This is the first pretty Variable Checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona) butterfly that I've seen this year. It's "puddling" - taking moisture and minerals - from fallen leaves in the garden. I hope we see many more, but I haven't seen many caterpillars this year. We'll see what happens. (San Marcos Pass, 16 May 2014)

It was supposed to be cooler today, but it was another warm day, up to 100° at the river where I was. I hope it really will cool down tomorrow.
