I'm super excited to announce my next travel adventure! AUSTRALIA!!!
Jenn and I have been planning this trip for a couple of weeks now and I'm excited to finally announce it. Will be visiting Sydney and Cairns on our adventure with plenty of picture taking along the way! I'm so stoked!
We will have limited internet access on this trip so I'm not sure how much updating i'll do, but I'll try to check in when I can. To be honest I'm just excited to unplug for a couple weeks and get away from a computer screen and explore this new part of the world.

My wife and I decided that the best way to unplug from our lives was to get on a boat and get as far away as we can! We got to enjoy to sights and sounds that our southern country of Mexico had to offer aboard the Carnival Fantasy Cruise liner. And, I got to try my hand in street photography using vintage lenses. Honestly one of the best vacations to date, and we are looking forward to going back!

Scientists control mice brains by remote control 31 July 2015 23:26 (Last updated 31 July 2015 23:29) New study showcases tiny, floating implant that improves understanding of the mind By Barry Eitel SAN FRANCISCO In a groundbreaking new breakthrough for neuroscience, scientists were able to control the movement of mice via remote control. Scientists created a minuscule remote-controlled brain implant that can be used to inject drugs directly into tissues as well as help neuroscientists understand neurons located deep within the brain. The results of the study, partially funded by the National Institutes of Health and conducted by researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and the University of Illinois were published in the journal Cell. The experiment might seems straight out of a science fiction novel but the results actually have important implications for the future of medicine, especially when it comes to the brain. Researchers believe the study could help in the treatment of pain, depression, addiction and other afflictions, which is one reason the NIH opted to fund it. “It unplugs a world of possibilities for scientists to learn how brain circuits work in a more natural setting,” said the study’s senior author Michael R. Bruchas, Ph.D., associate professor of anesthesiology and neurobiology at Washington University. The “optofludic” -- technology that combines fluid delivery with light -- implant designed by scientists is made of soft material and remarkably miniscule -- it measures only a tenth of the diameter of a human hair. The experimental, next-generation implant can deliver drugs and emit light at the same time. “The innovation here is they combine both technologies in one device,” Dr. James Gnadt, program director at the NIH’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, said in an interview with Anadolu Agency. By flashing lights and delivering microscopic amounts of different drugs, scientists were able to control the movement of lab animals with the press of a button on a wireless control several feet away. The mice were genetically engineered so that their neurons would respond to the light emitted by the implant; therefore, Gnadt said, the lights in the device wouldn’t work in a normal mouse. The tiny size of the implant allows researchers to bury deeper into tissues than ever before. The implant is much thinner than the tubes doctors currently use to deliver drugs, which damage more sensitive tissue. “We used powerful nano-manufacturing strategies to fabricate an implant that lets us penetrate deep inside the brain with minimal damage,” according to co-senior author John A. Rogers, Ph.D., of UIUC. “Ultra-miniaturized devices like this have tremendous potential for science and medicine.” Neuroscientists used the implant to specifically look at brain circuits that are involved in stress, depression, addiction, and pain. In most previous experiments looking at similar neurons, scientists have to resort to damaging surgery and bulking devices that impede the natural movement of animals and affect their overall brain activity. The optofludic implant is far less intrusive, and thus far more valuable for future research. “Making them implementable opens up a whole arena of progress,” Gnadt said. In designing the implant, scientists looked toward Silicon Valley. The implant was manufactured using techniques similar to how microchips are built and has the capability to carry four different drugs. It also carries four diodes to emit light. “We tried at least 30 different prototypes before one finally worked,” noted researcher Jordan G. McCall, Ph.D. The study began before President Barack Obama unveiled the White House’s Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative to better understand the human brain, which is still one of the most mysterious frontiers of medicine. There are strong connections between the scientists and research revealed in this study, and the national project. "This is research at the level of discovery -- how the brain works,” Gnadt continued. “Depression is thought to be a misbalance of chemicals of the brain -- if you knew the balance of the chemicals, you could bring them back into balance." Much of the hype around the study has used somewhat loaded terms like “mind control,” but Gnadt explains that using an implant like the one in the study isn’t really summer blockbuster territory. “The idea that you could control someone’s thoughts with this is pretty far from reality,” he said. While undoubtedly a breakthrough, these implants are fairly simple, Gnadt noted. He likened the implant to a pacemaker used to control heart arrhythmias. The devices in the study can turn on a light or deliver a tiny reservoir of drugs, but couldn’t take over a person’s mind. As for the ethics of a brain implant, Gnadt pointed out that one component of Obama’s Brain initiative is to open up an office that specifically deals with the moral quandaries of neuroscience. And any sort of medical implant for the brain would face a robust regulatory environment including a slew of reviews and trials. “The importance of this is the micro-engineering,” Gnadt said, “our being able to bring really cutting edge engineering and miniaturize it to the point where we can use it fairly non-invasive ways in animals to find how out the brain works.” “The impacts of this might be two years away or 20 years away,” Gnadt added, claiming that the experiments marriage of biology and engineering to better understand the basics of the brain was “really cool”. There was a hen walking around in front of him and she was rather impassive about this display. I was rather impressed though....wonder what that makes me?
Sassy and I got a play station today with one of those "move around while you play the game" attachments.
Haven't used that yet but tonight we used our new playstation to watch a streaming movie from Netflix. All the exercise we got was from moving the popcorn, from the bowl, to our face. Enjoyed the movie too.
High tec tribulations was the fair for the afternoon. I got the new playstation gadget all hooked up just fine and then I had to jump through some "online" hoops setting it up and updating. Well in the middle of that, I get a pop up window that exclaimed there was no internet connection. Went into the office to check out the modem, all the lights were blinkin'. I tried to log on to the world wide web with my computer. Sure enough no connection. Damn if my computer didn't freeze up. Just the twirly thing going round and round and nothing else worked. So I hit the old power button to shut her down. Then after its off, I try to boot it up..... What the hell? It won't boot up! Now I'm really frustrated cause now my computer with all my photography software is on the fritz. I was just trying to get a friggin' playstation in the other room to work all copasetic. Still no internet connection. Reset the modem.....after two tries I finally have a internet connection on my other crappy computer. Still can't get my "divine obsession" computer to boot up. Crap!
I unplug all the wires, external hard drives etc, etc, drag it out to the dining room table, get out the screwdriver, and open it up. Surgery. A little dusty in there. I go out to the garage fire up the compressor, go back into the dining room, grab my "precious patient" and out to garage we go for a blow job good blowing out with compressed air. I am quite skeptical about the triumph of such a treatment, but I'm desperate, and such an action is a perfect example of my technical prowess. After blowing enough dust into the air to get me coughing, I head back into the house with my computer.
I put the cover back on in the dining room and then carry it back into the office where I hook up the power cord and the monitor. I push the "power up" button and......Hallelujah! It works!
The rear speaker jack doesn't work now but I can plug my speakers into the one in the front and they work fine. I can live with that for now. After all that I finally made it back out to finish setting up our new playstation.
Moral of the story......there ain't nothing a good...........blowing off with compressed air can't fix. Turn up the Barry White. :)

