I always the enjoy the challenge of distinguishing the Azures from the Variables. They do like to sit on the same plants together! This male is showing all the typical features; not always the case.

The Variable Checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona) is noted for the variablility in coloration of it's larvae and adult forms. It also has the name Chalcedon Checkerspot.

Observed in the Coast range mountains of San Luis Obispo county, California.

The Variable Oystercatcher can be found throughout New Zealand, however the population is estimated to be around 4000 birds.

The birds mate for life and raise the chicks together, usually in October each year.
