Candid street photography from Glasgow, Scotland.

Previously unpublished shot from September 2019.

On a positive note I have just received my 2nd Pfizer vaccine dose so should be well protected in a couple of weeks time. More street photography beckons and maybe we can eventually get back to more normality, the kind that saw 2019 being a bumper street photography year for me. Wishing you all the best - stay safe!

The Konik Horses live free in the area of the

Christianskoog/Woehrdener Loch near the North Sea Coast in a natural reserve area. We have been so lucky last year to find the whole herd not far away from a small street and could come very close to them to take some wonderful photos of these beauties. This litte foal is well protected in the middle of the group, but was also extremely curious about us.. :-D

Just a quick snap of what's to come in the next day or two.

Scenario:

After the Invasion in Normandy, German forces were in a near-constant state of withdrawal through French and Belgian territory. By September 1944, American troops began pushing German forces across the German border.

Allied forces weren't necessarily prepared to deal with the defenses that Germany had built up on the border, however. The Todt Organization had erected an intricate series of bunkers and other fortifications along the Western German border. In total, the campaigns to breach the Siegfried Line resulted in well over 100,000 casualties.

About this Diorama:

October 1944

This diorama depicts one of the more heavily guarded sectors of the Siegfried Line, in the region of Aachen. A well-protected Pak 43 and a camouflaged Pak 44 watch over on of the few roads crossing through the Dragon's Teeth in the area. Meanwhile, elements of the 10th SS Panzer Division withdraw through the line's defenses.

The Vallée des Fantômes

The phantoms inhabit the valley at an altitude of 800 metres near the clear peaks. The trees are so well protected from winds that blowing snow from nearby summits causes up to three metres of snow accumulation, decking out the evergreens with a layer of soft snow that eventually camouflages them completely. These are the phantoms. It is guaranteed that you will experience a total change of scenery! After a good snowfall, the atmosphere is muted, the ground seems to be carpeted in cotton batten and the silence is omnipresent.

Stopping point for many birds heading south and well protected with strict walking areas.

196. Clancy, 3yrs 32wks

Greetings dogs and dog lovers everywhere! Clancy here, and I'm proud to tell you that our SMP is now a year old. Here's how it all happened:

In May 2013 Dad became a Flickr member to download some of the mounting volume of photos he was accumulating during our walks around our wonderful city of Ottawa.

This is his Flickr site:

www.flickr.com/photos/124849370@N04/

I was a year and a half old at that time, and he soon realized that the occassional photo of me he uploaded usually got more attention than his other photos (Dad says not to rub this in, and I won't). So in Jan 2014, when I was 2yrs 8wks, he opened another Flickr site just for me.

He started my photostream with the very first picture he took of me the day Mom and Dad brought me home from a farm in south eastern Ontario, when I was 9wks old.

Here it is, marked as 1.Clancy-Pants, 65 days:

www.flickr.com/photos/130722340@N04/15672363404/in/datepo...

Then he continued posting every few days in chronological

order my rise from puppyhood until reaching my actual age,

in June 2015, which was by then 2yrs 32wks. That was when

our SMP was born, where we started uploading 'real time'

photos, usually from that morning's walk, though sometimes

from a day or two earlier depending on circumstances and

photo quality.

Here is our very first SMP from June 27 2015:

www.flickr.com/photos/130722340@N04/19205681995/in/datepo...

Our routine since has stayed pretty much the same, with

Saturdays for my chronological updates (SMP); Tuesdays for

older throwback photos; and the odd holiday or vacation upload days to add to the chronology just for fun.

And so here we are one year later on this very early A.M. Saturday, posting a sort of tribute to our first SMP. As you can see, I've got Dad pretty well trained now as my spare ball carrier. He's wearing his anti-fly gear because though the mosquitoes are no worse than usual, the deer fly population is running rampant. With my longish fur, I'm fairly well protected, though my snout gets the occassional bite. Really, considering the cloud of flies that at times swirls above my head on our walks through the denser bush, not many actually settle down looking for a meal, and those that do are often disposed of by Dad, who seems more bothered by their landing on me than I am.

Thank you everyone for your kind words, for sharing your great photos, and making this all so much fun. Dad wants you to know that even though my Flickr site is for me and dog-related photos only, he still looks at all the photos you upload through the 'People' selection off the 'You' menu, and has much praise for the abundance of quality among them.

Here's to another great year!

High up in the tree crib this "American Bald Eagle" is keeping her babies well protected until dad comes home with the groceries ,.. almost feeding time !!

If you've read my story about the previous picture, you'll understand that I have to post this photo too. 😄

I have been observing the nest of these two swans for about 6 weeks.

Two chicks hatched last Saturday or Sunday.

This week I went to the nest again to see what happens

but the nest was empty. I walked very far along the river and couldn't find any trace of them.

