After I had captured Matariki ( flic.kr/p/2nvCHUV ) I decided to hang around for a while, enjoying a beautiful still morning at Waikuku overlooking the Ashley Estuary. I was rewarded with the presence of the majestic white heron.
The white heron or kotuku is well-loved by the New Zealand people, but it is rarely seen except by those who specifically seek it out. Its sole New Zealand breeding site near Okarito Lagoon in Westland is well-known and well-protected, but elsewhere it is 'He kotuku rerenga tahi' or the bird of single flight, implying something seen perhaps once in a lifetime. When seen in close proximity it is a magnificent bird, with its large size and clean white plumage.
A large white heron with a long pointed yellow bill, a gape that extends well behind the eye, long dark legs, and a very long neck. In flight, it retracts its head so that the length of its neck is hidden, giving it a hunched appearance.
…Being well protected from any rough sea by the harbour wall this marina is a safe haven - it would need to be looking at the value of this little collection!! No comings or goings whilst we were there but it was mid October so all summer sailors I guess in these parts. Alan:-)…..

The good harbor conditions are largely natural and the warm and easily accessible harbor conditions In the area combined with proximity to the Skagerrak, the harbor, first at Flekkerøy, made it important already more than 500 years ago further into the fjord.
The harbor is very well protected from wind and normally has tidal differences of +/- 10 cm.
The first fortifications were built in the 16th century and the naval station for the Danish / Norwegian galley fleet at Lagmannsholmen In the western harbor from the 1680s until 1750. In 1804 a quarantine station was established for shipping in Denmark, Norway and Holstein in the harbor. It was operated until 1814. From 1827, Kristiansand was the last port of call for the Christiania mail route with the DS "Constitution" along the coast via Fredriksvern. In 1872 a ferry connection was established between Kristiansand and Fredrikshavn with DS "Frithjof".
From 1897 the defense had a war station and a marina in Marvika. This facility has in recent years been used as a base for deep-water testing of submarines by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW).
A drizzly start of the day for this "Eastern Coyote" but well protected from the elements with that gorgeous winter coat !!
While the Northern White Rhino subspecies is effectively extinct now, the Southern subspecies is doing much better. They are currently considered "Near-Threatened" by the IUCN. This Rhino lives in a conservancy in Kenya and is well protected. The only thing that will completely ensure their future though, would be for the poaching of their horns to end.

A couple of young cow moose on a frosty morning in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. In this shot, we can see evidence of how well protected moose are against the cold. If any heat were escaping from their bodies, the frost on their backs would melt. Instead, the cows each have a layer of frost, a clear indication of the excellent insulation value in their coats. .
Most common milkweed seeds disperse in the late fall but these stayed in the pod all winter. They were well protected as they are in pristine condition while the outside of the seedpod is weathered and worn.
Somehow it seems your secret’ s well protected
And the ghost under your bed so far away
Promises you won’t keep and friends rejected
Another stepping stone you’re using on your way
Now brother for the fun you had
The Devil´s coming and his mood is bad
So so say your prayers your soul to save
His tiptap shoes they will dance on your grave
Just to keep the future from the unexpected
You flip another coin down in the wishing well
another night you spend with puppets disconnected
If nothing else at least you have your soul to sell
Hey brother keep senses clear
A crash is closer than it appear
Fame is a drug, better use it well
You look for heaven but end up in hell
Let me tell you about a man I know
Deep in jungle of new mexico
In the smoke he got his vision clear
Until the day he died and disappeared
Where he's gone no one can ever tell
another coin down in the wishing well
Under the influence, defenses down
You know what goes around comes around
Francia, Bretannia, Plougrescant, Estate 2022
La Maison du Gouffre or “the house between the rocks”, is a charming cottage wedged between two huge jagged rocks that has been drawing tourists to the otherwise quiet little village of Plougrescant, located in the department of Côtes-d'Armor in the region of Brittany, in France, since the 19th century. The house has her back turned towards the sea, against which her owner sought to protect her by building the house in a cradle between the two rocks to shield her from the violent storms that frequent this place. The tiny house was built in 1861, at a time when building permits did not exist, where anyone could build at will.
High Street, Westgarth, Victoria
Another little library in our area and this one seems pretty well fortified.
The cannon, which is one of two in High Street, actually came from the South Channel Fort in Port Phillip Bay which was part of the 19th century strategic defence network in the bay. I think we were worried about being invaded by Tsarist Russia in those days!
Their history is summed up pretty well here: heritage.darebinlibraries.vic.gov.au/article/381
There has been a push to return the guns to the fort but this has been resisted over the years latterly supposedly so the guns could deter a "yuppie invasion" of Northcote but I think we may have already lost that one!
(The other cannon can be partly seen on the far left of the image.)

When walking, the white heron has an elegant upright stance showing the extreme length of its neck.

