Driving around to see houses lit up in holiday lights is a time-honored tradition in many families. The twinkle of hundreds of thousands of tiny lights brings out the child in all of us.

If you’re looking for more than just your average neighborhood light display this year, then you’ve come to the right place. We have scoured the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex for the most awe-inducing spectacles in 2017! Grab your coat and gloves, or if it is a typical North Texas Christmas, a light fleece, and venture out to these family-friendly exhibits!

Historic Grapevine Light Displays

There’s a reason Grapevine is considered the “Christmas Capital of Texas.” With three different nights dedicated to decking the halls, there’s no reason to miss out on the excitement. While the Christmas tree at City Hall is lit just after Thanksgiving, there’s still time to catch the Parade of Lights and the Twinkle Light Boat Parade.

The Parade of Lights in is the largest lighted Christmas parade in North Texas, and will feature more than 100 lighted floats and marching bands. If that isn’t enough, head to Lake Grapevine to watch boats decked out in holiday décor, and a lights parade from the Twin Coves Marina to Silver Lake Marina. Each event is free and open to the public.

Sparkling Nights in Addison

Walk off those extra holiday pounds by wandering around the Vitruvian Park’s holiday spectacle in Addison. Twelve acres of the park have been decorated with twinkling lights that are just begging to be explored. Weekends in December will also feature food trucks, live music, and holiday shopping villages. Bring the kids for free pictures with Santa, and to visit with the local police and fire department, too!

Gift of Lights in Fort Worth

Ever dream of hitting the Texas Motor Speedway? Well, here’s your opportunity! Cruise around the raceway through the Gift of Lights, and experience over 150 new light displays this year. At the end of the tour, explore Santa’s Village for family-friendly activities, including photos with Santa. Admission is $25 per car; however, if you bring an unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots, you receive a $5 discount. The event benefits multiple local charities, and is open daily from 6pm-10pm.

Christmas in the Square – Frisco

Head to Frisco Square to experience the largest choreographed holiday lights and music display in North Texas. Running daily from 6pm-10pm, visitors can bask in the glow of over 175,000 lights on display. To put this number in perspective, it takes over 11.5 miles of wiring and 8 miles of extension cords to pull off this show. If you’re longing for a white Christmas, you can even experience “snow flurries” every fifteen minutes in the Square on Fridays and Saturdays. And, finally, test your skating skills on the outdoor rink!

Prairie Lights – Grand Prairie

Drive through more than four MILLION lights sets along a two-mile path at the Lynn Creek Park on Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie. Halfway through the drive, hop out of the car to wander around the Holiday Village that features food, gifts, a snow maze and lighted forest.

After enjoying the stopover, you get back in the car to experience the grand finale of the display, including an animated light tunnel. Bring the kids to snap a photo with Santa as well. Purchase tickets online to save $5 off admission per vehicle.

The North Texas region is full of holiday cheer this year! No matter where you live in the metroplex, there is a holiday light spectacular nearby. Didn’t see one of your favorites on our list? Leave us a comment and tell us where else we should check out!

Rohit Shetty has Temper rights but his version won’t be a remake

Ranveer Singh is an energetic actor who has grown up on masala Hindi films. He aspires to do more of such films. On the other hand, Rohit Shetty is a master of commercial Bollywood films. Both came together last year for the ad campaign of ‘Ching’s Secret’, whose brand ambassador is Ranveer. Their association was great and the camaraderie that they shared during media appearances made everyone wonder if they’d work together. Soon enough, Rohit Shetty revealed that he’ll be doing a film with Ranveer Singh.

Later, reports that Rohit Shetty would remake the hit Telugu film Temper and that it’ll feature Ranveer Singh reprising the role of Junior NTR. However, Rohit Shetty has now revealed that while he has bought the rights of Temper, the film that he is going to direct is not exactly a remake. He clarified that he has taken only four-five scenes from Temper’s original version but to avoid any problems, he thought that it’s better to buy the rights. He also reminded that he did something similar with his hit 2011 film, Singham. His version was drastically different from the original version and yet, he obtained the rights.

Rohit Shetty however isn’t bothered that there will be comparisons between his version of Temper and the original flick and he explains why. Firstly, he argues that there’s no film in today’s times that releases without any controversies or comparisons. Secondly, he has had an experience in this regard with Singham. He in fact says that there were hardly any comparisons between the original and his film.

Lastly, he rubbishes reports that Kajal Aggarwal has been signed for this film. Rohit Shetty revealed that he is yet to write the final draft and that the female protagonist’s part hasn’t shaped up yet. He will announce the lead only in December 2017 or January 2018. Temper is expected to go on floors in mid-2018.

