Finishing at Creston (It’s a good spot, but not one that you’d want to spend all day at) I got some lunch and headed back east. I was picking up some scanner chatter about a westbound, I couldn’t make out the details but it was enough to pull off. As it turned out I had two westbounds headed my way; the first was a rather conventional merchandise train:

On Friday, May 2nd 2014 the Impossible Project had it's Open-Day in the Factory in Enschede. My brother and i decided to attend.

Trainride from Hamburg was a bit long and only getting in for the 10am Tour meant i had to get up at around 2am :)

It was quite amazing to see where those films in my fridge come from and what is involved in making them. Seeing the drums of developerpaste kept reminding me of the Roger Rabbit movie ;)

Shot a roll of film while on the tour. Well... i think there are a few Kodak BW400cn pics in the Olympus AF Mini but that's not ready yet to develop.

Anyway... I hope you enjoy the pics although they are not that great and my chems where really on their last run.

---------------

I'm certain that this shot has been done to death, as I'm not exactly the first person to visit this part of the world. The car park was almost full at 5:45am! I'll take it as good practice until I get better at planning (and fitter for long hikes!)

Quite a subdued shot. I was hoping for more from the sunrise, but I don't think the clouds were high enough for that. I also don't think Portra is the right film for this sort of thing either, but I'll take what I can get. I have a some Velvia 50 in the fridge but I'm scared of it. Once I'm more confident I'll give it a go.

if you look closely you can see a few early morning walkers using the footpath. It shows scale quite well I think.

For reference the furthest peak is Lose Hill, and is approximately 2km away as the crow flies.

Shot box speed, despite being 23 years expired and having an unknown storage history.

Physical slides are very dark, and even with a high exposure setting in VueScan they were each pulled up another 1.5 to 2 stops in processing.

Color balance for mids and highs lead to significant magenta hue in shadows which was corrected for in some but not all of these.

A test shot with the new Adox Silvermax 100 film taken at the Pittock Mansion in Portland, Oregon. This shot really shows off what it's capable of, as this is a straight scan, no digital processing. The fact that there is no real loss of highlights on a bright sunny day, coupled with the amount of shadow detail is amazing.

Kodak Retina III, Hema 400, developed in the fujilab, scanned with my Epson Photo and Vuescan.

The darn Retina's lightmeter is actually working(!) an amazing fact after 48 years.

This camera is incredibly handy and can be used with gloves.

There is no Photoshop on this picture (neither on the rest of this series), the "texture" is the dirt on the train's dark windows.

With less than month till closure of Oxley 2B shed near Wolverhampton repairs are still being carried out.

On February 18th 1967 Black Five No. 45186 is in the lifting shop and is having attention to the cylinders.

45186 was a regular Oxley loco till closure of that shed and saw out its days at Crewe South 5B for a few more months.

Withdrawn in September 1967 it was cut up at Arnott & Young West of Scotland Shipbreaking Co. Troon in March 1968.

The site of Oxley shed is now used for the storage and maintenance of the Pendelino (sic) express trains for the Euston services.

Taken with an old Kodak Brownie Twin 20 Camera.

Kodak 120 Black and White film.

The resulting negative was a difficult one to print in the old ‘wet’ darkroom with the exposure correct for the foreground but the inside of the shed very underexposed.

I had better luck with digital technology.

The negative was scanned with an Epson 4490 using Vuescan® (I never use bundled scanner software). I experimented with the Vuescan® settings eventually deciding on B&W negative, Kodak TMax 400 D76 Cl.40 in the colour tab.

The resulting 16 bit raw file was saved as a Photoshop dng file.

From this I processed the file to expose correctly for the foreground which further washed out the shadow detail inside the shed and saved the file in psd format.

The dng file was processed for a second time and exposed for the shadow areas to bring out as much detail as was available inside the shed. This second psd file completely blew out the highlight detail.

The two files were then layered together and using layer masks the correct detail from each file was revealed.

Once merged the image required a further few hours to clean followed by further exposure correction using levels layers set to different blending modes.

The result a better print than I had seen in over 40 years.
