Wanting a photo

Squirrel struck a he-man pose

How could I say no

I’ve been wanting to shoot this place for quite sometime. I finally got the chance on this trip. After having lunch with the family in Central, I ventured off on my own, got off the MTR at Quarry Bay, and it was a short five minute walk. Anticipation mounted as the Yick Fat, came into view, not unlike a hunter coming up on his prey. I walked around the back, up the steps, and entered the courtyard. I was surprised to see businesses like eateries, salons, and health clinics occupy the courtyard level. This was where Mark Walberg was being chased and tumbled down the side of the building in one of the Transformer films. As I hunkered down with my Nikon and tripod, I was not surprise to find other photo enthusiasts milling around, shooting, posing, strutting, jumping, with their smartphone, all for their IG account no doubt. As I sat on the floor, waited for nightfall and made some test shots, people came and went. 2 dark haired, attractive young women in particular were doing the same. I could tell they were not local. They struck up a conversation with a third, who was setting up a drone. I thought how cool that would be to get drone shots of this place. As I continue to do test shots, Claudia came over, curious as to what I was doing, with a mounted camera so close to the ground. She sat down next to me, and I showed her some of the test shots. As we chatted it up about her work with Emirates Airlines, traveling, and photography, the drone lifted off the ground. I envied at her life, to travel and see the world. As the conversation continued, we heard something crashing into the side of the building above us, the sound of the drone buzzing was interrupted, then bits and pieces of plastics came crashing down, landing just mere feet from where we were. Claudia joked that good thing we weren’t hurt, her face is her moneymaker and it was not insured. Shortly we were joined by her colleague Sabrina, and Marysha, a young Russian architect by day, and failed drone pilot in her spare time. Before my companions departed, they apologized for taking up so much of my time. I was glad they were there, because by the time they left, it was the perfect time to take the shot. Claudia, Sabrina, and Marisha, I thank you.

Seen at the Sunday Markets in Upper Hutt. Sometimes you just want to be somewhere else.

A few weeks ago Sookie went missing from mid day on Monday to Friday morning I was beside myself with worry walking the streets calling her name, posting flyers asking people to check sheds and garages and putting up posters.

Since she has been back she has been a very different Cat not wanting to go out at all and seems very frightened.

I probably will never know what happened to her I can only presume she was locked in somewhere but I am now spoiling her something rotten and giving her lot's of cuddles.

Hiatus is back with another Halloween concert on October 19 at The Grove in Anaheim. If you are in SoCal it would be worth seeing.

I have been wanting to go photograph this species on breeding grounds for quite a few years and this was my second attempt. My first attempt a few springs ago was foiled by rainy and windy weather which could not be avoided as it was an in route stop elsewhere. For this adventure I drove back up to Indiana to an area of grasslands at a reclaimed coal mine site. I made sure the weather forecast was going to be calm and without rain. It was amazing hearing multiple individuals singing their insect like song. It was fun getting eyes on several. This one was in an area that was well suited for photography and I observed and photographed him moving from perch to perch singing. The summer sun/light quickly got harsh and my few short hours in habitat came too soon to an end. If I go again it would be nice to pick a calm cloud covered day.

My only previous experience with this species has been with over wintering birds in Florida. The fall plumage has a nicely scalloped look on the dorsal aspect of the birds quite distinct from what I observed on breeding grounds.

Wanting to escape the heat and humidity, what better place than being high up on the coast...🤔 What I didn't expect was being bombarded by hornets!!!! Not one or two, but too many to count....😬😬😬 Not wanting to lose the last of the glorious light I very quickly set up and fired off several shots. Well, I say quickly, I wasn't the only one under attack as they also took a liking to my camera and lens... Still, I got the shot and made a frantic escape back to my car...

Thanks for viewing and have a great weekend :-) 😊👍

I think that many of us dream of going back to a simpler time. Wanting to escape the predicament that we find ourselves in globally in 2025. But this is not a time to keep sleeping and dreaming, it is a time to wake up…

How will you take care of yourself today? Be mindful, and protect yourself from people and places that take away your strength and energy. Being kind doesn’t mean putting up with things that are hurting you. We can’t help or be of service if we are drowning in negativity.

What will you do to bring peace to the Earth today? It’s about making simple choices again and again. Each day is truly a new beginning. Each moment. Each breath.

Kinetic Photograph made with one single long exposure shot, printed straight out of camera.

If you’d like to read more details about how the shot is made see below. And for more of my kinetic photographs here’s my set, "Drawing with Light"

Kinetic: Relating to, caused by, or producing motion.

These are called “Kinetic” photographs because there is motion, energy, and movement involved, specifically my and the camera’s movements.

I choose a light source and/or subject, set my camera for a long exposure (typically around 4 seconds), focus on my subject and push the shutter button. When the shutter opens I move the camera around with my hands...large, sweeping, dramatic movements. And then I will literally throw the camera several feet up into the air, most times imparting a spinning or whirling motion to it as I hurl it upward. I may throw the camera several times and also utilize hand-held motion several times in one photo. None of these are Photoshopped, layered, or a composite photo...what you see occurs in one shot, one take.

Aren’t I afraid that I will drop and break my camera? For regular followers of my photostream and this series you will know that I have already done so. This little camera has been dropped many times, and broken once when dropped on concrete outside. It still functions...not so well for regular photographs, but superbly for more kinetic work.

