The smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) is a freshwater otter species from regions of South and Southwest Asia, with the majority of its numbers found in Southeast Asia. It has been ranked as "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List since 1996, as it is threatened by habitat loss, pollution of wetlands and poaching for the illegal wildlife trade.

The smooth-coated otter is distributed in Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, southern China, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and on Borneo, Sumatra and Java. An isolated population lives in the marshes of Iraq. It has often been recorded in saltwater near the coast, especially on smaller islands, but requires a nearby source of freshwater. It inhabits areas where fresh water is plentiful such as wetlands, seasonal swamps, rivers, lakes and rice paddies. Where it is the only occurring otter species, it lives in almost any suitable habitat. But where it is sympatric with other otter species, it avoids smaller streams and canals in favour of larger water bodies.

In Singapore, smooth-coated otters have adapted well to urban environments, and have been observed to use urban structures like gaps under buildings as alternatives for holts. They also use staircases and ladders to get in and out of concrete canals with vertical or near‐vertical banks. This population is well-protected and steadily increasing. (Wikipedia)

We were watching the Chestnut-winged Cuckoo when this large otter appeared on the causeway behind us. He sniffed all over the ground, apparently detected an intruder and proceeded to mark his territory. We were perhaps 30 feet away but could still detect his musky aroma. Fascinating, though, to watch him so closely. He was totally uninterested in us. I was totally torn between the otter and the beautiful cuckoo. Oh, to have such problems every day :-)

Moulamein, NSW (ABCTV Victorian viewing area)

This small town in the NSW Southern Riverina is at the junction of two rivers, the Edward River and Billabong Creek both of which have recently experienced severe flooding, the worst for many years, perhaps on record.

Flooding on the vast plains abutting the Murray River in the Riverina and northern Victoria is a slow motion affair often taking weeks to arrive from further upstream, rising slowly and falling slowly. They are no less devastating for that inundating many farms and threading to inundate stream side towns most of which are fairly well protected by levees (but not all of them).

The town of Moulamein has fared better than some in that the town itself has not been flooded but all points of access have been cut off to all but local 4WD vehicles. I was lucky enough to be able to get into town last week with my brother who lives on a farm south of the town doing so in his Toyota HiLux.

Featured here is the Old Moulamein Courthouse which is now a local museum. It sits on the bank of the Billabong Creek just back from the junction with the Edward. It is not the first time it has been flooded but this would have been the highest yet.

The fascinating “Flying-P-Liner” has experienced many stormy adventures and exciting journeys across the oceans since it was launched. After a total of 39 circumnavigations of Cape Horn and many thousands of nautical miles, the ship retired in Travemünde "rigged", i.e. without sails. Since then, the tall steel ship has been lying majestically and well protected at the mouth of the Trave and has become the swimming symbol of the seaside resort.

Beach Gulpiyuri is a small beach located in Llanes, north of the village of Naves, halfway between the towns of Ribadesella and Llanes (Asturias, Spain), which was declared a natural monument on December 26, 2001 They also form part of the Protected Landscape of the Eastern Coast of Asturias. Only you can walk from the beach of San Antolin or from Ships and its isolation has allowed the relatively good preservation of this small and delicate natural jewel. The depth and size of the water area allows only to soak lying, but it is well protected from the wind.

The good harbor conditions are largely natural and the warm and easily accessible harbor conditions in the area combined with the proximity to the Skagerrak made the harbor, first at Flekkerøy, then further into the fjord important already more than 500 years ago. The harbor is very well protected from wind and normally has tidal differences of + / ÷ 10 cm. The first fortifications were built in the 16th century and the naval station for the Danish / Norwegian galley fleet on Lagmannsholmen in the western harbor from the 1680s until 1750. In 1804, a quarantine station for shipping in Denmark, Norway and Holstein was built in the harbor. It was operated until 1814. From 1827, Kristiansand was the last port of call for the postal route from Christiania with the DS "Constitutionen" along the coast via Fredriksvern. In 1872, a ferry connection was established between Kristiansand and Fredrikshavn with DS «Frithjof». From 1897, the Armed Forces had a naval base and warehouse in Marvika. This facility has in recent years been used as a base for deepwater testing of submarines from Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW).

Happy almost weekend everyone! My dear friend, Oliver, and I decided to go explore some of the pretty autumn sims today, and of course Shep came along with us, cause no way is he missing out on any adventure! Needless to say, we ended up far from home and with no wi-fi signal, so when we stopped for a break, Oliver decided to play guitar in lieu of any actual music availability. I was thankful I had brought along my trusty clover headphones ... it tuned out most of this, uhm ... music. And as he was happily singing away, my ears were well protected from the dubious melodies! He had a captive audience of mice and chickens, so no lack of appreciation for his efforts!

