Most schools just come up with something that sounds about right. Lots of words no-one understands. We set out with ASW to find out what really underpins their community.
Toutes les espèces de cervidés actuellement présentes en Nouvelle-Zélande y ont été introduites au début du siècle dernier. Dans les années 60, il devint manifeste que les populations sauvages de cervidés, qui n'avaient pratiquement pas de prédateurs naturels, se multipliaient très rapidement dans les aires protégées et dégradaient les pâturages naturels. C'est pourquoi le gouvernement a recruté des chasseurs pour tenter de limiter leurs effectifs. Au début, la plupart des carcasses n'étaient pas utilisées, mais elles représentaient un potentiel économique qui a bientôt amené à développer une industrie pour traiter la venaison.
Au même moment, quelques agriculteurs se sont mis à étudier les possibilités de capturer les cerfs et de les élever dans des enclos. Malgré des résultats initiaux peu encourageants, en raison de difficultés administratives et techniques, cette activité s'est peu à peu organisée. Depuis 10 ans, le nombre d'éleveurs de cerfs s'est accru de manière spectaculaire, de même que les profits économiques, contrairement à l'inverse de la tendance générale constatée dans le secteur agricole.
Le nombre de femmes d'élevage de cerfs est passé de 979 en 1980 à environ 4500 aujourd'hui. Le nombre effectif d'animaux dans les femmes et ranches, qui était d'environ 104000 en 1980, a dépassé 600000 en juin 1989 (Thorley, 1989). Les cerfs sont devenus pratiquement des animaux domestiques et ils font maintenant l'objet d'un élevage intensif visant à obtenir un rendement maximal.
Au cours de la campagne annuelle se terminant en juin 1989, la Nouvelle-Zélande a exporté environ 32 millions de dollars néo-zélandais (18,6 millions de dollars U.S.) de venaison. Si on y ajoute les bois en velours, denrée médicinale recherchée (voir encadré) et autres produits, la valeur totale des exportations est de 45 millions de dollars N.Z. (26,1 millions de dollars U.S.).
L'élevage des cerfs est maintenant une activité économique bien établie non seulement en Nouvelle-Zélande, mais également en Australie, en Chine, dans plusieurs pays d'Europe, aux Etats-Unis et au Canada. Des quantités croissantes de produits étant mis sur le marché mondial, la concurrence entre les élevages devient plus vive, et il faudra donc des méthodes de gestion plus intensives. Nous examinerons ci-après quelques-unes des pratiques de gestion et de commercialisation appliquées actuellement en Nouvelle-Zélande, dans l'espoir que cette information donnera des idées utiles sur ce qui pourrait être fait dans d'autres pays pour organiser un élevage prospère de cervidés.
All deer species currently present in New Zealand were introduced at the beginning of the last century. In the 1960s, it became apparent that wild populations of deer, which had virtually no natural predators, multiplied very rapidly in protected areas and degraded natural pastures. That's why the government has hired hunters to try to limit their numbers. At first, most carcasses were not used, but they represented an economic potential that soon led to the development of an industry to process venison.
At the same time, some farmers began to study the possibilities of capturing deer and raising them in pens. Despite initial results that were not encouraging, due to administrative and technical difficulties, this activity gradually became organized. In the last 10 years, the number of deer farmers has increased dramatically, as well as economic profits, contrary to the general trend in the agricultural sector.
The number of women raising deer has increased from 979 in 1980 to about 4500 today. The actual number of animals in women and ranches, which was about 104,000 in 1980, exceeded 600,000 in June 1989 (Thorley, 1989). Deer have become virtually domestic animals and are now intensively farmed for maximum yield.
During the annual campaign ending June 1989, New Zealand exported about $ 32 million in New Zealand ($ 18.6 million) from venison. Adding the velvet antler, the desired medicinal product (see box) and other commodities, the total value of exports is NZ $ 45 million. (U.S. $ 26.1 million).

Below we will discuss some of the current management and marketing practices in New Zealand in the hope that this information will provide useful insights into what could be done in other countries to organize a successful breeding program in New Zealand.

If Earned Media is any indication of of where we stand in the fight for
climate and environmental justice and a sustainable future against coal
exports, than the tide has turned in favor of activists and the
communities we strive to protect. The coal export battle is truly being
fought in the court of public opinion. Giant-sized sympathetic visuals
conveying the values we stand for and what threatens them, and an
engaging experience that helped communities feel a sense of shared power
were all prominent in the earned mainstream media coverage in Spokane
that included two television spots and the front page on their local
paper. The iconic imagery resonates so well that those in a position to
decide the regulations and even the coal export proponents were enamored
with it, excited, and joyful as they took pictures of and with it. We're