There are quite a few of these around our suburbs often in people's front yards but this one is in a public place near a pedestrian crossing on our local railway line. Originally this was much smaller being only a couple of shelves and not well protected but someone has taken it upon themselves to replace it with this larger cabinet with doors.
A close view of the first dune line at Bournda Beach. Big seas over the last two or three years have ventured into the dunes. However, there is another much higher layer of dunes behind this so this beach is fairly well protected from erosion. Bournda National Park Far South Coast NSW.
... She was lost without her lotus, it was the only think she could not leave someone to have, not at this stage.... She did not realise that friend had stolen it, but that morning when she could not sleep, she realised it was gone. Despite she keeps it so well protected, it seems that someone stole it.
Of course it was this new friend she got closer to, of course, she analyzed it, and thought of a plan to get it back, she was not ready to loose it yet... The problem was that the guy was coming from another planet. She took her galaxy speed wheel and she waited that the guy was away, to get to the milky way reaching that next planet where she knew he stays. She sneaked in, she was good at hacking the doors card, she found her lotus flower delicately posed aside the bed, it was there like a book, she did not think further, she grabbed it and ran away as fast as she could to her planet back...

Aside from the skunk cabbage, the pasqueflower is usually the first spring flower that emerges in my area. You can see how well-protected they are from any cold snap. These were just coming up in the "goat prairie" on King Bluff in Great River Bluffs State Park near Nodine, Minnesota.
A distant view from a lockdown, keeping fit, walk near our home. The harbour is 20 km long and most ships dock at Port Chalmers which is 8 km from the sea. We live in an old volcano with its crater now become our harbour well protected from storms in the Pacific but I can't help worrying for many cities that are less protected as the sea rises.
A sunny Friday 19 C here and looking towards a fine weekend. We still have covid but in Auckland where cases are now dropping.
This remarkable Black Rhino Mother is nursing her year old calf. He's barely visible in the tall grass. The second horn on this female is quite long and makes her stand out for sure. Unfortunately, it also makes her more vulnerable to poaching. These Rhinos have been driven close to extinction by poaching. Although I'm not giving her exact location, she is living in a very well protected wildlife preserve.
The Southern White Rhino is Near Threatened according to IUCN on their Red LIst, and in Kenya mostly exist in well protected preserves. Their closest relative, the Northern White Rhino is essentially extinct because of poaching.
It was a privilege to get to photograph these wonderful little birds. The colony seems to be well protected by an electric fence which deterred one inquisitive dog. Also nesting with them were ringed plovers who’s chicks were running around in their almost cartoon like manner

The smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) is a freshwater otter species from regions of South and Southwest Asia, with the majority of its numbers found in Southeast Asia. It has been ranked as "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List since 1996, as it is threatened by habitat loss, pollution of wetlands and poaching for the illegal wildlife trade.
The smooth-coated otter is distributed in Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, southern China, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and on Borneo, Sumatra and Java. An isolated population lives in the marshes of Iraq. It has often been recorded in saltwater near the coast, especially on smaller islands, but requires a nearby source of freshwater. It inhabits areas where fresh water is plentiful such as wetlands, seasonal swamps, rivers, lakes and rice paddies. Where it is the only occurring otter species, it lives in almost any suitable habitat. But where it is sympatric with other otter species, it avoids smaller streams and canals in favour of larger water bodies.
In Singapore, smooth-coated otters have adapted well to urban environments, and have been observed to use urban structures like gaps under buildings as alternatives for holts. They also use staircases and ladders to get in and out of concrete canals with vertical or near‐vertical banks. This population is well-protected and steadily increasing. (Wikipedia)

We were watching the Chestnut-winged Cuckoo when this large otter appeared on the causeway behind us. He sniffed all over the ground, apparently detected an intruder and proceeded to mark his territory. We were perhaps 30 feet away but could still detect his musky aroma. Fascinating, though, to watch him so closely. He was totally uninterested in us. I was totally torn between the otter and the beautiful cuckoo. Oh, to have such problems every day :-)

Moulamein, NSW (ABCTV Victorian viewing area)
This small town in the NSW Southern Riverina is at the junction of two rivers, the Edward River and Billabong Creek both of which have recently experienced severe flooding, the worst for many years, perhaps on record.
Flooding on the vast plains abutting the Murray River in the Riverina and northern Victoria is a slow motion affair often taking weeks to arrive from further upstream, rising slowly and falling slowly. They are no less devastating for that inundating many farms and threading to inundate stream side towns most of which are fairly well protected by levees (but not all of them).
The town of Moulamein has fared better than some in that the town itself has not been flooded but all points of access have been cut off to all but local 4WD vehicles. I was lucky enough to be able to get into town last week with my brother who lives on a farm south of the town doing so in his Toyota HiLux.
Featured here is the Old Moulamein Courthouse which is now a local museum. It sits on the bank of the Billabong Creek just back from the junction with the Edward. It is not the first time it has been flooded but this would have been the highest yet.
The fascinating “Flying-P-Liner” has experienced many stormy adventures and exciting journeys across the oceans since it was launched. After a total of 39 circumnavigations of Cape Horn and many thousands of nautical miles, the ship retired in Travemünde "rigged", i.e. without sails. Since then, the tall steel ship has been lying majestically and well protected at the mouth of the Trave and has become the swimming symbol of the seaside resort.
Beach Gulpiyuri is a small beach located in Llanes, north of the village of Naves, halfway between the towns of Ribadesella and Llanes (Asturias, Spain), which was declared a natural monument on December 26, 2001 They also form part of the Protected Landscape of the Eastern Coast of Asturias. Only you can walk from the beach of San Antolin or from Ships and its isolation has allowed the relatively good preservation of this small and delicate natural jewel. The depth and size of the water area allows only to soak lying, but it is well protected from the wind.
