Dr. Hadley Wickham is the Chief Scientist at RStudio and an Adjunct Professor of Statistics at University of Auckland, Stanford and Rice University. Hadley developed famous statistical analysis software packages for R (programming language) and co-wrote the book “R for Data Science.” He joined us at our headquarters in Mountain View to talk about the challenges of data science and we were able to ask him a few questions before:

How did you choose to enter the field of statistics and data science?

It was through the process of elimination. I started out in medical school, which in New Zealand you go straight into right after high school. I originally wanted to become a genetic engineer so I did medical school for three years before deciding it wasn’t for me. I went back to what I enjoyed in high school which was statistics and programming. This was before Data Science was prominent, so I double majored in statistics and computer science at The University of Auckland and it was the perfect combination because it’s the home of R.What inspired you to create tools for data scientists?During my PhD I was a statistics consultant and fellow PhD students from other departments would come to me with their data and ask me to help them with analysis. A big part of the struggle was getting the data into the right form for analysis – the actual statistical models seemed like the easier part. I loved programming and thought “maybe I could make this easier for people.” What advice would you give to someone who is starting out?Try and find some data that you are interested in. Whether you’re really into sports or knitting, try to find some data that’s of interest to you because that will help you get through the initial frustrations. If you get frustrated with it don’t give up, because everyone gets frustrated. You just have to take a break and remind yourself that you’re human.

Check out our Specialization Statistics with R or Mastering Software Development in R if you’re interested in learning more about Data Science.

“She’s just being in character” – Apurva Asrani on Kangna Ranaut’s latest round of ammunitions against Hrithik Roshan

Writer Apurva Asrani who had a very public spat with director Hansal Mehta and leading lady Kangna Ranaut over the creative credits of their new film together Simran has a unique explanation for Kangna’s latest outburst against Hrithik Roshan.

Says Apurva, “Well, she does play a borderline negative character in Simran. Keeping her image in mind, I wrote her a badass anti-heroine role. Maybe she’s still in character during promotions.”

Apurva has a point. A lot of Kangna’s colleagues from the entertainment industry Wonder why she has chosen to rake up her entire past from Aditya Pancholi to Hrithik Roshan, conveniently leaving out her messy liaison with Adhyayan Suman and the very public spat with his father Shekhar Suman.

Says a male colleague of Kangna’s, “Yeh bolti pehle hai aur sochti baad mein (she talks first and thinks later). I don’t think it is her idea to speak about Pancholi and Roshan as part of her film’s promotion. This must be her film’s marketing team’s idea. And she’s going along with it because she is as keen to have a hit as her director Hansal Mehta.”

Reacting to charges of anything-for-publicity, Apurva Asrani says, “I don’t know what she said. I don’t care either. A film will work or fail because of its content and its intent. I can assure people of Simran‘s content since I am creatively involved with it. The rest is in the hands of the ticket paying public.”

Salman Khan wants Katrina Kaif in Race 3?

The Race franchise grew monstrously bigger when Salman Khan decided to take over the leading man’s part from Saif Ali Khan who starred in the first two films in the series.

Having dropped directors Abbas-Mustan and opted for Remo d’Souza to helm Part 3, Salman is now hell-bent on bringing further box office heft to his ‘Race’ to the finishing line.

One now hears that Katrina Kaif is also being added to the cast of Race 3. Interestingly, the film already stars Jacqueline Fernandez as one of the leading ladies. Katrina and Jacqueline starred in Race and Race 2, respectively.

According to a source, “There are three leading men and two leading ladies in Race 3. So there’s a very strong role for another heroine. Salman Khan is very keen to get Katrina Kaif on board.”

Although the film is produced by Ramesh Taurani, we hear Salman Khan is calling all the shots on the project. According to a source close to the project, “When Salman decided to come on board for Race 3 he brought director Remo d’Souza with him and Abbas-Mustan who directed the first two films in the series were dropped. Salman has a say in every department of Race 3, from the casting to the music to the locations. If he wants Katrina in the film, she is bound to be in the film.”