Santa Caterina has a peculiar tradition of making scarecrows and placing them on the roofs of the houses, the scarecrows are called spaventapasseri, they are made of straw, old clothes, hats and they are supposed to ward off evil spirits bringing good luck to the inhabitant. The town also has a mysterious fountain that is said to have healing properties, the fountain is called Fontana della Salute (meaning “Fountain of Health”), it is located near the Porta dell’Acqua gate and according to legend, the fountain was built by a Byzantine emperor who was cured of a disease by drinking its water. I wished we would have spent a little more time in this interesting town but that is par for the course on most places I visit but better to leave wanting more and we were also wanting to have a proper lunch as this town was shut down for Monday leaving us with Crik Crok and beer or hightailing it to Badolato.

I took this on Sept 18th 2023 with my D850 and Nikon 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 at 44mm, 1/250s, f11 ISO 250 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia ,Topaz, and DXO

wanting to be part of the flower arrangement :))

Several pieces of ice scattered out on the lake ice made for some fun winter subjects. Likely thrown out by kids or someone wanting to watch them shatter.

Photos from a short walk at the park, sorry for so many. Temps have warmed for now so much of the ice is disappearing.

I've been wanting to photograph big waves for some time now, and it was in Easter Island where I finally had the chance. There are certainly much larger ones out there, but these are big by my previous standards.

I don't have the best feel for the height on this one, as it was taken from a good ways off with the 300mm. A few days later there were some truly gigantic waves, but alas, too far away to photograph.

Thanks for looking!

Not wanting to go out to mingle in the massive weekend crowds endangering each other in this Covid-19 pandemic - it's called an 'intelligent lockdown'! -, I again pottered about in Our Garden (see yesterday's photo).

Late yesterday I'd noticed a lone Firebug, Pyrrhocoris apterus, straggling about on our garden path, and this morning again. But in the afternoon, death had apparently come. I watched Garden Ants, Lasius niger, chewing Firebug apart and industriously taking its various parts to their underground nest. What, I thought, would happen to the chitin exoskeleton?

Soon I saw that that, too, was chewed into transportable sections (see inset) and shlepped home.

My question: chitin is virtually indigestible to insects and I suppose also to ants. In fact, you need the enzyme chitinase to dissolve that exoskeleton. But that chitinase is a very dangerous thing because it can also dissolve Ants' own exoskelton. So what goes on? how is that exoskeleton used in the bowels of the ants' nest? do perhaps digestible molds grow on it? Anyone out there in Flickrland with an answer? Thanks!

Been wanting to play around with more night photography for a while now. For the best odds there is 1 night a month when the moon is dark and doesn't dilute the stars. From there you are rolling the dice on weather, hoping for clear skies with no clouds in the way. Add to that, you need to track the movement of the Milky Way(thanks to a phone app) as it travels across the night sky to line up with wherever you want it in the frame.

I had one night last month where i figured the Milky Way would cross into the frame over the dock at about 4 am, right where I wanted it. I just hoped the clouds would stay away... I lucked out and it made getting up at 330 am totally worth it. Single exposure, 30 seconds

The stillness of life in a raging sea. The seagull sat still as if wanting a portrait of itself.

Someone made unusual modifications to this abandoned, or ghost, ship.

A piece of curved, reinforced sheet metal has been permanently attached to the front of the vessel's pilot house. This is not normal as it would completely block the crew's view and make it impossible to steer the vessel safely from within the pilot house. Photos elsewhere taken from the other side of the boat show that the barrier does not extend as far around the starboard (right) side of the pilot house.

Also, metal bars that run from just below the roof of the pilot house to the top of the railing seem to prop up the port (left) side of the pilot house. This is not a normal feature of modern naval architectural architecture. Among other things, the row of metal bars would get in the way of people wanting to walk along the port side of the boat.

I can describe the modifications but I'm at a loss to explain them.

I've been wanting to get a photo of the other 2 minifigures that came with Poe's X-Wing fighter. I spotted them rushing off to somewhere, so I took this quick photo :-)

I took this with my kids whining about being tired and wanting to go home so I'm not too happy with the result...

We had a lot of fun going out to Reflection Canyon this week - especially with a couple of my good buddies. I finally got the perfect conditions I've been wanting: The sun in the perfect spot near the winter solstice, a clear horizon for the sunburst, and the rest of the sky filled with clouds. I couldn't have asked for a better morning. Hope you all enjoy! And just so you have it, here's a link to order my 2018 Photo Calendar. They are going fast and supply is limited!

Approaching the location of the former Robbins station that was removed in 1991, the recognizable double ditch lights of a BCRail unit bring the Okanagan switcher North bound thru the Ducks Meadows tunnel. Shooting one of these BCR units thru a tunnel is something I have been wanting to do for a while. You know you've got an iconic railroad when you can tell what's coming just based off the lights.

I been wanting to process this pic for the longest time but my processing skill was just not up to task before and I wasn't happy with my results back then. This spot from the Upper Antelope Canyon has been shot a few times by many photogs and it looks like one of the butte from Monument Valley. I decided to add in a Hawaii flavor and make it seems like a sunset scene in Hawaii with the island, mountains, crashing waves, moody cloud/sky, and a backlit Sun. What do you guys think, does it look like a sunset scene found in Hawaii??

wanting to go to Paris since i was 4 years old, one Parisienne asked me why it took so long...did i swim?

I've been wanting this shot for so long, there was just one day when the snow was down at ground level in the Glen when I was up, so I just had to go get it. What a view to wake up to each morning.

Strong winds always make wonderful patterns in the saturated sand as the tide ebbs. Everything is pushed across the beach and constantly in motion. A photograph of it looks so tranquil, but these features show it is a wild day. The wanting comes in waves is by the Decemberists, and these small waves of sand are formed and driven across the beach.
