...this cottage still looks beautiful. Until a couple of years ago, this was the home of our biology teacher and his wife. They lived here for about 5 decades. The maturity and extent of the planting reflects the care that they took.

Back to lake Ullswater in Cumbria, taken in the late evening, two image put together one of the sky and the other of the lake and boats!

The Boxdorf Windmill is a former windmill built in 1849 in Boxdorf, a district of Moritzburg.

Until 1652, the Boxdorfer and the Reichenberger farmers had to grind their grain in the Plauenschen soil and in the (somewhat closer) Ockrilla Lease Mill. With the Saxon Constitution of 1831, the grinding force fell away.

The first mill at this site, a wooden pint mill, was built in 1839 by the miller Münch from Zuendorf on the Boxdorf Galgenberg (also: Gallberg). The grinding mill was able to grind eight to ten talents of flour daily. In 1847, the mill was sold to Müller Friedrich Wilhelm Seeländer from Weferlingen near Magdeburg. The mill burned down in a thunderstorm in 1849 in full operation.

Friedrich Wilhelm sold the remains to his brother Heinrich Christoph Seeländer and ran the Loschwitz watermill himself. Heinrich Christoph rebuilt the mill in 1849 as a stone, defensive-tower-like Dutch mill. This is testified by a sandstone with an engraved year above the original entrance door. Six years later Friedrich Wilhelm returned to Boxdorf in 1855 and took over the mill again from his brother. Around 1860 the house belonging to the mill was probably destroyed by arson. The existing residential building was then built.

In the German War of 1866, the Saxon Army, allied with Austria, gathered near Dresden and occupied the mill. The miller was no longer allowed to grind grain as a pressing.

Friedrich Wilhelm Seeländer died in 1877 as a result of a war suffering. Since his descendants had other professions or were too young, the mill came into foreign hands. Friedrich Hermann Müller bought the mill with three meals and a bakery for 11,100 marks. A lightning strike on 27 June 1887 did not result in a fire. Nevertheless, the roof, wings and wave were destroyed. Since in the meantime more efficient working machinery companies had taken over the business, a repair was no longer worthwhile. The mill came to a standstill.

The owner Müller was granted a concession for coffee and beer serving in 1890. Müller opened an economy and on the tower of the mill a wooden observation deck. This was replaced in 1904 by the still existing stone structure with pinnacles.

In 1921 Paul Gantze purchased the mill and had an electric grinding plant reached inside. He moved the banquet to the neighbouring apartment building. In 1927 he built a small hall. The property became a popular excursion restaurant that was in operation until the 1950s.

Barred Owlet

In early June of last year, I'd had the privilege and pleasure of seeing and taking pictures of a Barred Owl family in the local park.*

Two owlets were located, perched a few metres apart high up in the safety of the tree. Not too far away in another tree were the parents, both sleeping. The owlets were clearly relaxed, just acting naturally, scratching an itch every now and then, using the talons to preen and clean.. Although the light was not ideal and the setting quite congested, which made any photography challenging, I am happy I was able to take some shots of this owl family.

* Many thanks to Ivan Deng for letting me know that the owlets had fledged, and above all, for graciously offering me a ride to the trail to photograph this owl family.

I also like to mention that I truly enjoy the company of Ivan and also Don Delaney whenever I go birding with them. I am not exaggerating - their hearing is supernormal, and that has always got my day off to a happy start. I must say I am no novice in the woods, but quite often I have not heard or seen a thing until they point it out to me.

I'm on holiday in Scarborough until Sunday, so my uploads will be hit and miss

This owl flew to get away from me but, surprisingly, looped back and flew right back towards the utility pole near where I was standing. Thus, it apparently forgot what it was doing. It flew right at me until it got very close, realized its error and pealed off, giving me in-close side shots too. I wish that this kind of behaviour were more common.

Until recently it was believed that this alkaline steppe was formed by the clear cutting of huge forests in the Middle Ages, followed by measures to control the course of the Tisza River, allegedly resulting in the soil's current structure and pH. However, Hortobágy is much older, with alkalinization estimated to have started ten thousand years ago, when the Tisza first found its way through the Great Hungarian Plain, cutting off many streams from their sources in the Northern Mountains. The formation was finished by grazing animals and wild horses during the Ice Age, followed by domesticated animals.

Requesting suggestions for a desktop PC. Tried lots of different ones...so many are geared for the gamer and not so much towards the photographer. Appreciate your feedback.

The Tonnara di Scopello dates back to 1200 and is one of the oldest in Sicily. The activity continued until 1984 and every year, on average, about 500 tuna were caught.

The tonnara rises in a magical inlet, framed by steep cliffs and bathed by clear waters. The stacks emerge from the sea a few meters from the shore and make this small gulf even more fascinating.

