There's an underground economy of boosted books. These values are commonly understood and roundly agreed upon through word of mouth, and the values always seem to be true. Once, a scruffy, large man approached me, holding a folded-up piece of paper. "Do you have any Buck?" He paused and looked at the piece of paper. "Any books by Buckorsick?" I suspected that he meant Bukowski, but I played dumb, and asked to see the piece of paper he was holding. It was written in crisp handwriting that clearly didn't belong to him, and it read:

This is pretty much the authoritative top five, the New York Times best-seller list of stolen books. Its origins still mystify me. It might have belonged to an unscrupulous used bookseller who sent the homeless out, Fagin-like, to do his bidding, or it might have been another book thief helping a semi-illiterate friend identify the valuable merchandise. I asked the man whether he preferred Bukowski's Pulp to his Women, as I did, and whether his favorite Thompson book was The Getaway or The Killer Inside Me. First the book chatter made him nervous, but then it made him angry: He bellowed, "You're just a little bitch, ain't'cha?" and stormed out.

 

I'm not sure where Aleister Crowley goes on this list, but one one bookseller told me that anything by Crowley had to be kept locked up behind glass or it would be stolen immediately. Link (Via Hang Fire Books)

The Door Between Then and Here (2020) takes metaphor as both a method of communication and a subject to be investigated. Harnessing the imaginative potential of urban voids and the creative possibilities of neural networks, my photographs wander the borderlands between urban and rural, natural and man-made, fact and fiction. At one level, my work is engaged directly with “urban wasteland”: I am interested in the aesthetics, ecology, and social value of these spaces. But at a more fundamental level, my work is concerned with objective structure, subjective experience, and the unavoidable mixing of the two. Urban wasteland is urban wasteland but it is also more than that: it is a specific instantiation of liminal space. And as such – as both node and void – it has the potential to act as a metaphorical doorway; to reveal something about how we perceive, imagine, record, and recollect reality.

Each event will explore a different theme relating to equality, health inequalities and human rights. The next gathering will take place in May 2013.

I like to do quick value sketches on location before starting a painting. Its a tremendous help in planning the basic structure and exploring what’s important in the scene. Traditionally artists have used pencil, charcoal, or ink to draw value sketches. I thought I’d explore using the iPod Touch instead. It’s the right size – screen size is about 2 x 3 inches which is the size I usually make in a sketchbook. It’s also handy. It fits in my shirt pocket and I always have it with me and I already use it to take reference photos.

 

I experimented with several different painting apps. I first used Sketch Club which I like because I can make custom brushes and it has an eight step grayscale color palette. I also tried ArtRage and Sketchbook Mobile, but rejected them. ArtRage on the iPod creates files which are too small and Sketchbook has too clumsy an interface. I really like Procreate on the iPad, but the iPad is too big to carry around conveniently. The best was Brushes. It makes nice large files and you can playback a movie of your painting process.

Even before ISB became ISB, championing equitable access to high-quality science education was a core value of our founder, Dr. Lee Hood and his wife, Valerie Logan. As we celebrate the 5th Annual Valerie Logan Luncheon on November 29, we ask you to support our ongoing commitment to providing K-16 faculty professional development, high school STEM curriculum development, undergraduate research internships, and, crucially, student access to diverse mentors. Together, we can inspire young minds to unlock their potential as future researchers and support all students to become science-literate citizens who can make important decisions about the world we will live in. We will honor Ellen Ebert as the 2016 recipient of the Valerie Logan Leadership in Science Education Award for her advocacy and achievements in expanding access for our children to quality science education.
