I was walking a trail with my friends Karen and Jim when this one landed on Karen's arm. Karen patiently stood still while Jim and I got our shots. This is the largest Dragonfly we see in Canada. Hard to get a nice open shot of one like this. Thanks Karen.

Des limicoles pas très craintifs
En se rendant, à marée basse, sur l'Île aux Amours, il y avait un petit groupe de limicoles qui cherchaient nourriture. Probablement très affairés à fouiller partout, ils prêtaient peu attention aux passants. Ce Bécasseau Variable m'a offert une belle opportunité.

Shorebirds not very fearful
When I went, at low tide, on the island "Ile aux Amours", there was a small group of waders looking for food. Probably very busy searching everywhere, they paid little attention to passers-by. This Dunlin offered me a beautiful opportunity.

I believe this is the "Chalcedon" Variable Checkerspot Butterfly. It took me awhile to ID it. It seems that, like other species, this butterfly suffers from loss of habitat. It feeds on the Sticky Monkey Flower which were also seen in this area of Figuroa Mountain. Always rewarding to spend some time observing and learning about nature.

Munchin' a mozzy. Their numbers have got through the roof at Westhay in the last week. Hopefully the dragons will do the same in the next day or so.
Le Bécasseau variable (Calidris alpina), également appelé bécasseau à dos roux, est une espèce de petits oiseaux limicoles de la famille des Scolopacidae.
Le Bécasseau variable est le plus fréquent des bécasseaux en automne, animant les grèves de nos lacs le temps d’une escale. Au printemps, celle-ci sera probablement la seule de son odyssée à travers le continent: pressé par la pulsion irrésistible de rejoindre le ballet des noces, il daigne alors à peine s’arrêter entre ses quartiers d’hiver, situés sur les côtes méditerranéennes ou atlantiques, et sa toundra natale en Scandinavie ou en Sibérie.