Landscape Tips to Improve Your Property Value?

First impressions make for lasting impressions and hence, a beautifully landscaped home can add tons of value to your property. A buyer who visits your home for the first time will not fail to be impressed by its curb appeal and the efforts taken by you to care for your home.

Planning a landscape

Several reports and analysis have proved that a home with a well-planned landscape scores a major price advantage over a home without one. The home’s exteriors not only need to be clean and maintained but at the same time be warm and inviting to the visitors.

However, landscaping is not restricted to planting some shrubs randomly on your grounds; landscaping is a science and an art and it is only a manicured design that holds the attention of the buyer. There are several factors that go into planning a beautiful landscape and it is the overall impact of all these factors taken together that hikes the property value.

Landscape that adds value

The front yard generates curb appeal and the backyard offers functional value in a landscaped home. The front yard helps the landscape gardener to showcase his creativity and hence, more emphasis is placed on the aesthetics during its landscaping. So what are the factors to be considered to make the front yard a big draw to the visitor?

Front Yard Landscaping Tips:

The first aspect that comes into this process is to have a specific vision for your front yard; what needs to be included and in how much amounts. The yard that you plan needs to have some method amidst all the planting. You can start off by paying attention to the following details:

Give an edge to your lawn: This helps to give a neat and easy-to-maintain look to the yard. You can either create a physical edge through a steel, timber or brick fence or separate the lawn and the path neatly with the aid of a sharp spade.

Create partial sound and visual barriers: You can use plants to create partial visual and sound barriers against nosy neighbors or busy roads. The sense of privacy lent by this use of plants heightens the buyer’s impression of your house considerably.

Use plant species wisely: Go for plant diversity without going overboard. You want your yard to have a uniform look that will also be easy to maintain.

Shimmer with lush lawn: Shimmer the yard with a lush green lawn. You can try cost effective options for laying new lawns if you have large areas to cover.

Add splashes of color: You can plant vibrant flowering annuals to uplift the look of your garden area and also add beautiful planters to the entrance of your home.

Prune with restraint: Pruning helps to give the home a neat and cared for look; however, do not go overboard here too.

Backyard Landscaping Tips:

Though the landscaping of the backyard is distinct from the front yard it has to be given equal amount of attention. Following are some factors that assume importance here:

Trees to be planted: The trees for your backyard will depend upon the climate zone your area falls into. Your landscape gardener will know which trees work out best for your climate zone.

Pool or entertaining space: You have to decide between the two options depending upon the climate of your area and the amount of entertaining you shall be doing. Plan accordingly.

On a Concluding Note

All said and done, the time and money invested in your landscaping will not go in vain. It will definitely help buyers realize that indeed your home is a worth buying package.

Remember MySpace? The era of the “Top 8” and your BFF, “Tom.” Many of us deleted our profiles long ago, when we ditched the social media platform for a shiny, new Facebook. However, some have been using MySpace all along — and their music catalogs are in serious trouble. Or worse, gone forever.

As Redditors have pointed out, MySpace has permanently lost user files — a ton of them — over the years. One MySpace user brought the huge issue to light with the following statement:

About a year ago, all music on MySpace from 2015 and older stopped working. At first MySpace said they were working on the issue, but they eventually admitted they lost all the data (and apparently didn’t have backups?). See this thread for more details.

Consequence of Sound has since confirmed that MySpace lost a total of 50 million songs uploaded between 2003 and 2015. Anyone hoping to keep what they’ve uploaded to the platform better back it up immediately, if anything of their profile still remains.

MySpace’s Data Privacy Officer confirmed, “Due to a server migration, files were corrupted and unable to be transferred over to our updated site. There is no way to recover the lost data.”

Yikes.

Having spent the last three days going through the regulations and trying to source the required PPE equipment, it has become apparent that we are a long way off from opening as normal. The furlough regulations also complicate our partial opening.