Thank you, Oliver, for being patient and ever gracious while I took three forevers trying to get my take of this for the Flickr memory album, and for being such an amazing friend, and adding extra happy and laughter to SL and Flickr with your friendship! ❤️💕

A very large, grayish-brown owl with yellow eyes and distinctive ears. Note the fine barring and dark streaks on the pale underparts, and white patches on the shoulders. In flight, wings and tail are strongly barred below. Perches in tall trees, usually near a water body, where it waits for birds and mammals to pounce upon. The call is a distinctive series of low, guttural notes that increase in volume and speed before trailing off towards the end. (eBird)

The Britons Protection is an historic, Grade II listed public house on Great Bridgewater St, Manchester, England. Various dates are given for its establishment; the pub's own website says 1806, although its bicentenary was not celebrated until 2011; it has 1811 above the door. In any case, it was listed in Pigot and Dean's New Directory of Manchester & Salford for 1821 and 1822.

The pub's name recalls its use as an army recruiting venue. A set of murals inside the pub commemorates the Peterloo Massacre which took place in Manchester in1819. The pub is now well protected by the surrounding tower blocks.

As well as serving real ale, it is known for offering over 200 whiskies.

The pub was voted Best Pub in Manchester in the Pride of Manchester Awards in both 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. It is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.

Hiking above Dana Point I saw the striking formation of the harbor entrance. Looks like a well protected little beach on the right. What a beautiful place to live now. Tons of hiking trails to explore, restaurants to visit..all within walking distance. Oh, and there are more dolphins here than anywhere else in the world!

This little reindeer made of magic wool and pipe cleaners, which my daughter once made as a small child, adorns our Advent wreath every year during the Christmas season (together with other reindeer), after sitting well protected in its small box for the rest of the year.

With each passing year, it seems to become a little more fragile and sensitive, so it is carefully placed on the wreath and shines there with the candles. I am always happy about his little lovely wool face and the touchingly harmless pipe cleaner horns.

To all Flickr friends a peaceful, contemplative and beautiful (Christmas) time and for the New Year all the best, happiness and health. 💙💙💙

Those who live in this upscale neighborhood on the slopes of Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs enjoy spectacular surroundings. And they know that they are well protected by numerous military bases within spiting distance.

They also know that the mountain they live on is one of the most coveted military targets in the world, should war occur, because this lump of granite was hollowed out to contain NORAD, the North American AeroSpace Defense Command, and now houses the “Cheyenne Mountain Complex”, which contains fifteen steel buildings resting inside on huge springs, housing apartments, a nuclear shelter, the NORAD/USSPACECOM Combined Command Center, Combined Intelligence Watch Center, and much, much more. It is one of the world's most secure facilities, built to survive a 30-megaton nuclear blast, and it is fully EMP protected.

Unfortunately, I doubt that its neighbors on the outside will be invited to join them inside should war break out… but who knows… maybe as a gesture of neighborly kindness… ?

We arrived at Bannock before the hordes of tourists arrived so we had the place to ourselves for awhile. Bannock is a Montana State Park now and is well protected. Many of the buildings are in quite a rustic and deteriorated state but some of them have been restored.

It was rain rain rain everywhere in SG today. Was idling at home, a little disturbed and was bascially flickin away the whole morn, and just when the rain stopped ard noon, i quickly grabbed my gear, drove down to the gardens and thought perhaps i could probably have 2 hrs (the least) of macro shooitng, it started raining again!! Have to scurry for cover although my gear was well protected from my Matin Camo rain cover. It was a disappointing macro outing today which lasted only 25 mins!! The Vallée des Fantômes

The phantoms inhabit the valley at an altitude of 800 metres near the clear peaks. The trees are so well protected from winds that blowing snow from nearby summits causes up to three metres of snow accumulation, decking out the evergreens with a layer of soft snow that eventually camouflages them completely. These are the phantoms. It is guaranteed that you will experience a total change of scenery! After a good snowfall, the atmosphere is muted, the ground seems to be carpeted in cotton batten and the silence is omnipresent.

Taken from above Abbotsbury, this view looks east towards the Isle of Portland. The Fleet is an 8 mile long lagoon, It is tidal in that the far end opens into Portland Harbour. However, as various fresh-water streams and ditches also feed into the lagoon, the water is brackish rather than salty. To the ocean side it is protected by an 18 mile long shingle barrier beach, usually known as Chesil Bank. Both Chesil and The Fleet are relatively wild places, largely difficult to access and also difficult to walk along once you are there. Fortunately both form a nature reserve, fairly well protected by assorted designations.

I have said before you cannot imagine what it would have been like to be "on watch" in one of these concrete war blocks. The soldiers needed to be ready for anything and this coastline was well protected against enemy forces. There is a path to the left of this picture and I assume that would be the entrance. It is perched right on the top and I am wondering just how long it will be there.
