This is the actual name of this magnificent specimen. It is an important piece, one gotten from a private collection and displayed by a vendor at the Tucson Rock and Gem Show. It was found in 1890 at Bisbee, Arizona, long a world-known site for azurite and malachite as well as copper.

The photo was taken through glass, and the vendor held up a flashlight for me to take this picture. Velvet Beauty can be yours for a mere $25,000. It is the finest specimen I have ever seen of one of my favorite minerals. I believe the chunk weighs about 3 pounds and is about 9" in diameter. As often, I recommend seeing the large or original size view.

I don't know for sure if Velvet Rose is the correct name for this particular variety or not and I am not sure if it is an actual Heirloom species. But they grew in a patch behind my great grandmother's house. They survived a transplanting to my grandmother's home and a second transplanting to the homestead here; a journey that spanned over 100 years and several hundred miles. The name followed them, changing only sightly through the years from Grandma's Velvet Rose to Great Grandma's Old Fashioned Velvet Rose.

Species #677

Velvet-Fronted Nuthatch, Sitta frontalis, Patuk Dahi Hitam

A noisy bird found in southern Asia from Pakistan, India, to south China and SouthEast Asia. It is a member of the nuthatch family. A resident breeder of all types of woods, although open evergreen forest is the optimal habitat. It has the ability, like other nuthatches, to climb up and down trees, unlike species such as woodpeckers which can only go upwards. It is an active feeder on insects and spiders, and may be found in mixed feeding flocks with other passerines. Nests are in tree holes or crevices, lined with moss, fur and feathers, or grass. Often the nuthatch needs to enlarge the hole, but a large hole may have the size of its entrance reduced by the building of a neat mud wall. Three to six eggs are laid, white speckled with red.

Like a sprinkle of powdered sugar on a rich red velvet cake, this scene from the ESA/Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter captures the contrasting colours of bright white water-ice against the rusty red martian soil.

This delightful image was taken 5 July 2021 and soaks in the view of a 4 km-wide crater in Mars’ north polar region of Vastitas Borealis, centred at 70.6 °N/230.3°E.

The crater is partially filled with water ice, which is also particularly predominant on its north-facing slopes that receive fewer hours of sunlight on average throughout the year.

The dark material clearly visible on the crater rim – giving it a somewhat scorched appearance – likely consists of volcanic materials such as basalt.

Most of the surrounding terrain is ice free, but has been shaped by ongoing aeolian processes. The streaks at the bottom right of the image are formed by winds that have removed the brighter iron oxide dust from the surface, exposing a slightly darker underlying substrate.

TGO arrived at Mars in 2016 and began its full science mission in 2018. The spacecraft is not only returning spectacular images, but also providing the best ever inventory of the planet’s atmospheric gases, and mapping the planet’s surface for water-rich locations. It will also provide data relay services for the second ExoMars mission comprising the Rosalind Franklin rover and Kazachok platform, when it arrives on Mars in 2023.

Red velvet ants are actually wasp. The females such as this one are wingless and have a nasty sting.

Not many fungi around now, had a lovely walk in the sunshine with Lotty today.

This little critter is a velvet worm. If it reminds you of something, think of the "Cat Bus" in the Miyazaki film "My Neighbor Totoro"; in fact, in 2013 a new species of velvet worm was named Eoperipatus totoros. Velvet worms are neither worms nor arthropods -- they are ancient creatures, dating back almost half a billion years, alone in their own phylum (Onychophora). They are undeniably cute, but are also predators -- they shoot a glue-like slime out of nozzles on their faces to snare prey. This is the only one I've ever seen -- found by others in our group in Ecuador.

Saw three young bucks in velvet this morning. I almost never see the big boys outside of the rut. Our beautiful world, pass it on.
