Originally built in 1820 in the Federal style, utilizing the foundation of an earlier cabin dating to 1795, the mansion known as Bellevue was built for the family of Newport’s founder, General James Taylor, whom once owned an estate that covered the entire East Row Historic District, including Mansion Hill, and the modern-day towns of Dayton, Kentucky and Bellevue, Kentucky. The neighborhood of Mansion Hill is named for the mansion, which was once larger and more imposing than it is today. The house suffered a major fire in 1842, after which it was rebuilt in the Greek Revival style, with a one-story ionic portico on the principal facade, facing the river, and service wings flanking the central pavilion of the house. In 1848, following the death of James Taylor, the house passed to his son, Colonel James Taylor, whom lived in the house and ran the estate until his death in 1883. By the time of the death of Colonel Taylor, the house had fallen into disrepair, and was subdivided into a boarding house. The vast Taylor estate was subdivided at this point into the various towns and neighborhoods that today exist east of Washington Avenue in Newport, creating the suburban towns of Dayton and Bellevue. By 1887, the house, by this point in a deteriorated state, was slated to be demolished in order to run Overton Street all the way down to the riverfront, with the grounds of the house, all that remained of the estate, slated to be subdivided into lots upon completion of the street. However, the grandson of General Taylor, Jon Taylor, and his wife, Betty Washington Taylor, stepped up to save the house, leading to a major renovation that saw the original service wings demolished, and the house was reoriented away from the river and towards 3rd Street with a new Queen Anne-style iron porch on the rear, which became the new front facade, and a new service wing added to the original front facade, extending towards the river, covering the original front entrance. The grounds on either side of the mansion were subdivided, and several grand houses in various Victorian styles were built on the lots. In 1919, the house was sold by the Taylor family, and was bought by the Vonderhaar & Stetter Funeral Home, whom remained in the building through several owners until 1996. The house has since become home to a local law firm, whom has updated the structure, while restoring obscured or altered original features. Today, the building is the oldest structure in the city of Newport, and has survived for two centuries, lending the name to both the surrounding neighborhood and a nearby suburb.

This particular project
utilized all of Manhattan
as exhibition area,
including UN, Communist
Chinese Embassy, Taipei
Cultural Center, MoMa,
Rockefeller Center, etc.
With a projector on a
truck, I projected the
image of a Christmas tree
decorated with flags of
various countries -
including that of an
independent Taiwan -
unto the various
buildings. These images
were see by
approximately more than
500,000 people.
In Gordian Knots Chin
Chih attempts to express
the twisted relationships
between nation states
involved in the conflict
between Communist
China and Taiwan fueled
by Taiwan's desire for
independence. For this
piece, he tied over 2300
flags into knots using an
ancient Asian technique.
Christmas tree lights are
intertwined in the flags
and the Gordian Knot has
assumed the shape of a
Christmas Tree. This
piece functions both as a
Christmas decorations
and also a challenge to
the strong emotions
surrounding flags. It is a
reflection of human
relations, inevitably
marked by mutual
dependence and conflict.
It is customary to fly the
national flag outside the
buildings of consular
offices. That is not the
case at the Taipei
Cultural Center. Only
upon entering, can one
see the flag raised high in
the lobby. There, a white
sun superimposed on a
big blue sky and the red
earth (the design of the
ROC flag) hangs from the
ceiling. Chin Chih Yang's
attempt to comment on
this situation was deemed
too controversial to be
displayed at the Taipei
Cultural Center
Thus the exhibition
"Beyond Measure" itself
functions as a challenge
to cherished American
freedoms - both the
freedom of speech and
the freedom of religion.
This left Chin Chih with
the only alternative
available, namely to
project the image on the
outside of this and other
buildings from a truck.

