Long exposure of Portland Bill Lighthouse at the tip of the Isle of Portland on the Dorset coast. I wanted to capture the 4 separate beams that rotate every 20 seconds which helps to identify the lighthouse to mariners. So I had to trade that off against a longer exposure which would have given more detail in the night sky....

I have not formally studied Architecture and have not successfully identified this type with internet searches. Will someone share their knowledge about this style?

I thought it was beautiful and had to walk in the middle of the intersection for a few minutes to get the angle I wanted. I did my best to not impede the traffic flow in downtown Kansas City too much. Luckily it was a quiet weekday afternoon and I was successful in getting the shot I wanted.

A cold and rainy April morning in Maine but perfect for small little slices of life in picturesque Perkins Cove

The pumping engine house of Hind's Shaft, Wheal Uny, at Trewirgie Downs on the edge of Redruth, Cornwall. This engine house was built around 1870 and was in use until the mine closed in 1893. It is grade II listed.

This photo has been taken on beautiful but a bit cold morning at end of August. At the beginning the mist was so dense that the barn was almost invisible. Gradually the sun cleared partly the air and created a mystical atmosphere.

2022 kickoff! Just spent a week in Sydney, exploring the city and it's awesome coastline, including the beautiful ocean pools like this one at Bronte Beach.

I have a tendency to go slightly overboard with some things. Write too much, play music too loudly, and more importantly, chase for too long. I had been planning to only shoot A408 down until Effingham, but when my friend suggested traveling further south, it was hard to say no - especially given how starved for photo opportunities I've been lately (thanks work & weather alike).

So, the farthest south on the IC I've ever gone, I found myself at the Alma grain elevator and bringing my camera down to the railhead while class leader IC1000, plus its younger partner IC1026, come barreling down the main at 47mph with just 156 axles on their train total. Funny how despite where I go, some things just don't change... like how I always stay too long during and after chasing something down. You know, the usual.

I think it was worth it, though.

Not in this window reflection but while walking down the stairs to the beach. Many times I’ve watched the horizon as the sun drops away, always hoping to see it but only imagining it. This was for sure! I wonder if video would catch it?

Reflection of buildings in Canary Wharf, London

One thing my friends and I agreed on was that we simply had to take night exposures of the signals on the Roanoke District. Such imposing sights as these CPLs are, it was a must-do. The difficulty, of course, was finding one suitable for it, and getting lucky with traffic.

As night fell, we ventured north to see a few we had skipped in the day and went between two: Lithia and Ellis Run. Lithia was pretty neat, but there being houses all around plus some not too happy dogs made us try the north end of the siding, Ellis Run, which treated us much better.

We got lucky, too - NS 12Z was taking off north out of Roanoke once we started taking some photos of the massive N&W signal. It became a waiting game.

Of course, there was little light left by the time we arrived at Ellis Run, so setting up the shot was going to become a bit of a task, not to mention just getting photos of the signal itself. Then I remembered I keep an absurdly bright flashlight in my camera bag, so some careful placement of that on the side of the road - where it dips down for drainage - gave us perfect illumination on the signal heads, and the opportunity to focus and prep our shots for the train.

Wouldn't it be cool if having green, yellow, and red, was all one frame? Truth is, it's multiple - this shot takes a few frames from the night and has them stacked together. NS 12Z came barreling past eventually, dropping the signal from green to red, and with a shot from a few minutes prior giving us yellow, all three colours were now in our hands. This was very much the shot I was looking forward to the most on our first day, and now I could say it was done!

If it hadn't been nearly midnight already, I would've opted to set up to try star trails, but all of us were plenty exhausted and we had an early day the next morning, so we called it and returned to Roanoke for the night.