Before Temper, Rohit Shetty is working on Golmaal Again, which is on floors right now. It is the fourth part of the blockbuster Golmaal franchise and stars Ajay Devgn, Parineeti Chopra, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Kunal Kemmu and Tabu. It releases on Diwali this year.

Mark Zuckerberg will stop at nothing until every individual is on Facebook — or so it seems.

According to multiple reports, he’s looking into ways to reel the teens back into his flagship social media platform. They’ve become distracted — even engulfed — in newer, hotter apps like Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok. He’s simply not having that.

Sources close to Facebook say Zuckerberg has spent months building what’s being called LOL. The specialty feed is expected to focus on meme-like shares, funny videos and other short, GIF-like clips. Categories are to include “Animals,” “Fails,” “Pranks” and a dedicated “For You” feed.

TechCrunch has the scoop on LOL. Apparently 100 high school students have already been using LOL. Of course, they signed non-disclosure agreements and had their parents sign for them.

Speaking to TechCrunch, an inside source calls the new LOL “cringey,” in that it feels like an attempt for Facebook to be cool and hip with the kids. Well, that’s exactly what it’s trying to do, so that makes perfect sense.

We’ll have wait and see if LOL actually rolls out to its Facebook users.

A Senate Committee on Foreign Relations subcommittee met with a panel of experts on Wednesday to discuss a response to “international predatory economic practices.” While the broad terminology was surely meant to include a broad range of topics, one country was on everyone’s mind: China.

Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.) opened the event by stating his belief that U.S. national security lies largely in the security of our economy. While many countries engage in predatory economic practices, China’s practices are unique in “scope, nature, severity, and consequences.”

China is seeking to advance its Made in China 2025 plan by exploiting joint ventures and acquiring foreign enterprises through government subsidiaries, according to witness testimony from Dr. Robert Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, and Michael Wessel, a member of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission .

“China is in its own league,” wrote Atkinson in his prepared statement, “fielding predatory economic and trade policies and practices.”

Young rattled off ways China exploits foreign businesses when granting access to its market, including forced technology transfer, forced local production, theft of intellectual property, and manipulation of technology standards. “And that’s not a comprehensive list!” Young punctuated.

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) added that American businesses have been “mesmerized” by the Chinese consumer market, but failed to respond to aggressive and often illegal Chinese methods that negate any benefits.

The brunt of Chinese malpractice has been felt most by American workers. The unfair economic aggression from China has driven down labor value, pushed jobs overseas, and deprived the American people of their economic security, speakers said.

“We cannot allow other nations to ignore labor and environmental standards in an attempt to undermine our markets and gain competitive advantage,” said Kimberly Glas of the BlueGreen Alliance.

Glas gave a handful of examples of Chinese recklessness in manufacturing that led to severe ecosystem pollution, including the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Her organization estimates that if the bridge had been built with American steel, 180,000 tons of carbon emissions could have been averted (along with a number of other problems).

Atkinson brought up the “Chinese playbook,” an elegantly simple way to describe China’s trade policy boiled down to four parts. First, China wants to be globally competitive, if not dominant in virtually all technologies. But because China lacks the capability to rise to this dominance organically any time soon, its strategy is focused on stealing, coercing, or buying this technology (that’s step 2).

Once Chinese enterprises get hold of often illegally acquired technology, those entities receive grand subsidies, protections, and benefits from the Chinese government.

The final step is export subsidies and benefits to overtake global markets and industries. The World Trade Organization was never built to handle economies that don’t play by the rules, and it still isn’t equipped to preside over a nation like China. Atkinson called for drastic reform, spearheaded by the United States to combat China on a global scale. Stopping IP theft, dramatic funding reduction to China from the World Bank, and creating a special regime tasked with handling Chinese investment were all on the agenda.

The panel agreed that Congress currently has the tools to defend the U.S. and its economy from Chinese intervention. The Section 301 tariffs were a good start, but they could have been implemented as early as eight years ago. The panel called for heavier use of trade act sections and self-initiated cases to show the public they’re acting.

All speakers at the event were united in stating that when the playing field is level, the United States wins. But there are rule breakers like China out there, and it’s our responsibility to protect our own national economy and security.

A hopeful attendee of Defqon 1 recently pled guilty after trying to smuggle 114 capsules of MDMA into the music festival. She wasn’t let past the front gate when drug dogs sniffed her out and authorities found her in possession of drugs — which were stuffed inside of a condom, hidden in her underwear.