Built in 1930 and expanded in 1938 and 1959, this Art Deco-style 11-story office building was designed by Arthur Peabody to house various government offices for the State of Wisconsin. The building’s north wing was constructed first, with the central wing being completed in 1938-1939, utilizing funds from the New Deal-era Public Works Administration (PWA), and the south wing in 1956-1959. Despite the long time span from the building’s origins to its completion, very few of the decorative details were changed and remained remarkably consistent despite the rise of the modernist movement and the Art Deco style falling out of favor by the time the south wing was completed, which in most circumstances led to buildings with portions that did not match the original vision. The building was apparently despised by Frank Lloyd Wright, whom called it a “monstrosity to anyone who thinks” and went on to call the City of Madison a “provincial capitol” that was “neither scholarly or gentlemanly.” Nevertheless, the building is a popular and generally well-liked building by the citizens of Madison. The building is the tallest office building in Downtown Madison, owing to its location close to Lake Monona, which includes a two-story podium that has a parking area on the roof, and the building sits right at the 187-foot height limit imposed throughout Downtown Madison to not block views of the State Capitol dome.
The building is faced with gray granite blocks and is E-shaped, with a tall 11-story tower in the center flanked by two wings of six and seven stories that are at equal height, with the adjacent street sloping downwards along the width of the building’s facade. The stone blocks are mostly unadorned, but the building’s east and west wings feature intricately carved reliefs on the spandrel between the first and second floors, in the spandrel between the fourth and fifth floor, in a ribbon on the sixth floor between window openings, and on the parapet, with additional decorative reliefs over the entrance doors and decorative pilasters with acroterions at the top that run between the paired windows on the second, third, and fourth floors. The eleven-story central wing features a band of decorative carved reliefs at the spandrel between the second and third floors, at the spandrel between the sixth and seventh floors, at the spandrel between the eighth and ninth floors, between window openings on the tenth floor, and around the top of the parapet on the tower and on the penthouse, with decorative Egyptian-inspired columns flanking the front entrance, and pilasters between paired windows on the third through eighth floors that terminate at acroterions on the ninth floor. The tower tapers at the eleventh floor to a narrower parapet, with the windows arranged in pairs at recessed portions of the facade that align with the smaller parapet above rather than the larger structure below. The building’s entrance doors are made of bronze with bronze Art Deco-style sconces on the east and west wings and an art deco chandelier at the main entrance at the base of the tower. The main entrance in the tower features a large transom with decorative bronze trim and a carved decorative stone trim surround, decorative lamppost fixtures flanking the window bays on either side of the doorway, featuring shields with the state motto, “Forward,” emblazoned on them, and is somewhat repeated on the west wing, though simplified, with the original entrance in the east wing being the smallest of the three entrances, with only a pair of doors in an unadorned recessed opening The windows on the “shaft” portion of the building’s design composition often feature recessed black-painted spandrel panels, with the windows at the top and bottom not including this feature. The decorative trim work continues around the side of the building and onto the rear facade facing Lake Monona, but is absent from the two light wells that flank the central tower, where portions of the facade are instead faced with buff brick, though still featuring the same fenestration pattern. The two wings also feature recessed penthouses faced in buff brick, with the east wing’s penthouse being added with the 1938-1939 construction of the tower wing and being smaller than the penthouse atop the later west wing.
The interior of the building is mostly modernized and relatively unremarkable office space that has been modified in multiple renovations. However, the main lobby features beautiful and colorful terrazzo floors, multi-colored marble wall cladding, bronze railings, fixtures, doors, and trim, decorative trim on the ceiling, including shell and floral motifs, and geometric chevron motifs. The space has been extensively described in publications and articles, but it appears that no images of it exist or are available, which sadly makes this treasure something that the public is unable to enjoy or appreciate. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and today houses the offices for multiple departments of the State of Wisconsin. The building has undergone renovations and restorations in the past four decades, which have retained its beautiful exterior and most notable interior spaces, while allowing it to meet the needs of the state’s office workers.

I utilized an image that I had taken of an abandoned industrial building in Baltimore and added some skeletons to it. It's amusing to imagine that on Halloween the ghosts of long deceased workers return to the site and reminisce about happier times when the building was the site of active industrial production.