Yesterday I tried again and found the lovely family.

I had to go to a private property, in the garden ... thought what should happen, in the worst case I would be chased from the yard.

Nobody will shoot me….

Nobody has either….

I do a lot for a good photo…. 😄

I hope you enjoy it!

-------------

Ich hoffe es gefällt euch!

Green hazard?

From the comfort of his cozy nest and well protected behind his safety glasses, Joe the Hedgehog turned into his "mad scientist" alter ego for the time of this week's "Macro Mondays" challenge, having fun conducting hazardous experiments with green LASER beams.

But fear not, because all's well that ends well. Nobody got blinded and Joe resumed his more peaceful activities: smiling to the world and enjoying the warm spring days in his garden.

This nest was quite visible but well protected in a quiet spot. I spent a long time waiting for the other Gt Crested Grebe to return to take over keeping the eggs warm. After 2 hours the partner came back and it was interesting to see the change over. There are 3 eggs and I will be back hopefully to see the chicks when they hatch. I will be posting a photo of the exchange another day.

……Strong winds again today - 40mph gusts so finding something stationary was a good place to start! Some very nice lush green growth about the garden, the Climbing Hydrangea up the garage wall was well protected from the wind so when the sun shone between the showers I grabbed my #097 shot of the day. Taken on my phone in Apple RAW and edited in Lightroom. Press Z or pinch out to take a closer look. Alan:-)

Living in the UK you very rarely get chance to see a walrus in our waters, so when one appeared in Scarborough Harbour, just up the road from home, I had to go and take a look. Thankfully he was being well protected from too much attention by Marine Conservation and Diving groups.

This is a male known as Thor, who has been seen in other parts of the UK. He has recently been seen around the Netherlands.

It looks like he fancied the New Year in Yorkshire.

End of April, it was still a lot of snow on Traunstein. So, we were recommended to choose the Naturfreundesteig route for descent. It's one of the most beautiful routes in Salzkammergut. This is how it goes, well protected, through a natural window. On the opposite lake shore Traunkirchen is seen.

The Trollstigen platform and two viewpoints are designed by Reiulf Ramstad Architects. From the top, well protected against the elements by steel and glass, you can see all the way down the mountainside. The structure is designed so that it blends in with the surroundings. Some parts are carved into the rock, whilst other parts are built on stone walls.

The paths and steps to the viewing points invite the traveller to stroll around. The largest viewing platform juts out over a ledge to hover 200 metres above the Trollstigen road that snakes up the steep mountainside. The platform has various viewing points suitable for both the bold and the cautious visitor.

This American Robin (Turdus migratorius) built her nest on a horizontal log on our covered deck, well protected from the elements. She laid her eggs in mid-June and began sitting on the nest on June 14. The babies hatched exactly two weeks later. We tried to stay off the deck as much as possible and I was able to watch this little miracle unfold through a hallway window without causing any disturbance. A few times, when mom was away from the nest, I climbed a ladder to have a peek inside. Only one of the four eggs didn't hatch and mom had her work cut out for her, feeding the brood.

This photo was taken on the last day the chicks were in the nest. I placed our 8-foot ladder about ten feet away and used my 150-600mm lens to capture a series of feeding time portraits. Mom had just fed this hungry youngster a rather large grasshopper but it was quite insistent that it wanted more. After a few seconds perched on the edge of the nest, looking around, mom took one more look down her chick's throat and seemed to be thinking, "Didn't I just put something in there??"

The next day the babies fledged successfully.

Taken near Cranbrook, East Kootenay, British Columbia, Canada.

Said the elephants to each other and for that matter that is what I said to my guide. The huge flood plain that was close to the lodge where I stayed was just beginning to fill up with wildlife coming to enjoy the water. The area is huge so each group can have access to the precious water.

Chobe National Park in Botswana is home to the biggest population of wildlife in Africa. Elephant herds are abundant and well protected by the government of Botswana.

MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK COLORADO

Spruce Tree House has been closed to visitors since 2015. A continuous crack in the natural sandstone arch above the structure has become unstable with numerous rock falls. The pueblo was built around 1250AD and contains about 130 rooms and 8 kivas. The site is well protected in the alcove from the elements and has over 90% of its original material.

It's that kinda day, very wet and windy.

Not sure I would venture out for an early morning walk in the park.

Well these two are well protected ... Hang on to these umbrellas, and enjoy your walk.

Near Tijarafe is the so-called Pirate Bay (Porís de Candelaria). This well-protected bay is hidden beneath a gigantic rock overhang. Around 20 small white stone houses have been either carved into the rock or somehow built between it.

Day 22 submission for October 2017: a month in 31 pictures.

