I love finding conflict in the scenes I photograph. A sort of mismatch between visual elements that adds visual interest. Oftentimes it's all in my head. But even then it helps set the creative tone. The through line in my recent winter photos is the visualization of fallen snow as a substance full of depth and shadow, the complete opposite of the eye's perception. Nothing underscores that theme as much as this woodland scene. Brilliant backlight of the morning sun highlights new fallen snow perched on the branches as well as flakes in midair. It seemed as if so much as a sneeze would knock everything out of kilter. I found my conflict in the maze of vein-like shadows, cast by even the thinest branches. The brilliant light played magically against the shadowy foreground...bright white snow rendered in the darkest tones.

When the light of day crosses with the evening dark, it is a moment of sheer magic. As an observer you are aware of a transition and can see the change that is occurring. It lasts for little more than an instant and for me, represents the passing of time. That instant that lies between the future and the past we term the present. Except that it is visualized through light.
The tree in the forefront caught my attention and how the light shone on one side giving it great dimension. It sits in that transition point where light and dark mingle and further represents the present. I do enjoy attempting to tell a story in my work, and this one is no exception.
When I saw this I wasn't sure what it was or what it represented as workers were finishing the installation. Since then I've learned that it represents data visualization it reflects the global impact of food production and consumption on the environment. Part of the "Around The Table" exhibit at the New York Botanical Garden. I still don't understand it but it's nice to look at.

I have seen this shot done a hundred times and wanted to give it a try. It was not as easy as it looks! Getting a ring to stand in a book and getting the right shadow is a bit tricky. I also wanted to find a page in the book that enhanced the image and I think I found one...:)
Gathered yesterday with a group of other flickr group members (Newcastle Sundance) for a sunrise meet at Merewether NSW.
We were rewarded with a beautiful sunrise; give that the forecast was far less promising (it was supposed to be rainy and strong winds - they arrived later in the afternnon!)

Canon 7D + Tokina 11-16 lens @ 11mm.
10 second exposure at f22 ISO100.

The other night I went to downtown San Jose, California. It was the closing night of the Sonic Runway art display, located in front of the city hall. The Sonic Runway (bit.ly/2GhhWRH) is a corridor of lights that visualizes the speed of sound. The installation consists of a series of concentric rings, each lined with 277 addressable LEDs. Live audio input is analyzed and converted into a variety of intricate patterns that race down the corridor at the speed of sound (about 343 m/sec). Standing at the front of the Runway, you can see the beats of the music rippling away from you.
Three ladies had fun with selfies at the runway. I offered to take photos and send them later. Here is a candid shot.
I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and carefully adjusted the color balance and the curves. I welcome and appreciate your critical feedback.

This is an apparition that momentarily appeared in the sky over Nova Scotia, a portal to a higher spiritual dimension of reality. Or so I wish. Actually, it's a photo of an image on the computer monitor, an animated visual from the Milkdrop visualization software program associated with Winamp.