As the file name says and this was the last Bristol "Frightener" (so called because the APU socket was under the aircraft and close to the engines, so some intrepid member of the ground crew had to crawl under the aircraft to unplug it!) to fly, for Hawkair, till not very many years before I took this photo of the aircraft, on display at the Reynolds museum in Wetaskwin. They used it on support missions to remote mines in Canada. I only ever saw one Freighter when the aircraft was in service and that was EI-APC of Aer Turas (both of blessed memory) clattering out of Manchester on a summer evening back in 1971 or 1972-unforgettable. I did however see two Superfreighters in service (tho in hangars) and those were G-APAU and G-APAV of Midlands Air Cargo, at Coventry in 1972 or 1973, again, all of blessed memory and I so regret now not having photographed them then. Such a characterful aircraft and so sad that no Superfreighters survive, tho quite a few Freighters do. And here is the link to my only other photo of a Freighter, at Yellowknife in Canada:

After months of preparation and anticipation, a group of Canadian educators have gathered in Toronto for the start of an off-the-grid get-together to "connect, and go deeper," at Unplug'd: Canadian Education Summit 2011.
Soon to depart the connected environs of Toronto's Westin Harbour Castle hotel for the sure-to-be-memorable Northern Edge Algonquin retreat, we look forward for the opportunity to connect in an Unplug'd fashion.
This fancy, pops-up-from-your-desk power bar at the Westin will be the last electronic plugging-in for the next while, but the connections will still be made in the days to come.

This is two photos stitched together. The dryer burned my hand it was so hot. Tomorrow I'm going to unplug the dryer before I work on it, and see if I can take the back panel off and find a bird nest or some other stuff that is blocking things. If I can't fix it that way, then I guess I'll have to hire a repairman.
Normally I like birds, but not when they present a danger to me and my home.
The docking station is one of these, which lets you easily plug and unplug 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives into USB 2.0 without having to open an external case.
So I tried holding the magnifying glass over the CD. I had to abandon my final attempt to remove my glasses and hold them there too for despite 2 hands and 10 fingers it wasn't sufficient to work the camera as well. I wished I could unplug a finger or two and plug it to a different position or even put it on a flex to use.
When I saw this on the computer I wished I'd been able to blow a pretty bubble to include in the picture. Just too complicated though.

While hiking, I have been seeing a growing number of people taking only a brief view of the surroundings and then burying themselves in their electronic devices. This ongoing project highlights the need to re-examine our need to unplug and just enjoy the beauty of this world.

What with cellphones, GPS, etc., we are overloading the 3-gang cigarette lighter extension plug-in we had. .........in addition. the 3-gang thing makes for a mess of wires. And, when we set up, we had0 to be sure to unplug the 3-gang thing as the lighter socket is always powered and we didn't want to drain the battery. That puts a mass of wires on the floor.
I tapped into the cigarette lighter wires to the illuminated push-button switch. When the button is pressed, it powers the three additional 12v outlets. The button is illuminated when ON, easy to remember to push to turn OFF.
*** Since this photo, I have modified this setup to bring the lower edge of this little panel forward. As it was, some of our 12v plugs tended to slip out a bit. That problem was cured with the placement a 1.5-inch spacer behind the two lower screws.
Thinking I'd missed their swim today with the amount of Greylag and Canada Geese all over the East Lake I decide to come down to the end of East Lake where the farm is. Here I see large groups on water and groups on land in different places. There are more photos but we about to unplug for National Unplugging Day so I have to stop until Monday for a moment.