It was 20-year-old Tracy Nguyen of Sydney, Australia. As the report goes, she became “erratic” around police and authorities became suspicious of her. After being targeted by drug dogs, she was stripped searched and that’s when authorities found the 114 capsules. She was taken into custody.

“Gurl would you be able to get it off someone else inside,” an incriminating text of Nguyen’s read. “I’m alrdy bringing 12.34g. I’m scared coz its my first time for dq. But ive done a few indoors before. And everyone says dq has 30 dogs and 100 polices.”

The contact in her phone reportedly responded, “There are like 2-3 dogs max. But yes there’s heaps of cops.”

Defqon 1 took place in September 2018. Months later, Nguyen’s guilty plea was heard. Her sentencing is set for March.

Comb eBay for the things of our childhoods that are no longer in production. The Waste Land

I. The Burial of the Dead

April is the cruellest month, breeding

Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing

Memory and desire, stirring

Dull roots with spring rain.

Winter kept us warm, covering

Earth in forgetful snow, feeding

A little life with dried tubers.

Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee

With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade,

And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten,

And drank coffee, and talked for an hour.

Bin gar keine Russin, stamm’ aus Litauen, echt deutsch.

And when we were children, staying at the arch-duke’s,

My cousin’s, he took me out on a sled,

And I was frightened. He said, Marie,

Marie, hold on tight. And down we went.

In the mountains, there you feel free.

Cool Gardens Landscaping Ltd/Houzz

One of the great joys of owning a home is having the space to entertain. That’s why many home shoppers pine over houses with a great backyard, picturing themselves putting in a dining table, a barbecue, and maybe some raised flower beds.

But why stop there? Recent trends show that to many homeowners, “outdoor living” means more than just setting up a GrillMaster; the ideal outdoor space now looks like an extension of your interior. In fact, a new report from Houzz found that 88% of homeowners taking on landscaping projects upgrade outdoor living elements such as furniture and heating features that make spending time outside more comfortable. In February and March, the home remodeling and design website surveyed more than 750 U.S. homeowners using Houzz who are planning, are in the midst of, or recently completed a landscaping project.

“We’ve continued to see homeowners put greater priority on developing a personalized outdoor living environment,” says Matthew Breyer, president and lead designer for Breyer Construction & Landscape. “No longer are we simply ‘building boxes,’ but rather, we’re working as designers to help flesh out how our clients anticipate living in these spaces, and where their priorities are.”

Landscape architect Drew Langston agrees that homeowners are focused on outdoor living. In the past two years, Langston has quadrupled the amount of “landscape master plans” he’s working on at any given time. These include pools, patios, walls, fire pits, and extensive landscaping—and his business is based in chilly Buffalo, NY!

Even in the Northeast, where warm weather isn’t as consistent as in other parts of the country, he says people are still jumping at the chance to improve their backyards.

Trending features for the ultimate outdoor living area

Homeowners looking to spend more time living and entertaining in their backyards are actually outfitting them with decor pieces we’re used to seeing inside. For 43% of respondents, that means lounge furniture, while 34% bring in dining furniture. Other hot outdoor furnishings include string lights, at 35%; benches, at 27%; ceiling fans, at 15%; and rugs, at 14%—all of which make the space look like a cohesive room.

Heating sources such as fire pits are also popular, with nearly 40% of respondents saying they installed, or are thinking of installing, one. Outdoor heating overall is valuable as it can extend the season for outdoor entertaining.

Of course, tricking out your backyard in 2018 also means bringing in some shiny new devices such as TVs, chosen by 59% of respondents; wireless speakers, at 42%; and wired charging hubs, at 11%. Breyer also mentions that accessories such as fans and LED lighting have taken priority among clients.

“We have been working with a number of customers that have amazing lighting, full outdoor sound systems, and other outdoor amenities, all that work in conjunction with the indoor sound systems,” says Patrick Harders, a contractor in Northern Virginia specializing in outdoor lighting. “These allow people to entertain as if they are in their own private resort.”

Speaking of privacy, it’s also one of the biggest requests from homeowners undergoing a landscaping project.

“Due to the increase in time spent entertaining outdoors, people are realizing just how close the neighbors are. We do more construction with mini pergolas, decorative feature walls, outdoor blinds, and tiered landscaping to address these concerns,” says Breyer. Privacy fences and noise-canceling barriers are also popular choices for folks who don’t want to end the party at 10 p.m.

How much are people spending?

Outdoor renovations can be expensive, but it’s a cost that a majority of homeowners are willing to pay. According to the survey, 56% of homeowners spent more than $10,000 on their outdoor renovations. Almost a third, 32%, reportedly spent less than $5,000.