This lightning-caused wildfire is being utilized to return natural fire to the landscape in an effort to restore forest health and reduce fuels. Our group of experienced, professional wildland firefighters will conduct a series of firing operations to safely and methodically burn the fuels between the main fire and our established containment lines, reintroducing low-intensity fire to the landscape. Some of the benefits include;
Enhancing meadows by reducing the encroachment of pines into these areas and increasing wildlife forage.
Minimizing the spread of disease and insects in the forest
Removing unwanted non-native, invasive plant species
Recycling nutrients to promote healthy soils
Reducing fuel loading by consuming dead and downed woody material, including logs, brush, needle cast, and stumps
Reducing ladder fuels and stand density by eliminating smaller-diameter trees
The plan for the Little Yamsay Fire is to systematically and safely burn approximately 6,000 acres in a three-phase sequence. An additional phase four block is also being prepared for a firing operation if conditions allow. Our effort will add to the existing footprint of the 3,200 acre Dillon Creek Fire, which will result in nearly a 10,000-acre treated buffer to protect values at risk from future wildfires.
A Type 3 Incident Management Team (IMT) assumed command of the Little Yamsay Fire Tuesday, April 30 at 0600 to allow the Fremont-Winema National Forest to focus on conducting prescribed fire.
Fire managers have developed a plan consisting of three phases of firing operations to achieve objectives:
Phase One will increase the fire footprint by 1,208 acres. Phase One was completed May 3.
Phase Two will add another 1,055 acres. Phase Two was completed May 9.
Phase Three will include additional 3,712 acres. Phase Three was completed May 12 with additional acreage from the Yota precribed fire unit.
The three-phase firing operation is complete. The final size Little Yamsay Fire is 6,340 acres. Here's the progression map with acres burned with corresponding dates. As of May 13, 2024 fire managers are evaluating conditions to bring fire into phase 4, which would increase the total acreage by 815 acres.
Fire reintroduced into the landscape creates significant buffers which will break up the landscape into 10,000 to 20,000 acre treated parcels that will protect against catastrophic wildfires like the Bootleg Fire. A successful wildfire buffer was observed in the Blackhills Project Area that the Bootleg Fire burned through.
Natural ignitions are an excellent opportunity to get fire back on the landscape and encouraged in the Wildfire Crisis Strategy. Without reintroducing fire onto the landscape at the proper scale, more catastrophic fires that burn up entire ranger districts and towns will continue to happen.

The 26th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade utilize the Individual Movement Training lane on Camp Edwards training site during annual training, July 26, 2016. The Soldiers used individual and buddy team movements to navigate the obstacles, before rendering first aid, calling in a nine-line MEDEVAC and moving an injured Soldier to a predesignated landing zone, for extraction. The IMT lane is one of many training opportunites available on Camp Edwards that the 26th MEB has taken advantage of during training. (Massachusetts Army National Guard Photos by Sgt. The arsenal in Ulm
The beginnings of the armory in Ulm lie in the 14th century. The first mention for the year 1433 is proven.
As usual for armories, utilized the free Imperial City of Ulm the building for centuries as an arsenal, where guns, bullets of stone and iron, grenades, bombs, various guns, as well as sulfur and saltpeter were stored. Temporarily the Ulmer (people) but also stored models of fortifications, bridges, mills, buildings, machinery, water pipes and the like in their armory. In addition, the building also had numerous other uses. Among other things, was here the Imperial Mint. On the square in front of the armory on important occasions town meetings were held.
The original construction of the armory has been extended several times: 1522, 1596, 1616 and 1667. The result was a sprawling complex of buildings. The built in 1667 New Armory shows a for the Baroque typical ashlar stone marking and facetted stones framing of the windows. Salient are also the decorated with Baroque and Renaissance motifs portals.
Late 18th century, one assessed the value of all that was kept in Ulmer armory with two million guilders. However, the Austrians in 1797 in advance of the Napoleonic Wars took the entire content in possession: that it did not fall the advancing Frenchmen in the hands? In Ulm they saw these objects after the battle of Elchingen (1805) never again. With the end of the Imperial City era the arsenal in 1808 was converted into barracks and used until 1919 as such.
During World War II, the Renaissance building, the Old Arsenal, fell victim to the heavy destructions. The remained untouched of war destruction parts of the building were restored in 1977. They bear bear still today witness of the economic prosperity that the free Imperial City of Ulm in the Middle Ages had attained.
Recently restored, the Lion and the Knight building for events can be rented.
