It seems that hugely overdone, hyper-saturated photos have become all the rage out here lately. I call it the Black Velvet School of Photography. So I did one, just to see what Flickr folks thought of them.

A Velvet Ant that I photographed at Lake Waterford Park in Maryland.
"The name “velvet ant” is a misnomer. These insects are not ants but are, in fact, wasps. Males are winged and are not frequently observed by most people. Females are wingless, ant-like in general appearance, and may be seen scurrying about on the ground. Both males and females are covered by dense, velvety pubescence, hence the name velvet ant. They are also sometimes called “cow ants” or “cow killers” (although there is nothing to indicate that any cow has ever been killed by one)."

Having too much fun processing my Lensbaby photos. This is another one taken in Clemson, SC at the SC Botanical Gardens. These Snow Drops were photographed against a very dull brown background of mulch. To enhance it, I added the Kathleen Clemons Painted Flower No. 9 texture. I think it fits pretty well.
Thanks for viewing my photos. Comments are always welcome.

Friday night's best friend..!!
Actually, I'm a beer guy.. which is exactly what I did.. hung out with a couple of good friends after work for an hour or so.. took a few of pictures there, but didn't turn out good at all...
So, after coming home, I opened the liquor cabinet (yes, I do have a small cabinet) and got this bottle out of the collection. I've had this one for more than 5 years, but have never opened it.. yeah, go figure!
Anyhow, wishing you all a fantastic weekend.

About
I've been wanting to visit this place (Point Halloran) for a few months now, Matt told me the tide is going to be good. This is a Sunrise, taken this morning.
So I organized a Flickr meet this morning and mother nature came to the party.
I really love how the clouds move during the 30 or so seconds, really adds some interesting texture.
Oh, and by the way, I had my camera serviced on Friday, sensor cleaned, so no 'dust spot' cloning this time ;)
This shot is 3 RAW files, shot in 'M' mode using the bulb exposure for each shot, the third exposure was close to 35 seconds.
- ISO 100, f9, 34 seconds, 16mm
- Sigma 10-20mm Lens.
- Tripod.
Processing
- HDR, 3 exposures [2,0,+2EV] shot in RAW/ISO100 at f/9, using Sigma 10-20mm lens.
- Saturation tweaking in Photoshop to bring out the colours, and darken the sky.
- Various cloning to remove some small lights in the distance
- Noise reduction in Lightroom 2.0
- Added a upsharp layer.
HDR
- Tone mapped using Photomatrix HDR, in detail mode.
- Saturation for highlights.
- Slightly tweaked the yellow/reds.

Flammulina velutipes, AKA velvet foot/Enoki, amongst other names. Apparently has great health properties, but don't quote me on that! Introduced into NZ, now naturalised in many places.
Found in the absolute breathtaking sandstone country surrounding Alice Springs, this ancient gecko was only recently described and found to have no living close relatives, becoming isolated in the arid ranges of Central Australia.

Velvet apple, is a fruit native to the Philippines with the scientific name Diospyros blancoi. It is closely related to persimmons.it is characterized by having a fine, velvety fur on the skin, from which the common name is derived. it has an upleasant scent comparable to durian and a unique taste that eating this fruit is acquired and may turn off first timers. however, once one has overcome the smell and the taste one will be surprised to enjoy the potential health benefits of this fruit

Moose of Grand Teton
Moose are the largest member of the deer family and love cold weather. They frequent marshy meadows and edges of lakes and streams. About 800 Moose inhabit the southern part of Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park and surrounding national forests. Moose are most heavily concentrated in Grand Teton Park.
To keep from sinking in mud while feeding, as the animal lowers its foot, a large dewclaw spreads to better support the weight. Similarly, the odd-looking crook of the hind leg allows a Moose to pull the leg straight up, more easily releasing it from deep, sucking mud.
Bull Moose lose their antlers anytime between December and March. Most of the Moose drop them in January. Immature bulls may not shed their antlers for the winter but retain them until the following spring. Female Moose do not have antlers.
A new set of antlers begin to grow the following spring, nourished by the covering of furry skin known as velvet. They take three to five months to develop fully – the velvet is then scraped and rubbed off against bushes and branches. The antlers are then ready for battle. Generally, each set of antlers will be larger than the one before.
Birds, carnivores, and rodents eat dropped antlers as they are full of protein and Moose themselves will eat antler velvet for the nutrients.
Take note—cow Moose with young can be particularly dangerous.

This is the Velvet Buzzsaw, a cocktail created by Matt Hunt in 2019 for Death & Co and published in Death & Co Welcome Home in 2021. This spritzy gin cocktail puts raspberry (in syrup form) as the main character, but the supporting cast is vital to make this drink actually interesting. Gin and raspberry is classic combo seen easily in the Clover Club, which forms the foundation of this drink. Layered with that is rhubarb liqueur which famously pairs with berry flavors. Campari brings some bite and citrusy notes to help this cocktail avoid being a bit of a fruit salad. A tiny bit of blanc vermouth compliments all other previously mentioned flavors, and lemon juice provides the necessary acidity to bring this into balance. The whole cocktail is crushable yet offers some fun complexity.
1.5 oz London dry gin (see note)
0.5 oz Giffard rhubarb liqueur
0.5 oz Campari (see note)
0.25 oz Dolin Blanc vermouth
0.75 oz raspberry syrup (homemade is best, DM me for recipe)
0.5 oz fresh lemon juice
cold seltzer
Build all of the ingredients into a chilled white wine glass except the seltzer. Add a few 1-inch ice cubes and top with approximately 2 oz of cold seltzer. Stir gently to combine. Garnish with a lemon wheel.
Note: I modified this recipe a bit. The original contained 1.25 oz gin and 0.25 Campari, but I felt like that version was too sweet and not bitter enough to my liking.
