Bull elk in velvet..

RMNP Colorado

Found on unfenced land north of Vasse Hwy between Jarrahwood and Busselton. Western Australia, Australia.

This was among several velvet ant species that were crawling about on bare soil surface near a leaf litter strewn area at side of dirt road. This one stopped once in a while from its constant running about, allowing me to get a few in-focus shots.

Found here: 33.78006S 115.58291E.

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie and plastic cup diffuser.

Such a lovely day today. Great to see this Velvet Skoter at Sovereign Harbour. 15-12-20

Breeds in Scandinavia and western Russia, and winters mostly in the Baltic Sea, as well as the Atlantic coasts of Western Europe and the Mediterranean. So wonderful to see it here.

Velvet-purple Coronet

This medium-sized hummingbird looks all blackish in poor light, but at the right angle, it turns into a dazzling gem with a purple belly and crown, turquoise sides, and greenish wing coverts. Note bright white flashes in the tail. Like other coronets, it holds its wings up for a few seconds when it lands, exposing rich chestnut underwings. Sexes similar. Very restricted range in western Colombia and Ecuador, where it is generally uncommon in moist cloud forest and edges in the lower subtropical zone. Visits feeders.

Yes, deer wear velvet in summer. Specifically bucks. These two came racing in my direction and then stopped for a photo op before moving into the forest. The start of antlers signals a change of the seasons, as bucks prepare for Fall rut. Lots of Canada Geese in the background.

Thanks for the views, comments and faves everyone! :)

Powerful bull elk with antlers covered in velvet

The Isle of Skye, (an t-Eilean Sgiathanach in Gaelic), takes its name from the old Norse, meaning ‘cloud island’, a Viking reference to the often-mist-enshrouded Cuillin Hills. It’s the second-largest of Scotland’s islands, a 50-mile-long patchwork of velvet moors, jagged mountains, sparkling lochs and towering sea cliffs.

The stunning scenery is the main attraction, but when the mist closes in there are plenty of castles, crofting museums and cosy pubs and restaurants; there are also dozens of art galleries and craft studios to pass the time.

Along with Edinburgh and Loch Ness, Skye is one of Scotland’s top-three tourist destinations. However, the hordes tend to stick to Portree, Dunvegan and Trotternish – it’s almost always possible to find peace and quiet in the island’s further-flung corners. You need to go prepared for changeable weather: when it’s fine it’s very fine, but all too often it isn’t!

I took this shot in a small place called Sligachan, on the A87 at the end of Lock Sligachan. There were only a couple of buildings in the place, a hotel, a restaurant and a campsite. I don’t think you could even call it a village. This small pool caught my eye with the mountains in the background and the velvet moors in between.

I don't know for sure if Velvet Rose is the correct name for this particular variety or not and I am not sure if it is an actual Heirloom species. But they grew in a patch behind my great grandmother's house. They survived a transplanting to my grandmother's home and a second transplanting to the homestead here; a journey that spanned over 100 years and several hundred miles. The name followed them, changing only sightly through the years from Grandma's Velvet Rose to Great Grandma's Old Fashioned Velvet Rose.

Like a sprinkle of powdered sugar on a rich red velvet cake, this scene from the ESA/Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter captures the contrasting colours of bright white water-ice against the rusty red martian soil.

This delightful image was taken 5 July 2021 and soaks in the view of a 4 km-wide crater in Mars’ north polar region of Vastitas Borealis, centred at 70.6 °N/230.3°E.

The crater is partially filled with water ice, which is also particularly predominant on its north-facing slopes that receive fewer hours of sunlight on average throughout the year.

The dark material clearly visible on the crater rim – giving it a somewhat scorched appearance – likely consists of volcanic materials such as basalt.

Most of the surrounding terrain is ice free, but has been shaped by ongoing aeolian processes. The streaks at the bottom right of the image are formed by winds that have removed the brighter iron oxide dust from the surface, exposing a slightly darker underlying substrate.

TGO arrived at Mars in 2016 and began its full science mission in 2018. The spacecraft is not only returning spectacular images, but also providing the best ever inventory of the planet’s atmospheric gases, and mapping the planet’s surface for water-rich locations. It will also provide data relay services for the second ExoMars mission comprising the Rosalind Franklin rover and Kazachok platform, when it arrives on Mars in 2023.
