Exposition of Max Pinckers in the old hospital chapel

(was part of Krasj, a 2 yearly art trail, which brings several modern artists together in several locations, spread over the city)

Max Pinckers is a Belgian documentary photographer, who became a nominee member of Magnum Photos in 2015. He grew up in Indonesia, India, Australia and Singapore.

How do you communicate, through photography, what it’s like to live in a city like Mumbai? A city of such variety, ethnically and economically, one of total poverty for so many and free of want for a few.

Traditionally, Western photographers have approached the city from a humanitarian perspective, using people – their expressions, gestures, moments of clarity – that might symbolize the social realities of the city.

Max Pinckers found a new way to visualize Mumbai. He photographed with a careful, cool composition, how human beings apply their creativity, how they problem solve, how, in the most basic ways, they use ingenuity to survive and overcome the hardships of their environment. Pinckers advocates a manifest subjective approach, which is made visible through the explicit use of theatrical lighting, stage directions or extras. Extensive research and diligent technical preparation are combined with improvisation to obtain lively, unexpected, critical, poetic and simultaneously documentary images.

When the light of day crosses with the evening dark, it is a moment of sheer magic. As an observer you are aware of a transition and can see the change that is occurring. It lasts for little more than an instant and for me, represents the passing of time. That instant that lies between the future and the past we term the present. Except that it is visualized through light.

The tree in the forefront caught my attention and how the light shone on one side giving it great dimension. It sits in that transition point where light and dark mingle and further represents the present. I do enjoy attempting to tell a story in my work, and this one is no exception.

Visualize yourself walking on the sand, listening to the water splash against the shore.

Visualize swimming, in the oceans, in the sky

Visualize sitting by a beach fire, warming up from the chilly air.

Visualize happiness that won't be suppressed, laughing.

It is the end of the day when the sun sets low, and the mood is sweet and peaceful.

When I saw this I wasn't sure what it was or what it represented as workers were finishing the installation. Since then I've learned that it represents data visualization it reflects the global impact of food production and consumption on the environment. Part of the "Around The Table" exhibit at the New York Botanical Garden. I still don't understand it but it's nice to look at.

I'm still trying to find the sweet spot, where serenity and beauty intersect. I think I'm getting close.

Crazy Tuesday: Here

The color red symbolizes intense situations and emotions but at the same time it indicates warning and danger.

My red sky is a sky which reflects strong human emotions, covering them like a blanket and thus giving a sense of safety and hope.

Danger, longing, visualization, power, love, pain, balance, joy:

eight human moments under the red sky.

This is my new work and I m very proud to exhibit it

This picture is #27 in the 100 Strangers Project - Round 3

Meet Janiece.

Its been a while that I have made any progress on my 100 Strangers project - the situation around the world needless to say isn't the most conducive, plus with the essential masks difficult to approach and make a connection. However, despite being completely unplanned as I waited in my car for picking up food - was difficult to not notice the elegantly yet vibrantly dressed Janiece, despite the mask as she strolled with her friend across the street - the resplendent red and her personality just appealed to the photographer in me. The green in the eyes was just the extra I needed. The always available spare camera in the car came in handy - as I made a quick approach and request. The young lady was happy to oblige - me with mask and socially distanced with the 105 mm lens being a big help.

Janiece is a teaching assistant working with autistic folks - a lot of them her age - and it was visible from her whole tone and enthusiasm of how much she loved what she was doing. Grabbing attention is not new to her - and that's not really surprising - her sense of fashion and her personality always gets her attention from random folks she candidly admitted. She has recently modelled for friends and one thing led to another and she ended up in a music video. An extremely articulate and expressive lady its a pity that I was rusty and seemingly lost my ability to keep track of all the information that she provided (part of the reason was that I was visualizing the pictures and forgot to commit all the details to memory). Her favorite memory - riding rollercoasters - apparently she got that from her dad who loved high adrenaline pursuits and she maintains the same. Her favorite quality of herself - that she is very nice - simple but she meant that she genuinely was just always nice to people (again not at all surprising from the vibe I had speaking to her)

Thanks much Janiece for being a part of the project and for the time and trust - it was great making your acquaintance. Hope you like the pictures.

Autoportrait à l'installation "les deux plateaux" du palais royal de Paris

This week's theme got me thinking. I could not visualize a #Radiant shot that fits the 3inches threshold except a burning candle and did not shoot a candle or bulb. Then I found this 1-inch size clay pot and the rest was easy. I simply put a burning stick inside it and shot it. Let me know your thought about my shot. Happy Macro Monday!

I really need to clean my camera sensor as when I put this image into Lightroom, I found so many dust spots. When using a small aperture like f/13 an more, any dust spots you have will be more noticeable.

Lightroom Tip

One way to check dust spots in Lightroom (which is the way I do it) is to press onto Spot removal when in Develop mode, at the bottom of the image you will see Visualize Spots, click on the box and then use the slider to the left and this will help you see dust spots more easily and get rid of them.

When done just press Spot Removal again.

Green leaves remaining from the summer past and golden autumn hues seem to blend together on a rainy afternoon at the beautiful Cedar Grist Mill, near Woodland, Washington.

Sometimes I forget that green and gold are next door neighbors on the spectrum, as I often tend to visualize quite a contrast in nature between verdant summer and the bright golds and other warm colors that autumn brings to go along with its cooler temperatures. In this idyllic place, on an afternoon when the weather mostly alternated between downpours, drizzles and mist (I think shot was taken during more of a light drizzle period), I found this sort of blended color palette quite beautiful.

Another interesting thing, that we didn't realize at first, is that some sort of good-sized salmon or trout were busily working their way upstream to spawn all the while we were at Cedar Creek. Someone later told us they were steelhead, which I learned is basically a type of rainbow trout that lives part of its time in freshwater and part at sea (I also learned the general term for freshwater fish that go to sea is "anadromous", so there's the random word of the day).

Anyway, before we understood what was going on, we'd periodically hear a smack, like a single hand clap, or a thud coming from the area of the waterfall that's just barely visible in the center of this image behind a veil of leaves. Once we realized that a spawning run was underway in the stream we ventured over to an overlook by waterfall and saw up close the cause of those sounds--fish that missed their jumps up the falls often were powered back against the rocks with quite a bit of force by the rushing flow. Getting upstream to spawn looked like very tough work for those beautiful fish. Its almost hard to believe they ever make it since they were having quite a time with this waterfall, and it wasn't much of a waterfall by Pacific Northwest standards. It was amazing to watch.

On a different note, for those of you who know this view well, I confess to using the creative license afforded by the cloning brush to remove from the scene the modern outdoor light fixture mounted just under the roof peak. Useful as it may be in the real world, it wasn't working for me in this image and thus had to go!

Thanks for viewing!
