Black Rock has had some wonderful murals and graffiti over the years. My personal albums are choc-o-bloc full of these artworks but I try any only post them on Flickr if there are relevant objects or people around the art. This wonderful piece warrants its own slot.

Saltdean Lido is a Grade 11 listed art deco building. It was designed by William Herbert Jones and opened in 1938. eighty years later, in 2018, it was named by English Heritage as one of the Seven Wonders of the English Seaside.

After years of neglect the restoration so far is magnificent and different areas have already opened including the pool, a gym, the library and the café.

Outside the cafe, she stood, texted, finished the cigarette and continued her way into the night.

It was about 7 am when I saw these guys coming towards me on the way to the beach with their boat. My eyes quickly checked the background and the sky - all perfect. I asked if I could take their photo and they laughed and said yes but then carried on pulling the boat until they stopped in front of the rubbish bins. At the same time I noticed another guy walking left into my frame. Fortunately I managed to click twice before two refuse collectors in hi viz yellow waistcoats started to empty the bins behind my frame. You couldn’t make it up!!

Our marina swans have been setting up a nest deeply below a cliff path wall. I walked along just as a family with two children were collecting suitable nest material to throw down to help the swans. Meantime while they’re building their nest they have one blue egg balanced on the edge of the water.

a man drifts through a slice of light like thought through memory, suspended in a fleeting geometry of shadow and stone. the ground beneath him is history — uneven, worn, deliberate — and above, forgotten sneakers swing like relics of stories once lived.

This art piece features the photographer as both the subject and creator, exploring the duality of light in photography. A man, who is the photographer, sits on a bench holding an umbrella, shielding himself from a strong light source. The umbrella creates a striking silhouette against the textured brick wall, emphasizing the contrast between light and darkness.

A weekend never goes by without seeing a few mods on their vibrant scooters on the roads of Brighton. Brighton wouldn't be Brighton without them.

I love the textures, the shapes, the colours and the grime in this shot. They're the sort of things I only notice when I've taken the subject, which in this shot was the seagull crossing the crossing.

These guys had secured the best viewing spot on a corner where all the old cars came past. They'd arrived well prepared with their flask of tea and their chair.

The starlings going to roost under the pier and photographers capturing their flight from the pier.

I follow a Flickr site called 'Photo Tricks' and I'm intrigued as to how the photographer creates what is clearly a trick.

This photo isn't a trick... it is as I took it ? I don't now how the lamp post curved in the same direction as the turntable ladder. If it was because I moved then the image would have blurred but its clear. Wish I knew what I did as it creates quite a neat affect which is in harmony with the scene.

I tried to desaturate the sun but it just ended up with a yellow glow instead of the orange.

Time to walk the dog, join an exercise class, stroll on the beach or stop for brekkie.

Nothing but blue skies for today's event.

Bridgetown, Barbados - January 2025: Crowds interact on a bustling street in Bridgetown, Barbados. The late afternoon sun casts a warm glow on colorful buildings as pedestrians navigate their daily routines.

The location, Bridgetown, is the capital and largest city of Barbados

Hanningtons was a department store located in a central position in Brighton with an unbroken history of trading for nearly 200 years until its closure in 2001. This beautiful mural remains as a reminder.

This stunning portrait of a bear aims to raise awareness of IAR’s Break the Cage campaign.

Walking through the Brighton Laines I came across this beautiful mural tucked in an alleyway off Bond Street. I recognised the artist as Amy Kelly Miller @amykm.art who does some fabulous work for International Animal Rescue. I’ve photographed some amazing work of hers around the Laines and around local schools. She’s created some fabulous murals of orangutans rescued and rehabilitated by Uckfield-based International.

I got lucky with the weather today. Beautiful light, blue skies, fluffy white clouds, fabulous reflections and sunshine.

A beautiful pink sunrise today and I couldn't decide whether to focus on the bigger picture of the sky with the sunrise or the smaller frame of the cormorants. Then the guy in the bowler hat stepped into my focus and my decision was made.

Have a good day!

Actually took my Canon R out for an airing today. Decided to practice slow shutter speeds and ICM. My biggest challenge was how I changed from AV to TV - not a clue. In my defence I've rarely used it since lockdown 1.

From the Brighton train - Unfortunately the train was travelling too fast for me to capture all of the church structure on the right and the Walkie-talkie building on the far left, in one frame.

Walking through Jubilee Square, North Laine, I saw two girls sitting chatting with their backs to me. I noticed their faces reflected in the windows of the Jubilee Library and thought what a lovely photo it would make. As I walked towards them they turned their heads and smiled so I introduced myself, explained my street portrait project and asked if I could take a few shots. They smiled happily and were fine with me taking their photo. My original idea of photographing their backs and reflections went out of my head.

Love this old TV ad. So much of it has come true already, especially in Covid times.

No other feeling than having a ride or die soulmate right behind you …. for life

Mum is 94 today but didn't believe me when I wished her happy birthday and she asked how old she was. She insisted I was only joking. So I sang 94 today and she sang 21 again.

Mum was diagnosed with vascular dementia almost 10 years ago. She'd probably had it a good few years before we noticed something was wrong and we got the diagnosis. Her biggest issue has always been her memory as information goes in one ear and falls out the other ear...... gone forever. The family all came for a staggered lunch yesterday and I took photo's of each of them with mum so I could make a book for her. Sadly this morning she doesn't remember anybody visiting yesterday and when I show her the pictures she doesn't know the names of many of the family.

On the plus side she giggles all the time as can be seen from the photo and everybody else will remember her laughing, giggling and singing through the day.

NB: I did ask everybody to do a PCR test before they came and we had the windows open all day. Something else to look back on in years to come!

One of those 'right time - right place' photo's. I was just walking past the Peace Memorial when a guy came along and threw a few large pizza bases onto the ground. It was every seagull, pigeon and starling for themselves. I love the seagull standing on his piece of pizza. There's no way any other bird is getting a bite.

When I first set up my Flickr album 'The Changing Face of Black Rock' my intention was to capture the rejuvenation as it happened. .......but all the changes are happening elsewhere around the original Black Rock site - the beach, Dukes Mound and Madeira Drive. The only visible changes happening on the actual site is the graffiti. The graffiti artists have a field day at the weekend virtually repainting the whole site.

Pollution in the inner harbour

'What is this life, if full of care,

we have no time to stand and stare'

Leisure by William Henry Davies.

I took the time this morning to sit and stare at what was happening on Black Rock beach. Then I took the time to read the beautiful words on the plaques on the back of the bench. I've never noticed them before.

NB: 3 month project building boardwalks and planting native plants.

As I was getting the bus stop into my frame Rachel and Sam came along with perfectly coordinating summer outfits. Definitely dressed for a glass of gin ‘Oddly Infused with Rose and Cucumber’.

I bought a 150-600 lens many moons ago as I really wanted to capture the herons nesting. 13 years later and I spent an hour watching them coming and going from the nests.
