This old hand-cranked, wooden washing machine was in a museum in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Black parts are metal and white parts are wood.
My guess is that the kids were assigned to keep the crank going. "If you don't clean up your room, you will be the one to crank the washer on Monday!"

The quality on my camera phone is horrible, but it leads to effects I find interesting. The useful thing about it though is I have it on hand when I find random washing machines on the street.
Expired 35mm film, first put through the washing machine, then dried ( in a dark room) with hairdryer before shooting.The results are a bit more subtle than the roll I put through the dishwasher.

The washing drum was wobbling and sometimes not lined up with the filler spigot - causing water to spill on the floor.
Fearing some major broken mounting bolt or something, I opened it up to find one of the springs had pulled through the rusted frame.
I drilled a new hole in good steel and reattached the spring.
