This young Variable Hawk was busy consuming a fairly large bird; not sure of the species.

This caterpillar was found in Ventura County, California at about 2000' elevation. I found were several along the trail.

I always the enjoy the challenge of distinguishing the Azures from the Variables. They do like to sit on the same plants together! This male is showing all the typical features; not always the case.
The Variable Checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona) is noted for the variablility in coloration of it's larvae and adult forms. It also has the name Chalcedon Checkerspot.
Observed in the Coast range mountains of San Luis Obispo county, California.