“In my experience, the average landscape (planting and beds only) is about $3,500 to $5,000, and the average project involving hardscaping (walls, patios, fire pits) as well is about $15,000,” Langston says. “This being said, we execute several jobs a year between $25,000 and $50,000, and usually one to three jobs a year that can be between $80,000 and $100,000. I truly believe an enjoyable landscape is achievable at any budget.”

Photo by MTLA- Mark Tessier Landscape Architecture

Why homeowners are shifting their focus outdoors

The biggest reason for starting a landscaping project is to improve elements of the outdoor space that have deteriorated. But once those updates are made, 67% of homeowners said they spend more time outside once they completed a landscaping project, with 62% of those spending their time relaxing and 44% gardening. So when it comes down to it, people just want to have an outdoor place to unwind that’s as comfortable, accommodating, and private as their living or dining room, no matter if they live in Boca Raton, FL, or Buffalo.

“In Western New York we only have a few months of great weather that we can actually be outside,” says Langston. “People want to spend more money to create an amazing space outdoors so they can enjoy the nice weather as much as possible.”

SHOCKING: Sona Mohapatra slams Kangana Ranaut’s interviews about her relationship with Hrithik Roshan a publicity gimmick

Kangana Ranaut, who is busy with the promotions of her upcoming film Simran, recently opened up about her infamous legal spat with her alleged former boyfriend, Hrithik Roshan. Kangana Ranaut opened up about her affair, legal spat and more on Rajat Sharma’s Aap Ki Adalat and other shows. While many are seeing it as a courageous move, others have termed it as a promotional gimmick.

For singer Sona Mohapatra, this whole reopening of Hrithik Roshan vs Kangana Ranaut seems like a circus and more like a PR stunt for her upcoming film. Sona addressed the entire issue about Kangana’s recent openness in her recent Facebook post. She wrote, “Dear Kangana, I have always cheered loudly, in private & in public for you. Long, long before you turned queen et all but your current run across the airwaves regurgitating personal details of your love life over & over again, washing dirty linen in public & more so as part of a professional PR campaign before your film release is in bad taste. No two ways about it.”

Sona Mohapatra also questioned Kangana Ranaut’s feminist stand and termed it as a big dis-service to the cause of feminism & fair play. She added, “Also, it does a big dis-service to the cause of feminism & fair play. Wish you well & wish you would rise above this muck & make your point through actions & your work. Your success doesn’t need this tabloid trail. Your well thought out & superbly worded open letters of the past, fearless interviews addressing larger issues, taking a stand, taking legal recourse are welcome. The current ‘circus’, not. This is just another opinion in the public domain from one working woman to another, from the heart & on an impulse. There is no PR machinery or team guiding me here.”

Sona further wrote, “I do believe that there are plenty of feminists in the opposite gender. Men who cheer the cause of outspoken, feisty, fierce & hard working women like you & me. Hey guys! Man. THANK YOU so much for the overwhelming response on the reveal of the Small World room yesterday! (If you haven’t seen it yet check it out here!)

You know I try to post tutorials for everything that I do but friends, a tutorial for this wall treatment just isn’t happening. Not because I don’t think that you can do it, but because I think you TOTALLY CAN!! Let me explain.

This room started off as a rough (and I mean rough) sketch. There were no measurements or angles or exactness. I knew the general size and the general shape and that was good enough for me. (Court was a little concerned when I pulled out my drawing)

I started off by measuring and marking the size for each building on the wall with tape. Then we got to work ripping pieces of 1/2″ plywood down and started attaching them to the wall (just make sure when you’re doing this that you’re hitting at least one stud!)

I also used 1×2’s to add detail and dimension. If you’ve ever seen Small World you know that dimension is of most critical importance, everything got layers.

Once the build out was done it was time to pull it all together. This is where I hit a creative roadblock (if you follow my instastories you were a part of this emotional and frustrating part!)

The detail was pretty much done and it was time to start adding wallpaper and paint. The biggest issue that I kept running into is that it was going very juvenile really quickly. I know how that sounds. This is a kids room, I’m using It’s A Small World as inspo. DUH of course its juvenile. But the dilemma is that my daughter is 9 and so I wanted the room to feel more old kid and not nursery. A good dose of whimsical and modern.

I started painting and almost immediately hated it. See I get this feeling in my gut and I know if I’m on the right track or not. It was just too busy with the wood and the wallpaper (even though the paper is white) and the patterns. Again, I know how this sounds. How is it not supposed to be busy?! It just felt like mixing the shapes and the colors and the elevations was just too much.

