The upper and middle courses of the Volga begin to freeze at the end of November, the lower reaches in December. The ice breaks up at Astrakhan in mid-March, at Kamyshin at the beginning of April, and everywhere else in mid-April. The Volga is generally free of ice for about 200 days each year and for about 260 days near Astrakhan. As great masses of water accumulated within the reservoirs constructed during the Soviet period, however, the temperature regime of the Volga was so changed that the duration of ice increased on the headwaters of the reservoirs and decreased on the stretches below the dams. First Hacks/Hackers Meetup held at Atherton Studio at HPR. Great presentations by Ben Trevino, Jared Kuroiwa and Misa Maruyama.
This project was an attempt to visualize population density in NYC and the correlation it has to people feeling claustrophobic as a result. As well, it was also a reflection upon my own relationship to the city and the daily patterns that shape it.
I placed a proximity sensor in the front pocket of my jacket and logged the data it recorded for the 4+ hours I wore it. I then pulled that data into Processing to manipulate the image. As the distance between me and anything/anyone in front of me became closer, the image begins to blur.

This visualization looks east at the future SR 520/Montlake Boulevard interchange and lid. A rebuilt Montlake Boulevard is in the foreground, with landscaped open space and a regional transit hub immediately to its east. In the distance is the project's dedicated bike and pedestrian crossing over the highway.

This artwork by Finnish Janna Syväoja is located at EMMA Museum of Modern Art. It consists of approx. 5000 pieces of jigsaw puzzle, hanging from the ceiling. This visualizes exactly, how the content of the #cck08 course seemed to me in the beginning - well, throughout the course actually. The meaning of the #cck08 revealed to me is that there existed one planned selected frame of reference - where to start to pick up themes and details from and to form new wholes, piece by piece. Otherwise all the pieces would have remained hanging in the air, in the virtual and non-virtual space. CCK08 built the threads binding the pieces together, to a whole - a new kind of whole.
And what's most important: I learned to process the aspired whole piece by piece, one piece at a time. Choosing, keeping and occasionally checking the direction of learning, managing and living is what counts. The amount of pieces processed at one time does not. For this thinking process photoblogging => microblogging and => blogging are excellent ways of action. It can only be learned and discovered by trying, doing, writing, visualizing, chatting, by oneself - and one piece at a time.

This sculpture by Natalie Sutinen (born in 1972), can be seen in the art room at the Haninge Cultural Centre from today. The artwork has no name. It is made of wax, paper, books and feathers. Sutinen often works with wax dolls, and says that she wants to visualise death with her art.
This is a java applet produced using Processing that visualizes my personal friends network from Facebook. It clearly shows the different groups from schools that have attended over the years. The java applet looks a bit worse and runs slower than the standalone application, but it gives a pretty good idea of the project

Made for an Information is Beautiful Challenge, they provided the raw data, sources they used are listed below smoke stack. Concept and execution is mine. I also researched the uses and decided to visualize carbon emissions (black smog).
Key is on the left. Height dimension is years remaining until we are out of *known reserves currently economic to extract*, without recycling (many elements not recycled at present), assuming production growth continues to rise at current rate (lets hope not.)
Top width based on total known reserves, using log scaling. Bottom width based on amount used last year (also log scaled).
Three main uses for each element shown in factory line boxes. Smoke outline is the usual carbon emissions graph flipped onto a vertical axis (so that date is the vertical axis.) Dates only apply to the carbon emissions (note the drop after the Great Depression circa 1929.)