Leaves caught in the current swirl around before they make their way down stream to the right of this picture. This little waterfall is set in small gorge that has small caves in the cliffs. Local legend has it that the Indian Chief Metacomet (aka King Philip) met here in 1675 with other chieftains to plan attacks on local European settlers in towns such as Deerfield, MA. It is easy to picture them here as the location is well protected and quite secluded.

Cliff swallows building their nests with mud and what looks like snake skin. They work in large numbers and never slow down. It was surprising I was able to capture this one .. after many attempts. Mother's work is never done. Happy Mother's Day.

Cliff Swallows build their mud nests on cliff faces and other vertical surfaces in colonies containing hundreds, even thousands of other birds. They also build nests in the eaves of buildings. The pair works together, gathering pellets of wet mud in their beaks and laying them down one by one in rows until the structure almost reaches the overhang above. Swallows deposit mud pellets onto the nest with a shaking motion leaving behind well-formed nuggets that bond with the others and harden into a strong nest wall. Technically called an adherent cup, a finished nest contains over 1,000 mud pellets. Cliff Swallows tuck their nests away in corners and make sure that the nest opening is small so the eggs and nestlings are well protected from predators like hawks, owls, snakes, and mammals.

Polruan is a small fishing village in the parish of Lanteglos-by-Fowey in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is bounded on three sides by water: to the north by Pont Creek, to the west by the River Fowey and to the south by the English Channel and neighbours village Bodinnick to the north, connected by a 4 mile walk along the hill tops. Polruan is very steep and well protected from the prevailing winds and Polruan Pool is a haven for small boats.

I always get a laugh that our garbage is so well protected by a chain link fence with barbed wire at the top. We wouldn’t want anyone to remove any trash and lessen the load that the county trucks have to haul. I was at the dump on Memorial Day and every dumpster was full. The dump man came out of his teeny, tiny shed and pointed to an overflowing dumpster over my head. I told him I couldn’t fling my trash bags up that high. I think I mentioned something about not knowing this county had requirements of being able to play basketball to live here. The dump man told me to pull my car over and he would show me how to get it in. He heaved a big bag over his head and flung it right into the dumpster. I flung my bag and it hit the side of the dumpster. We had to scramble to get out of the way of its trajectory on the way down. I guess he could see I was a hopeless cause because he kindly tossed the rest of the bags up and in. What was my point ... oh, yeah, I asked why everything was so full. He was complaining that the county insists on keeping the dumps open 24/7, but the trucks that pick up the big dumpsters don’t work on Sunday’s or holidays. This causes quite a backlog of trash. Thus, my point that having a fence to keep people from removing trash seems silly. HFF

Picture in comment 6.

It is not always possible to capture the detail of the rich dark chocolate brown scales symmetrically arranged in precise rows on the underside of the Mourning Cloak's wings unless one uses fill flash (which I don't for ethical reasons) or gets lucky with the butterfly posing in bright sunlight turned ever so slightly so that the sun illuminates the closed wings.

I got very, very low to get the shot of the underside of this very incredibly pristine individual. Butterflies usually emerge from their winter hibernation with numerous scars and faded wings, but this individual survived the harsh winter unscathed sheltering in some well-protected spot. Notice that his pale-yellow fringe is perfectly intact.

My other shot shows the top of the wings view of the species.

ENGLISH: In the sailing ship era, Brekkestø was a port for ships that had to wait for good sailing winds or sought shelter for inclement weather. In a description of the Norwegian coast from the 1790s, the port of Brekkestø on the south side of Justøya is mentioned. It is really a double port, and there are two races leading into them. In the eastern course you reach the inner harbor, where small frigates can enter. The inner harbor is 3 to 4 feet deep, the ships are pig-bottomed and the harbor is well protected from weather and waves. At the outer harbor there is a deep, sandy bottom 13-17 feet. Large frigates will fit in this port. Good moorings to land are important in southeast winds.

Brekkestø has a well-preserved building environment with wooden architecture from the sailboat era, including the protected Tollboden.

Store fregatter får plass i denne havna. Gode fortøyninger til land er viktige i sydøstlig vind.

Brekkestø har et godt bevart bygningsmiljø med trearkitektur fra seilskutetiden, blant annet Tollboden som er fredet.

Benvinguts, merħba, a Malta.

===================================

Welcome, merħba, to Malta. From here on I will be sharing images of our trip to the center of the Mediterranean this very hot July 2025.

View of Valletta, the capital of Malta, from Sliema, with Marsamxett Harbor in the middle. This is one of the two harbors that surround Valletta, the other being the Grand Harbor or il-Port-il-Kebir. Marsamxett has never had the same importance as its eastern "twin" harbor, I don't know why, but I guess it's not as deep or well protected from the winds.

In any case, this is where we took the Sliema-La Valletta ferry. On the left of the image you can see both the bell tower of the Anglican cathedral (St. Katidral ta ’Pawlu) and the immense dome of the church of Mount Carmel (Madonna tal-Karmnu).