Oh and did I mention that one of the best things about this type of work is having hard deadlines, and I had to have this room ready for pictures the next day. Not a problem.

So I did what any rational person that hated what was happening would do. I started painting over everything. As I was doing this I was feeling SO conflicted. I love the natural wood, but with the floors and the dresser and the whole vibe I was going for they couldn’t stay natural.

After I had painted everything white I was so gut sick. It just wasn’t working! And now I couldn’t go back (plywood doesn’t sand well). I needed to take a break and walk away from the situation.

Have you ever listened to Elizabeth Gilbert’s TED talk about creative genius? It’s SO AWESOME. Go listen to it right now! For me, creativity is spiritual. Not in a religious sort of way, but in a there-is-something-bigger-that-endows-me-with-ideas sort of way. So I left the Merc, parked my car and started to meditate and pray. It was after about 30 minutes of wrestling with my genius (have you listen to the talk yet?!) that I got the distinct impression that I needed to think bigger than the buildings. When I think of my daughter I see her potenitial as such a light. She literally radiates. So I was picturing her sitting in her bed and the idea of doing these rainbow beams came to my mind, because that is just who she is. As soon as I saw it I knew it was exactly what the space needed.

I started measuring and marking the stripes by using masonry line and nails. (You can see the pink masonry line in the picture below, see how it all meets at one central point?)

Then I got to painting. I used sample pots (if youre doing an accent wall with sections of color, 9 times out of 10 you can get away with testers and don’t need to buy full size cans.) It will save you so much money!!

And then voila! we ended up with this!

Check out the video below to see the whole process play out in a time-lapse!!

Cape Cod is in the process of slowly and safely reopening in the wake of the Corona Virus pandemic. It may not be “business as usual”, but there certainly are plenty of reasons to make Cape Cod your destination for a socially distant and fun family vacation. With less tourists than normal, now is the perfect time to visit to socially distance yourself away from others and bring your family closer together.

Dining

If your family is looking to eat out during your stay, fortunately there still are many options to chose from. Main Street Hyannis has erected concrete barriers that line the road, making room for outdoor seating for restaurants. Though indoor seating is currently permitted on Cape Cod, an extended outdoor seating accomodation is provided out of respect for those who chose to take stricter precautionary measures. Less than 2 miles away from the Bayside Resort, Main Street Hyannis offers a wide selection of 49 restaurants that range from seafood to fine dining, bars, and casual gourmet. Further, located right in Yarmouth, we recommend your family to visit restaurants such as the Skipper or Captain Parkers, who have fantastic water views in their outdoor seating areas. There’s no better place to enjoy seafood than Cape Cod, and not even the pandemic can stop that! Finally, because of the limited seating capacity due to social distancing guidelines, we encourage you to call ahead and make a reservation if possible.

Take a Hike!

A fantastic way to distance yourself from others is to take a hike, or a bike! Our first recommendation for hikes are rail trails. First, the Shining Sea Rail Trail stretches 10.7 miles, but has various intervals to park at to customize the length of your journey. The flat paved trail passes through Chapoquoit Beach, Sippewissett Salt Marsh, cranberry bogs, and finishes at historic Woods Hole. Other flat and paved rail trails include the Cape Cod Canal and the Cape Cod Rail Trail– both are also great places to get some fresh air on safe, paved ground. Next, we also recommend you check out nature trails! There has never been a better time to go outside and distance yourself from others. Additionally, with the limited tourism to Cape Cod this summer, we encourage you to take this rare opportunity to see the Cape untouched by others. Our top picks for nature trails include the White Cedar Swamp trail, Fort Hill Trail, and Sandy Neck Beach. In all three of these trails you will get access to a unique aspect of what makes the Cape so special. More information on Cape Cod nature trails can be found on the National Parks Website.

Go to the Drive In!

We covered this topic previously in our “Best Things to do on Cape Cod” post, and fortunately the argument still holds true! Visiting the Drive In is still one of the most charming and safest activities to do this summer, and will be fun your family won’t want to miss. Enjoy movies found in theaters today at the comfort and distance of your own car. Additionally, with the grand opening of the Yarmouth Drive In, the Bayside Resort is only minutes away from the fun! Tickets are $30 a car, with a max of 4 people. Additional passengers will require a small fee. Tickets can be found at YarmouthDriveIn.com. Further, if you want a more nostalgic experience, visit the Wellfleet Drive In! Parking spots are limited to every other space and a mask must be worn when visiting the snack bar and bathroom. Tickets are 13$ a person and can also be found on their website.