This is the current situation:

• We will open on Monday the 8th June and Tuesday the 9th June to treat emergencies only. The type of treatment that we can deliver is highly restricted, so it may only be temporary (holding) treatment.

• Both days will be reduced hours from 9am until 4pm (not our normal opening hours).

• We will contact all of the patients who have called with problems during the lockdown to arrange an appointment. There will be pre-screening questions and a strict protocol for patients entering the practice.

• Patients will not be seen without an appointment. Please do not turn up at the practice – you will not be seen.

• If you have had a dental problem but not called to speak with Jeremy, or if you have had telephone advice but not been contacted by Monday 8th June, please call or email the practice.

• All routine dental appointments that had been arranged for this year (2020) have been cancelled. Please remove any future appointment dates from your diary.

• Patients who are given emergency appointments will have to follow a strict protocol. Final details are being decided at the moment but please expect:

o You will not be allowed to wait in the practice. We advise you to arrive a little early but please wait in your car or outside the practice. Please ring the bell at the designated time of your appointment and we should be able to take you straight through to the surgery.

o To avoid contact within the practice, appointment scheduling is critical. If you arrive late, we regret that we may not be able to see you.

o Do not bring anyone with you into the building. No one will be allowed to wait inside.

o Do not bring any bags or coats/jackets into the practice.

o WC facilities will be closed for access, so please make sure you use home facilities before leaving.

• From Wednesday 10th June the practice will go back into lockdown mode with telephone advice only. This will remain until further notice.

This is disappointing news, but at least we will be able to sort out emergency care for our patients.

Stay safe,

Jeremy and the team

Colorful Easter eggs are the most identifying feature of this holiday! Make your own with this easy and bright Paper Quilling Easter Egg Craft!

Most major holidays have theme colors – red, green and white for Christmas, orange and black for Halloween, green for St Paddy’s day and so on. But Easter is one holiday where colors don’t matter – and nothing proves this better than bright and colorful Easter eggs!

One of the best things kids love about an Easter egg hunt is ending up with a basket full of colored eggs – such a pretty sight! And that’s what we’ve decided to make today; not a basket of eggs in different colors, but a single egg with many colors!

This Paper Quilling Easter Egg craft is a great project for quilling beginners, since they can learn to make basic shapes like loose coils, tear drops and lens shapes. The rest of the craft is fairly simple, with the focus being on quilling. So if your kids have been wanting to give quilling a try, this is perfect for them!

Summertime vibes are alive with this fresh new tune from Young Franco!

Allow him to take you to the “Otherside” with Reva Devito and Golden Vessel as they ride a wave made of 100% groove. Cool, funky rhythms are met with buttery vocals that sound like they came straight out of a R&B track from the early 2000s. The result is worth obsessing over.

Perhaps you heard his feel-good remix for Charli XCX and Troye Sivan’s single “1999,” which we previously posted about. The seasoned producer has also crafted a string of stellar originals, all of which have led him to “Otherside.”

Locking in a refined style with tasteful drums, dreamy synths, and straight up melodic genius — Young Franco simply nails the production.

In this article, I will bring you an answer to the old question “What is the difference between coffee and espresso?”, some of you may even think that they are just the same right? After all, they come from the coffee plant.

Well no, there is quite a difference and I will teach you all you need to know in basic terms. Coffee is like Earth, whereas the Espresso is a continent. So, basically, coffee is a parent, and espresso is one of it’s type.

Most of you are searching for the difference between a regular coffee and an espresso. I suggest you to read the complete article carefully, and you will have your answer in detail.

First, we will address the individual parts, coffee, and espresso, just to point out the main differences from the start.

What is Coffee?

This beloved beverage has quite a history, these coffee beans have traveled all the way around the world and that’s why we have so many alternatives now.

The fruit from the coffee plant is actually similar to a cherry, but what makes the greatness is inside the seed.

