Black-fronted Dotterel

Scientific Name: Elseyornis melanops

Description: The Black-fronted Dotterel is a small wader with a distinctive black face-mask and breast-band and prominent chestnut scapulars (shoulder feathers). In juveniles, the breast-band is initially absent but a brown band slowly appears as the bird develops. Legs are pink orange, and the bill is red with a black tip. The dark eye is ringed with red. In flight the wings look broad and the tail short, while the black and white contrast is striking. Flight is slow with almost hesitant wing beats. This species is also called the Black-fronted Plover.

Similar species: The adult and immature Black-fronted Dotterel are unmistakable, though the juvenile could be confused with the juvenile and immature Red-capped Plover.

Distribution: The Black-fronted Dotterel is widespread throughout Australasia.

Habitat: The Black-fronted Dotterel is found in the shallow margins of wetlands, lakes, rivers, sewage farms, storm drains and marshes. It is normally always near freshwater and is not often seen on the coast.

Seasonal movements: Breeding resident.

Feeding: The Black-fronted Dotterel eats small molluscs as well as aquatic and terrestrial insects. When it forages, it keeps its body horizontal while bobbing its head to look for food, often running then stopping suddenly to peck at food items.

Breeding: The Black-fronted Dotterel lays its eggs in a shallow scrape, often on pebbly ground and quite close to water. It may have more then one brood per year. Both parents incubate the eggs and look after the young.

Calls: Sharp 'tip' call, singular or repeated three or four times.

Minimum Size: 16cm

Maximum Size: 18cm

Average size: 17cm

Average weight: 32g

Breeding season: September to February

Clutch Size: 2 to 3 eggs

Incubation: 27 days

Nestling Period: 25 days

Watching the sun crashing into the lake at such close-up you get the sensation that you can touch it, that the flares might fry your camera.

Zelfs de sloten en de klink zijn weggemoffeld.

A very beautiful resident bird prized by the photographers due to its beautiful plumage. The one here is a male, but the female is even far more colorful and beautiful. I sighted 2 males and a 3rd one which I could not determine the sex. We were exploring a new area and these birds just flew right from under our feet scaring us for a few moments. They circled around and landed at some distance away.

Outside of its breeding season it is quite hard to spot. Also, the bird times its presence to align with the sowing reason and the post harvest season when the fields are wet and muddy both the times. The bird has a preference to the wet areas where we find them pretty much.

I suspect the male was watching the chicks and hence was trying to distract us by flying away so quickly and openly. It was also flying at eye level height instead of the usual close to ground mode. The males in the species watch the chicks while the polyandrous females leave after the eggs are laid.

Thanks in advance for all your lovely feedback and views. Much appreciated.

The most striking feature of Messe Basel - New Hall designed by Herzog & De Meuron and opened in 2013 is the cladding made of perforated aluminium skin with modular undulating stripes. In the centre of the structure there is a square, called Messeplatz, naturally lit through a large open circular ceiling.

Exquisite Second Life Imagery [Opted Out on Flickr Limit]

Very cold temperature, fog at night and no wind are the perfect conditions to let these fragile flowers grow.

Kamera Canon EOS 5D Mark III

The sun was going down very fast light was getting low I chose to use long exposure with ISO 100 for this I put my camera on the roof of my car with the support of my camera bag and used self timer. The reflection on the roof of my car was unintended, came out good so decided not to crop it. No PP not even cropping!

EXPLORE Highest position: 4 on Monday, July 27, 2009

Early spring, 2024: mating season for aquatic newts on my NC property. This male is swimming beneath the female to both display himself and put his nose in the appropriate spot to assess readiness.

A few moments later, the male grabbed the female from behind. They curled into a spinning ball as he wrestled her to the bottom and then deposited his sperm package on a leaf for his partner to uptake through an opening called a cloaca, leading to her sex organ.

Though not a very romantic union, the birthing process is surprisingly tender. The female lays 2 or 3 eggs per day, gently nestling them in floating plant roots for protection. Hatchlings remain there until ready to venture forth.

Very sad to see it go ....it was such a beautiful place :(

A very common duck species found across the subcontinent usually in shallow lakes and ponds. These birds prefer marshy vegetation surrounded by clumps of trees or rice fields which they use for roosting during the nights and for nesting.

The birds are quite active at night, but during day time, they just rest on the banks of the lakes. Occassionally, they fight amongst themselves and this shot was taken during one such moment when this bird flew away from a small group to join another group. The birds nesting season is underway, so in many place we can see the chicks. And where there are chicks, we see raptors too flying above, and hence the chicks tend to stay close to the parents.

Thanks in advance for your views and feedback. Much appreciated.

Billy Joel - River of Dreams

In the middle of the night

I go walking in my sleep

From the mountains of faith

To the river so deep

I must be looking for something

Something sacred I lost

But the river is wide

And it's too hard to cross

Even though I know the river is wide

I walk down every evening and I stand on the shore

I try to cross to the opposite side

So I can finally find out what I've been looking for

In the middle of the night

I go walking in my sleep

Through the valley of fear

To a river so deep

I've been searching for something

Taken out of my soul

Something I'd never lose

Something somebody stole

I don't know why I go walking at night

But now I'm tired and I don't want to walk anymore

I hope it doesn't take the rest of my life

Until I find what it is that I've been looking for