Houzz; Parker House Inc/Houzz

Homes with an open floor plan are all the rage these days. However, if you’re hesitant to start knocking down walls, rest assured, there are many ways to create a sense of space without sacrificing privacy when (and where) you need it.

That’s according to “Open Concept Houses“—a new book by architecture authority Francesc Zamora Mola (author of “150 Best Mini Interior Ideas“). This coffee-table book presents gorgeous open floor plans and the benefits they offer.

“Opening up cramped living spaces can do wonders by freeing up space, allowing more natural light in, and promoting interaction among family members,” Mola points out in his book. And if you love having guests over, all the better: “Open plan houses are homes made for entertaining.”

So if you’re craving more open space, how can you make that happen? Check out these tips from Mola on finding (or fashioning) the perfect open-concept house for you.

1. Knock down walls on the outside

Each living space opens outward.

Mihaly Slocmbe Architects

Of course, the downside to knocking down walls is it eliminates options for privacy. But there is another way: Rather than knocking down a home’s interior partitions, eliminate walls along the exterior instead.

In the abode shown above, Mosa says, “the main living room spills out onto the balcony, the kids’ living room opens into the pool enclosure, and the bedrooms all have doors onto the back garden.”

2. Use your roof

A rooftop can become a dining room.

Craig McMahon Architects

The design of this Texas home (shown above) incorporates the outdoors, making the yard as important as the living space. A big part of that is the use of the roof not simply as a means to keep rain and sun off the inhabitants, but as a dining area where homeowners can truly feel the open air. Of course, not every climate is friendly to outdoor dining year-round, but roof space can also be turned into a part-time hangout.

3. Add skylights to let in more light

Skylights bring in light from above.

Shinberg Levinas

They may be above us, but skylights can play a big role in an open floor plan, as they bring added light and a sense of openness to a room. The skylight was added above the kitchen island in this home, Mosa says, because kitchens tend to draw people in, acting as communal spaces in a home.

4. Add eaves for efficiency

Eaves help with energy efficiency by preventing overheating.

Go Design 21

Windows all around a home certainly add to the open concept, but they can also cost you big-time when it comes to energy efficiency, as sunlight can overheat the home. The solution? This home in California has deep eaves which hang over the windows. They prevent overheating (and help the homeowner hold the line on air-conditioning bills) while still allowing the home to fill up with natural light.

5. Leave beams exposed

Exposed beams open up the space.

Feldman Architecture

Whether it’s adding new construction or renovating the old, the rustic aesthetic of exposed beams can also make a room seem more airy and spacious, ideal for an open floor plan.

In this home, the architects also left the staircase open to create a flow from one floor to the next, connecting an upstairs office space with the children’s room one floor down.

6. Ground your design

The dark floor provides contrast against the white walls.

Yoshida and Zanon

There’s a tendency to use white in open floor plans, as the lack of color keeps the space light. But this home’s open concept is kept grounded with the use of earthy tones in the decor—note the greens and blues on the rug, pillows, and more—plus a deep brown floor that is reminiscent of the earth outside.

“The light color scheme contrasts with the dark flooring, while matte surfaces are juxtaposed to spectacular finishes,” Mosa notes of the decor. “Together, they contribute to the creation of an airy and relaxed atmosphere.”

Dillon Francis‘ produced work will soon be heard on the big screen, but it’s not what you’d expect. It’s far, far, more catchy than any of his songs to date.

In the teaser below, his new song made especially for the The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part is revealed. Dillon Francis, T-Pain, and That Girl Lay Lay collaborate for what’s debatably the catchiest song of all time. It has the kind of appeal of “Let It Go,” the overwhelmingly popular and overplayed song from Frozen.

“This is fucking awesome,” Dillon shares on Twitter. “I got to make the lead song for the new Lego Movie.”

He gives fair warning, “So if it gets stuck inside ur head and you want to punch me in the face I’m sorry.” But, we gotta admit — it’s catchy af. Borderline annoying even. The kind of song that you’ll either love, or love to hate. But, catchy.

Seriously though, nobody would be able to pull off a theme song like this the way Dillon Francis has done. Play at your own risk — because this will be stuck in your head for a while.

Ford and Vaughn Gittin Jr. have teamed up to create a one-off Mustang GT that honors American fighter pilots who flew in the Royal Air Force in WWII known as the Eagle Squadrons. These pilots were actually volunteers that wanted to fight against the enemy before America entered the War.

