This fossorial snake envenomates prey with a side-swiping motion while its mouth is closed. This is a useful adapation for its underground lifestyle.
I always the enjoy the challenge of distinguishing the Azures from the Variables. They do like to sit on the same plants together! This male is showing all the typical features; not always the case.
The Variable Checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona) is noted for the variablility in coloration of it's larvae and adult forms. It also has the name Chalcedon Checkerspot.
Observed in the Coast range mountains of San Luis Obispo county, California.
This is a Variable Checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona) butterfly curled around a flower head of non-native Black Mustard (Brassica nigra) in the Brassicaceae plant family. It appears to be feeding with its proboscis out, but its a sham - its really looking out for other butterflies to chase away, or hopefully arrange a "hook up". (San Marcos Pass, 27 May 2012)
I was up on the ridge above the headwaters of Paradise Creek today looking for hill-topping butterflies. These butterflies seemed to be having turf wars with the Pale Swalowtails, chasing each other away in a circle game! (See my [Older] photo.)
The Variable Oystercatcher can be found throughout New Zealand, however the population is estimated to be around 4000 birds.
The birds mate for life and raise the chicks together, usually in October each year.

The variable oystercatcher (Haematopus unicolor) is endemic to New Zealand. The Maori name is torea-pango. Curio Bay.
Plantago varia Variable Plantain. Very, very common amongst the vegetation under the trees at Moggs Creek yesterday.
