal and I finally convinced him to stay at home... To tell you the truth I was not happy either... I went and took my photos and went back home as quickly as possible. As I expected, as soon as I got in the house he told me off but after a big cuddle (and a cookie) I was forgiven... This photograph is the result of that day out and of course it is.... Dedicated to my boy Lucky!
Whenever there is a damp grey day up here, (which has been far too regular an occurrence this summer), I think of waterfalls and this place is like a magnet. It is always gorgeous to behold, its a pleasant drive and so easy to access, so I find myself here with the camera.
It was totally deserted when I arrived and I had a good 40 minutes here before it really started to rain heavily and I left and headed back west, where it looked brighter and drier. I ended up on the heather moors above the Lancashire Plain looking at the Jubilee Tower on Darwen Moor before heading home.
I took this shot from higher up to capture more of the upper falls and the gentle curve of the waterfalls. I also did some nice shots down in the gorge which I may post. The real problem was the breeze causing the spray to swirl and the foliage to move on this day. This place will be good in a months time when the autumn colours in the leaves are on full show.
Whenever I am fortunate to be at sea, I love to be on deck for the sunrise. Every one. There is always something magical when the glowing light ignites the sky, the sea and any islands in the way.
In the moment of this photograph, we were just passing the Bora Main Motu Reef heading toward the only channel that leads into the spectacular inner lagoon of Bora Bora. Mount Otemanu at the centre of the island is obscured by clouds.
The inner lagoon is an unbelievable paradise of a thousand hues of blues and greens where the snorkeling and diving is out of this world.
For this morning, I was happy the clouds from the earlier rain hung around long enough for the photograph but glad that they would move on for the days ahead.
Two hours later I was in the water...
Whenever I wander along the side of the river at Looe in south-east Cornwall I occasionally pause to look at this memorial to Nelson the seal, who was a local character and a great favourite. Sadly, I never knew him in life, but the words on the accompanying plaque tell his story.
NELSON (Obit 2003)
A distinctive "one-eyed" scarred bull Grey Seal who was a familiar sight in the harbours of south Cornwall for over 25 years. Eventually he settled on the rocks of Looe Island as his home and made Looe harbour his dining room where he was fed and his company enjoyed by local fishermen, townsfolk and countless visitors.
A Grand Old Man of the Sea, and a great favourite with all.
In life, Nelson was a splendid ambassador for his species, now, in bronze, he serves as a potent symbol of the rich marine environment of the area and a permanent reminder of the need for it to be cherished.

I have to admit whenever I saw a group of cows I had the same thought as to when I saw a group of people, that they are just a group. I never stopped to think that within that group are individuals .
Now I have been living with a herd of cows I now think differently and within that herd there are feelings, a social structure and emotional bonds.
Like any group there are personalities that stand out and ones I connect with.
I am really torn with building a relationship with the cows who seek my attention or the ones I am instantly drawn to because i know that unless i buy them off the farm owner these cows are going to be sold and moved on but I can't help but want to get to know them more.
They aren't food, they aren't objects to be bought and sold, they are living, breathing beautiful creatures with thoughts and feelings.
These two girls came out of different herds and arrived at different times but it has been interesting to see a bond formed between them.
The smaller girl, the Brahman type is a very small cow and straight away she caught my attention because of her caring nature, her soulful eyes and her quiet manner.
Now the big girl has for whatever reason taken it upon herself to be her best friend.
It is so lovely to see this interaction between these two.

She calls out to the man on the street
"Sir, can you help me?
It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep
Is there somewhere you can tell me?"
He walks on, doesn't look back
He pretends he can't hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there
Oh, think twice, 'cause it's another day for you and me in paradise
Oh, think twice, 'cause it's another day for you
You and me in paradise
Think about it
She calls out to the man on the street
He can see she's been crying
She's got blisters on the soles of her feet
She can't walk but she's trying
Oh, think twice, 'cause it's another day for you and me in paradise
Oh, think twice, it's just another day for you
You and me in paradise

Whenever we take a walk in the woods Della is always good about checking in with either my husband or myself.
Whenever anybody denies climate change, I just want to SCREAM. Here we are for the 3rd winter in a row with the magnolias ready to bloom in January! They're not supposed to flower until the end of March or beginning of April at the earliest! But we had a few warm days in January and look at the size of those potential blooms. Problem is the temperature dropped the next day and I'm guessing most of the buds froze. It makes me want to cry. Nature is getting so messed up.
Whenever I come out to this location, I hope to catch a train on that bridge, but haven't yet. Some day :-)

Whenever we visit the arboretum, we always hope to see the Great Egret at some point. This time, it was hunting across the way from us, the entire time we were there. Occasionally moving from spot to spot, for a change of hunting grounds.
Most of the time the Egret was hunting in the marshy area, the Canada Geese were not too far off. Maybe they were hoping the Egret would stir up some food for them, too.
One "new" point of interest this time was a handful of birds zooming back and forth just above the surface of the lake, seemingly hawking for insects. We couldn't tell if they were actually catching anything because they were so fast.
I tried get some shots of them, but everything was a blur. However, one did swoop by as I took this shot of the Egret. From what I can tell, this might be a Chimney Swift, per its actions and shape of the wings. If so, then this is a new bird for my Life List!
Whenever we have visited Tintagel we have parked our car on the cliff-top next to the church and then walked along the coast path to "The Island" and what remains of Tintagel Castle (not much!). That way we avoided the crowds and the busy car park in the village centre. You can walk up to the village from the castle if you want to visit the Old Post Office - a lovely old medieval house that is owned by the National Trust - but otherwise there is not much there to attract us.
If King Arthur ever existed it was probably around the fifth century after the Roman occupation had ended, but the castle whose scant remains we can see wasn't built until the 13th century. We do however know that there was a high status settlement here that traded with Mediterranean countries in the late Roman period. So who knows?
Whenever we go for a walk in the Breamish valley, we regard it a "must" to visit the Ingram cafe afterwards to sample their wonderful tiffin or other such goodies.
You must do the same if you're ever there 😄

Whenever I have nothing, a walk around the pond generally gives up something...there always seems to be a vision worth stealing. Been a little distracted as of late...retirement looming...wasting time on Instagram...living life small.

Whenever I go up into the mountains, these birds suddenly appear seemingly out of nowhere. Always curious, they are a delight to photograph.
According to CornellLab, they use their spike-like bills to pick seeds out of pine cones. They eat some and bury thousands of others for the winter.
Photographed on the Grand Mesa, Western Slope, Colorado.
Whenever we visit Paris I have always enjoyed walking from the Louvre through the Tuileries Gardens and emerging into the vast public space Place de la Concorde. It is one of the most impressive squares in Europe with its impressive classical buildings, its Luxor obelisk flanked by two monumental fountains.
This shot does not try to capture the space but one of the details you can see. This is one of eight large ornamental lampposts that were placed in the square in the late nineteenth century . They have a maritime theme in the Rostral style. Two gilded ship’s prows carrying a street lamp project from the surface of the green fluted columns. The gilded composite capitals are decorated with four mascarons. The top of the columns looks a bit like a lighthouse with a round pointed top. These beautiful columns add to the maritime flair of the square. They always remind me a little of giant cactus . The Eiffel tower is in the background, its a trick of foreshortening as its a mile and half from Place de la Concorde.
