Introduction to Les Landes in the 1850s and before
In the mid-19th century, Les Landes in southwestern France was a markedly distinct region, enveloped by vast tracts of peat and sandy heaths, intertwined with dense, impenetrable maritime pine forests. The landscape was challenging, shaping a way of life that was rugged yet profoundly connected to the natural world.
Poem about Les Landes in the 1850s and before
Beneath the broad grey sweep of sky,
Les Landes lay, in mists and wildness wrapped,
Where stilts walked upon the sodden lie,
In heart of heaths, with peat so densely capped.
Sheep's call carried softly on the wind,
Through silent watch of pine's green guard,
Here life was harsh, but truly unconfined,
In nature’s raw and unyielding ward.
Hope grew with every pine's young shoot,
Roots grasping in the fleeting sands,
Man, in struggle with nature's brute,
Found strength in lands they daily spanned.
Each dawn brought toil and sweat anew,
In Les Landes' quiet, proud earth,
Where stories in silence grew,
And life's simple truths were given birth.
Two Haikus
Mist drifts softly in,
Pines whisper in quietude,
Stilts tread the tough earth.
Sand meets the vast sky,
Sheep wander 'neath stormy clouds,
Heath pulses with life.
The bowl on the top is a wash basin. I don´t like to move around stuff to much when being out exploring old buildings and settlements. Not that I think anyone would care to much, but anyway. Found these behind an old outhouse yesterday.
There are so many fine details rusting/fading away around us. To me, it´s a very interesting question why we, or at least some of us, find things like this beautiful. Of course they have a history to tell, but besides that? Why do we see things, patterns, a crack in a wall, and such as beautiful, or at least very interesting to the eye?
Writing about this, I recall a starry night long ago. Me and a friend gazed at all the beauty up there... My friend said something like: "God must be an amazing dude, making all this beauty!" What amazed me even more, was the question why we are amazed and thrilled by this? What created that sense in us? Why? To feel love for the things we see around us? I have studied arts and I have studied theology for many years, but these questions still begs for a satisfying answer... I have some clues and theories why though, but I won´t write about that now... :)
Maybe you have had the same thoughts too? Maybe not.
