...this cottage still looks beautiful. Until a couple of years ago, this was the home of our biology teacher and his wife. They lived here for about 5 decades. The maturity and extent of the planting reflects the care that they took.

Wood Warbler - Phylloscopus sibilatrix
The wood warbler (Phylloscopus sibilatrix) is a common and widespread leaf warbler which breeds throughout northern and temperate Europe, and just into the extreme west of Asia in the southern Ural Mountains.
This warbler is strongly migratory and the entire population winters in tropical Africa.
It is a summer visitor to the United Kingdom, seen from April until August. It has declined there in recent years. It is now very rare in Ireland, where only one or two pairs are recorded breeding in most years, usually in County Wicklow.
Various factors associated with forest structure, including slope, forest cover, proportion of broad-leaf forest, canopy height and forest edge length, all influenced the occupancy rates of this declining forest species. Conservation measures are therefore required that provide and maintain the wood warblers preferred forest structure. There is also a preference for forest in the non-breeding season, however this habitat is declining in wintering areas such as Ghana. Despite the decline in forest habitats, there has been no change in number of wood warblers as it appears that this species can use degraded habitats, such as well-wooded farms. However, further loss of trees will likely have a negative impact on this species in the future

Short Eared Owl - Asio flammeus
Over much of its range, short-eared owls occurs with the similar-looking long-eared owl. At rest, the ear-tufts of long-eared owl serve to easily distinguish the two (although long-eared owls can sometimes hold its ear-tufts flat). The iris-colour differs: yellow in short-eared, and orange in long-eared, and the black surrounding the eyes is vertical on long-eared, and horizontal on short-eared. Overall the short-eared tends to be a paler, sandier bird than the long-eared.
The short-eared owl occurs on all continents except Antarctica and Australia; thus it has one of the most widespread distributions of any bird. A. flammeus breeds in Europe, Asia, North and South America, the Caribbean, Hawaii and the Galápagos Islands. It is partially migratory, moving south in winter from the northern parts of its range. The short-eared owl is known to relocate to areas of higher rodent populations. It will also wander nomadically in search of better food supplies during years when vole populations are low.
Hunting occurs mostly at night, but this owl is known to be diurnal and crepuscular as well. Its daylight hunting seems to coincide with the high-activity periods of voles, its preferred prey. It tends to fly only feet above the ground in open fields and grasslands until swooping down upon its prey feet-first. Several owls may hunt over the same open area. Its food consists mainly of rodents, especially voles, but it will eat other small mammals such as mice, ground squirrels, shrews, rats, bats, muskrats and moles. It will also occasionally predate smaller birds, especially when near sea-coasts and adjacent wetlands at which time they attack shorebirds, terns and small gulls and seabirds with semi-regularity. Avian prey is more infrequently preyed on inland and centers on passerines such as larks, icterids, starlings, tyrant flycatchers and pipits.
A cat in greenery is a harmonious combination ... however, cats are always and everywhere harmonious :)
The ancient Egyptians had a special relationship with cats: they were revered as sacred animals; mummified like humans; depicted in sculpture and frescoes. And the very first cat "portrait" was written by the Egyptians.
For a long time it was believed that the Egyptians tamed cats. However, in 2004, a burial site dating back to 9500 BC was discovered in Cyprus. e., in which a cat was found together with a man. A wild beast would hardly have been put in a grave. It turned out that cats lived with people long before they appeared in Egypt. The Middle East began to be considered the birthplace of domestic cats, and Egypt was forgotten for some time. But not for long: in 2008, a burial was opened in southern Egypt, in which six cats were found - a male, a female and four kittens. Although this burial was younger than the Cypriot one (about 6000 years), it became clear that cats were known in Egypt much earlier than was thought until recently.
It is known that the ancestor of the domestic cat was the steppe cat Felis silvestris lybica - it still lives in the steppe, desert and partly mountainous regions of Africa, Western, Central and Central Asia, in Northern India, Transcaucasia and Kazakhstan. In 2007, it was possible to establish that all modern cats descended from him.
Seafarers brought the first cats to Rus' in the pre-Christian era. Exotic animals were a valuable commodity: the cost of a cat until the 15th century was comparable to the value of a healthy arable animal - an ox.
Until recently it was believed that this alkaline steppe was formed by the clear cutting of huge forests in the Middle Ages, followed by measures to control the course of the Tisza River, allegedly resulting in the soil's current structure and pH. However, Hortobágy is much older, with alkalinization estimated to have started ten thousand years ago, when the Tisza first found its way through the Great Hungarian Plain, cutting off many streams from their sources in the Northern Mountains. The formation was finished by grazing animals and wild horses during the Ice Age, followed by domesticated animals.