The custom Mustang was created through a collaboration between Ford Performance and Gittin’s RTR Vehicles. As for the car itself, the exterior was designed after the Hawker Hurricane plane, one of the most successful planes used in WWII. For power, this Mustang GT’s power has been increased up to 700 horsepower thanks to a Ford Performance supercharger. It also comes with an RTR carbon fiber widebody kit and Tactical Performance suspension.

The car will be debuted at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and then brought back to the United States for the Experimental Aircraft Association’s “The Gathering” event on July 26. During this event, the Mustang GT will be auctioned off to support EAA’s youth education programs.

Vaughn Gittin Jr. Tests Out His New 900 hp Mustang RTR

“Supporting young pilots through the EAA charity auction reflects Ford’s aviation history, tracing back to the company’s early days and the Arsenal of Democracy during WWII,” said Darrell Behmer, Ford Mustang design chief. “The Eagle Squadron Mustang GT build with Vaughn and the Ford design team is a great way to honor our heroes and keep the spirit of aviation alive for the next generation of American pilots.”

Whoever gets the winning bid on this Mustang will also get an all-inclusive package for two to attend the 2018 Ford Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit where they will take delivery of the car.

Over the span of several weeks, a senior woman and a child have died after being detained in federal immigration custody. These represent the latest in a series of deaths that have occurred since the Trump administration launched its “zero-tolerance” policy.

The child’s death was first reported on social media by Houston, Texas-based immigration attorney Mana Yegani, who tweeted that the child died after being released from the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas, which is run by the private prison company CoreCivic. Advocates and attorneys working in the state confirmed with Rewire.News that the child died after being released from the facility.

One Austin, Texas-based organizer told Rewire.News that the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) “confirmed a death occurred a few weeks ago.”

Katy Murdza, an employee of the American Immigration Council and the advocacy coordinator for the Dilley Pro Bono Project, said she did not have “permission at this time to share who provided the information.” But she did confirm the report. “We have heard that a child died after leaving the South Texas Family Residential Center (STFRC). We do not have information on the cause of death or information that confirms a connection between medical treatment at STFRC and this death,” Murdza said in an email.

Rewire.News could not confirm the child’s age; however, the Washington Post reported Wednesday she was a toddler.

Responding to reports of the child’s death, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) tweeted on Wednesday, “Reports that a child died in ICE custody at Dilley are false.” In an emailed statement to Rewire.News, the agency clarified that “ICE would not necessarily know what happens to individuals who have left ICE custody. That doesn’t make an allegation true, just impossible to refute. Only a death in custody would be considered an in-custody death.”

A representative from CoreCivic echoed ICE’s response, telling Rewire.News in an emailed statement that “there have been no deaths in custody at the South Texas Family Residential Center” and that “once the individuals in our care has left our facilities, we receive no further information about them.”

Poor medical care has long been an issue in detention, including at family detention centers like Dilley. In 2015, AILA and other organizations assisted ten mothers in filing complaints with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties and the Office of Inspector General because of the “severe suffering families” endured, including “poor access to and quality of care” and “questionable medical ethics.”

Mothers and their children waited up to 14 hours in the sun in order to be seen by medical staff, according to the complaint. Children were left in the care of guards, sometimes for days, if their mothers were transferred off-site for emergency care. One child who was vomiting blood was “told only to drink water,” the complaint said, and was not referred to external medical care for three days.

As Rewire.News recently reported, it is common for detained people experiencing illness, no matter how serious, to be told by officials to simply drink water. The same applies to children detained alongside their parents, as one formerly detained person told Rewire.News.

The child who left Dilley died allegedly as a “result of possible negligent care and a respiratory illness she contracted from one of the other children,” Yegani tweeted July 31.

CoreCivic told Rewire.News in a statement that the private prison company “does not provide medical or mental healthcare services or staffing at STFRC. The federal government’s ICE Health Service Corps (IHSC) is solely responsible for contracting, staffing, and oversight of any medical and mental health services provided at STFRC. CoreCivic staff at STFRC do not make medical or mental health treatment determinations and are trained to refer all detainee health or medical concerns, whether routine or acute, to facility medical staff for evaluation, triage, and treatment.”

News of the child’s death comes on the heels of Commander Jonathan White of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps testifying to Congress that he and the Office of Refugee Resettlement warned the Trump administration of the impact of its family separation policy at the border, raising concerns about “any policy which would result in family separation due to concerns we had about the best interest of the child as well about whether that would be operationally supportable with the bed capacity we had.” White said the separation of children from their parents “entails significant harm to children.”

“There’s no question that separation of children from parents entails significant potential for traumatic psychological injury to the child,” he said.