The tonnara is located in Sicily, in the western part, in the locality of Scopello.

Scopello is a small fraction of the Municipality of Castellammare del Golfo, in the province of Trapani, which has about 400 inhabitants.

La tonnara sorge in un’insenatura magica, incorniciata da ripide scogliere e bagnata da acque limpide. I faraglioni sbucano dal mare a pochi metri da riva e rendono ancora più affascinante questo piccolo golfo.

November comes

And November goes,

With the last red berries

And the first white snows.

With night coming early,

And dawn coming late,

And ice in the bucket

And frost by the gate.

The fires burn

And the kettles sing,

And earth sinks to rest

Until next spring.

The first engagement occurred during the night of the 29–30 May 1982 when the 3rd Assault Section of 602 Commando Company, led by Captain Andrés Ferrero, ran into Air Troop from D Squadron, 22nd SAS, on the slopes of Mount Kent, sustaining one casualty (First-Sergeant Raimundo Viltes), abandoning much of its equipment to the anger of Major Aldo Rico, their Commanding Officer. The SAS sustained two wounded during the contact.

SAS patrols from Air and Boat Troop squadrons and Major Delves' tactical headquarters (THQ) fought a number of actions with the Argentine Special Forces before the Argentines were forced to withdraw. The SAS's Air Troop patrol was at first driven but managed to hold onto the summit of Mount Kent until Royal Marine reinforcements arrived.

For the last three years, usually starting up in December, I've heard the wintertime courtship of the Great Horned Owls as they begin to announce their breeding intentions with their very recognizable hooting patterns. The female has the higher voice and the male, the rich bass. The breeding couple often exchange a pattern of calls, or engage in a duet, for a good period of time. It's actually a very soothing sound and a reminder of how the life cycle continues throughout the year no matter how frigid it is outside!

I had imagined they have taken over a nest nearby but had not seen them until now. I was more than thrilled when I spotted this GHO out on a snag going down towards the meadow as it turned towards nightfall. With no hint of sun left in the sky and only the flat foreboding look of another very very cold night ahead, I took pictures in this lifeless atmosphere!

If you want to hear and see some of these behaviors, I have attached a link for you.

Humpback Covered Bridge (1857), Covington Virginia

"You never know what's there until you cross over." Anonymous

And also, you never know what the weather's going to do to you until you get there. The day started fairly well at Lexington but by the time I reached the bridge, not so much; completely overcast. Still, if nature gives you poor light, make a creepy photo, which at this 160+ year-old original bridge is fairly easy.

Humpback, at 106 feet long, is the only surviving curved span covered bridge in the USA and is the oldest covered bridge in the state of Virginia. The bridge was built in 1857 over Dunlap Creek, just west of Covington, when it replaced three previous bridges that were built and then later destroyed by floods; hence the added feature of an elevated arch to get this replacement span above the flood zone. The fact that Humpback Bridge is still standing with only one restoration 70 years ago is impressive, the fact that at the time it was built using only broad axes and put together with hand hewed locust pins is incredible.

The title is meant to have double meaning, as the phrase is commonly used to refer to the afterlife. Although those of us familiar with John 3:16 already know...

until you make it. White Christmas is one of the dreams most of us have since their early childhood. As in previous years my home area East Westphalia enjoys a green Christmas time and we have to look back several years to remember significant snowfalls. So please forgive me to fake a little bit by posting an older picture with snow, just to show the younger ones that there was a time with real Winter. Enjoy your holidays. Green Story

....::: posing with my friend Dior :::...

Until the next time...

I'm so used to shooting wildlife but lately have been trying to explore new scenes. This is very new to me, lol a tractor.

Lie, awake

and Watching you run through my head

I'm alone again

but not for long my friend

We face, another day

And distance has come, and taken you far away again

but I'll see you soon my friend

and then I'll sing you my song

I can't

Go home alone again

No I can't

My friend

Until then

Eyes I recognize

Taken me back, familiar to me from some other time

or maybe another life

remember our time

and know who I am

the memory it stays until we can breath as one again

and I'm coming back my friend

and then I'll sing you my song

Oh yeah

I can't

go home alone again

No I can't

go home all alone again

no I can't

my friend

Until then

Furillen

After more then two months of recovering from my knee injury I finally went out again! I would have loved to visit the beach but this is still a bit too much. Kinderdijk on the other hand is easily accessible and I was so happy to shoot a nice sunset with a bit of glow. I also bumped into another photographer and we had a nice chat about everything that makes this hobby so worthwhile. Well, you don’t know what you miss until its gone and I’m looking forward to get out more often coming weeks!

Thanks for having a look! All faves and comments are highly appreciated!