Sesame Knot Rolls
Challah Recipe (Marylyn Pisseri)
1 cup warm water
1/2 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 1/2 teaspoons salt
2 eggs, room temperature
4 cups bread flour
2 1/4 teaspoons bread machine yeast
1 egg, beaten
1 tablespoon water
2 Tbsp powdered sugar
Place warm water, sugar, honey, vegetable oil, salt, 2 eggs, flour and yeast in the pan of the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select Dough cycle; press Start.
After the machine is done, take the dough out, and place it on a very lightly floured board, punch the dough down, and let rest for 5 minutes.
For challahs: Divide the dough in half. Then divide into 3 equal pieces, roll into ropes about 12 to 14 inches, and braid into a loaf. Do the same with the remaining other half. Gently put the loaves on a greased cookie sheet, mist with water, cover loosely with plastic wrap, and let rise for 1 to 1 1/2 hours in a warm, draft free place, until double in size.
For rolls: Divide dough into 12 rolls. Shape into long pieces and make a knot. Let rise for at least an hour.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a small bowl, beat together 1 egg, 1 tablespoon water and 2 Tbsps powdered sugar.
Brush risen loaves with egg mixture. Bake in preheated oven for about 20 to 25 minutes.
We had been away for a while, and when we came back to our old country house, I saw this “spot” of about 1 cm² outside on the kitchen window. I thought a young bird had crashed and made this, but later noticed that the spot had changed shape. Taking a better look revealed that the spot was actually many small spider babies. Sometimes close in a bunch, later more spread, then close again. I let them live there until one day the spot was gone, and now I have hundreds of small spiders around my house, I guess :-)

The building on the centre of the photograph is the Custom House.
One of the most recognisable buildings in King's Lynn, the Custom House was built by Henry Bell in 1683 as a merchants' exchange. The building was used as a customs house from the 18th century until 1989. The building originally had an open arcade on the ground floor, supported by Doric columns, which is now filled in. The Custom House was the first Classical building to be built in King's Lynn.

A fairly warm October is ending, and we can feel the chill of November approaching. These little asters or Michaelmas daisies in Erba Park have been able to hold on until now, but their color has lost its summer brightness, and they are fading fast. The annual cycle moves on . . . Similar shots with a 35mm prime didn't turn out quite as well, so here's one with the kit zoom (on my backup camera). [DSC06261_lr_2000]

The Abbey of St. Jean des Vignes was a monastery of Augustinian canons in Soissons, France, southwest of the city center. Only ruins remain, of which the west facade remains one of the more outstanding examples of architecture in the town. It is a listed historic monument.
The abbey was founded on St. John's hill in 1076 by Hughes Le Blanc as a community of Augustinian canons.
Initially built in Romanesque style, the initial buildings were replaced at the end of the 12th century by those extant today. The west facade was begun in the 12th century, but not finished until the 16th. The refectory and cellar date from the 13th century, parts of the cloisters from the end of the 13th century, while other parts are from the 16th century, as is the abbot's lodging.
When the abbey was suppressed during the French Revolution the premises were put to use for military purposes, and an arsenal was added.
The site was acquired by the town of Soissons in the 1970s and the remaining buildings are now occupied by educational and heritage-related organizations.

November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.
With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.
The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.
~ Elizabeth Coatsworth
Last week we got about 60cm of snow and today we got about 10-15cm of ice and sleet (which is like ten times worse than 1 meter of snow). So New England winter is in full swing and I am looking forward for summer 2022 and the day I am going to fly to Greece. Until that day though, I can think about that by looking at photos from last summer. This is the Bouza lighthouse in Aegina, one of my favorite places on the island. Errected in 1881, it's only 9meters tall but still one of the island's most famous landmarks. It sits at the island's westernost spot right next to the church of Saint Apostles. A beautiful place to relax and enjoy the sunset as the ferries pass by. It feels like the lighthouse is providing a shining path to them.

Thievery Corporation - The Shining Path
When I was a child, we did not have a TV until I was six years old and my parents would spend the evenings reading and listening to the radio. It seemed to me highly desirable to read books, thus I became an avid reader and I read all the children books in our small community library twice over. When I was eleven years old and there were no new books available, I moved on to read my parents' books and I remember the first books that I read were the books of Gwen Bristow. Certainly, I did not understand everything at that age, but I loved them so much, that I read her books over the years many times again, first in German then in English, and still love them. What you see here are some of those old books from my parents' book shelves.

Spending the day at the mall to find the chuck to match your son: Priceless.
Until this moment I never was able to have a good look on roes, let alone to see their off-spring. I was informed there was a field with buckwheat where they gathered regularly.
So I went to that place and stayed there for a few hours, but nothing there.
Then I walked back to my car, and suddenly I saw a doe with two fawn in the distance, and I sneaked towards them. I was extremely lucky, they were standing on a little hill, not in the least worried by my presence. After a while the two fawns started even playing, running around and chasing each other.
This is the shot I like best from a large series of shots.

Off the water and back to the woods to soak up some of the remaining color which is holding fairly well, especially given the strong winds we've had the last few days. I went out specifically to take a bunch of photos to upload into my "new friend," with the single and not unrealistic (I thought) hope of being able to find them...which I did, but not until after numerous wrong guesses as to where I thought they seemingly should be...like "Pictures."
By the way, I appreciate your support and tips re: my new desk top (not a laptop as some seem to have guessed), and it progresses slowly. I really don't use a computer for much other than my photos so I haven't even begun to tap the capabilities of this one...and am uncertain as to whether I will even try or not. What I would like to find is the 90% of my photos which did not appear with the others when I transferred them from the flash drive to the new computer. 10% are in fancy new folders...the rest unpleasantly invisible. Everything sees very hit and miss...mostly miss for now causing me to simply walk away from the computer and find other occupations. My learning curve and patience have both suffered with old age.

until you make it. White Christmas is one of the dreams most of us have since their early childhood. As in previous years my home area East Westphalia enjoys a green Christmas time and we have to look back several years to remember significant snowfalls. So please forgive me to fake a little bit by posting an older picture with snow, just to show the younger ones that there was a time with real Winter. Enjoy your holidays.