It is unclear how long after being released from Dilley the child died, but within a short period, there was an in-custody death at another CoreCivic-run detention center. ICE confirmed on Friday the death of a 62-year-old woman detained at California’s Otay Mesa Detention Center. Augustina Ramirez-Arreola, an immigrant from Mexico, died on July 26 while awaiting deportation.

Ramirez-Arreola was pronounced dead by medical staff at the hospital at approximately 10:45 p.m., according to a press release from ICE. Hospital staff identified the preliminary cause of death as complications from surgery. She had been transferred to the hospital earlier in the day for scheduled surgery to treat a heart abnormality, ICE said in the release.

A 2016 report from Human Rights Watch (HRW) revealed that most in-custody deaths are preventable and the result of “substandard medical care and violations of applicable detention standards.” The most dangerous ways ICE fails migrants in detention, according to HRW, are by not following up on symptoms that require assistance and not responding quickly to emergencies.

ICE previously told Rewire.News that when a person dies while in the agency’s custody, their “death triggers an immediate internal inquiry into the circumstances.” The summary document ICE eventually releases to the public is the result of a review conducted by ICE’s Office of Detention Oversight, established in 2009 as a result of reforms by the Obama administration after reports of human rights abuses and deaths in detention centers.

Ramirez-Arreola’s is the ninth in-custody death in fiscal year 2018, which began October 1, 2017. What is unknown is how many people die after being released from ICE custody.

In July 2016, Clara Long, the lead researcher on the HRW’s report about in-custody deaths, told Rewire.News that researchers need more information regarding deaths that occur just after migrants are released from ICE custody, such as the recent death of the child who left Dilley. Another example is Teka Gulema, an Ethiopian migrant detained at Etowah County Detention Center in Gadsden, Alabama, who was released from ICE custody in November 2015 while in the hospital after becoming paralyzed from a bacterial infection acquired in detention. He died in January 2016.

“One concern we have, and it’s a very big fear, is that there are multiple reports of folks who are released from ICE custody while in critical condition,” Long said in July 2016. “When they die, they are no longer counted as in-custody deaths [by ICE]. We’re worried that’s a loophole being exploited—and for obvious reasons, we don’t have a number in terms of how often this is happening.”

There are a lot of parents out there with college students who are entering final exam time. Whether it’s their first year or their senior year, there is still a lot of stress and little extra time to take care of life’s necessities.

This time of year is the perfect opportunity to send your student a care package. To take the hassle out of thinking what to include, we’ve provided a go-to list on what to put into the box! Remember to include extras since roommates will be looking to share!

Useful items

Let’s start with the necessary items first. Since it’s the end of the year, school supplies might be running short. Include a couple of pencils, pens, highlighters and sticky notes. If your child is moving out of the dorm or having to pack up all their belongings for the summer, consider buying things cheap since all these items could get thrown away in the end of the year cleanup.

And speaking of that, if deep cleaning will need to take place prior to heading out for the summer, add supplies to the package. This will prevent your student from having to run to the store while also juggling studying, packing, and sleeping.

Brainpower food

While chips and sweets may be fun to nibble on while pouring over books, it’s important your student maintains a healthy diet. Nuts—specifically walnuts—are a top food for brain health. Visit the Vending Nut Company in Fort Worth to create a custom nut combination specifically tailored for your child. If you can’t make it to their store, they also sell gift tins that can be shipped directly. Dried fruits, granola bars and bottles of water are also great options to include.

Fun food

In addition to healthy food, everyone loves a treat now and then. Finals are the perfect excuse to send a favorite treat! In addition to candy, consider treating them to themed iced cookies. You can order custom cookies featuring the college mascot or colors from local Fort Worth bakery, Haute Cakes and Cookies. If your student is local, Tiff’s Treats is another option and an easy way to send warm chocolate chip cookies and milk straight to the library!

Gift cards

In addition to the stress, the end of the year can get expensive. Between putting deposits down for new apartments and all the opportunities to go out with friends one last time, money can easily become tight. Include gift cards to your student’s favorite restaurants or coffee shops to help ease the financial burden.

Add a note

Finish the care package off with a note of encouragement. With tensions running high and stress from tests and papers piling up, a reminder of the support of your parents can mean a lot. No matter how old your child is, a sincere note can change their day. If your child is returning for the summer, remind them that you are happy to have them home. It can be hard to transition from the freedom of college back into the home with rules and curfews. Reminding them they are welcome and that you’re happy to have them will make the transition easier.

School is almost over and, with it, finals! If you have any favorites for care packages, make sure to let us know for our packages next year!