Once the fruit is harvested, the seed or bean is extracted and then roasted, and once you grind it, that’s what we need for a cup of coffee. There are dozens of species of coffee plants, and each of these plants will make a different coffee bean, but also the way it is processed will change the flavor of the final product, giving us hundreds if not thousands of different possibilities.

Coffee Brewing Methods

Now we have so many flavors, so many beans, and different types of grind, but there is still one variant we are not taking into account – the brewing method. Often the boiling, steeping and dripping method outputs regular coffee, and the pressure method gives, an espresso. Most of the people are confused here in regular coffee and espresso. So, the basic and major difference is the, Method.

Brewing coffee, no matter the method, has one constant principle and this is the principle of infusing or the process of using hot water to take flavors and smells away from a product. Infusions (Tea) use this method as we all know, and coffee is not an exception.

Boiling method

The original and oldest known method is well, boiling water in a pot with a fire and getting your ground coffee in there, in a few minutes coffee will be ready, easy right? Well yes, but this will bring nothing special and burning the coffee is quite easy if you use this method. But a few centuries back, without electricity or a simple way to heat up water (other than starting a fire), this was the easy way to go, and it was also quite practical if you had to travel.

But luckily, we have evolved from this rather primitive method, if you are reading this article, chances are you own some kind of coffee machine, or at least have seen countless of them in coffee shops, from electric modern machinery to the old but effective mechanical machines.

Steeping method

Now, we will meet the steeping method, which is still infusing but made easy. Imagine you took the pot from the method above, and you found a way to just separate the ground coffee from the liquid once your infusion was ready, well that is basically it.

If you know the French press you know what steeping is, mix hot water and ground coffee in the press, wait some time, based on how hot the water was, then use the press and well, press the ground coffee to the bottom (yes big surprise uh?). This squishes the ground coffee and gives you an amazing final flavor because of this.

Of course, you won’t be able to use a fine grind or will then have residues in the coffee because of the holes in the press.

Dripping method

This is perhaps the most common method used nowadays, because of all the electric coffee makers out there. You must have seen those coffee makers that need a coffee filter and you put the ground coffee on it? Well, that’s dripping, as the name suggests.

With electricity, the process of heating up water is no longer a problem, the new drip machines just need you to put the filter, the ground coffee and the water in the machine, and it will do the rest.

The principle behind this is simple, water goes into the ground coffee and starts soaking it, the water gets infused with the coffee, the filter stops the ground coffee from falling but keeps the liquid flowing, and there we go, you now have coffee, this method just needs a few time to fill a cup or the whole kettle.

Pressure method (Espresso)

This is where things get even better and we start addressing the title of this article directly. This method is the one used for espresso, so yes, espresso is coffee (in case you had any doubts), but what makes espresso unique and different from all the methods above is the amount of time it takes to be ready.

With all the previous methods you would have to wait a few minutes to get that cup of coffee, with the pressure method well, once the water is hot and ready, you will have the finished product in a few seconds.

What makes this method special is that the hot water goes into the fine ground coffee at a really high pressure with high temperature, and the infusion not only takes seconds, but it becomes quite powerful, that’s why espresso has that distinctive flavor. This brings us to the next question.

What is Espresso?

As mentioned above, espresso is coffee brewed in a unique way, and this unique way makes, well, unique coffee, espresso tends to have a more intense flavor, even tho it’s brewed in a shorter time.

So espresso can be described as intense coffee, brewed with pressure at a high temperature in a short time, but also the ground coffee has to be fine.

Know Crema

Another big characteristic of espresso is the crema, and the crema really talks about the coffee you are about to drink, erm sorry, espresso. The crema is the foam that forms on top of the liquid when you prepare an espresso, and the information it gives is about the age of the coffee used and the strength of the coffee.

For the age, the amount is to be observed, If the crema is abundant it means the coffee is fresh, while with less crema it means it’s a bit older. For the strength, the color is to be noticed, usually, the rule of thumb is, the darker the crema, the stronger the espresso.

Types of Espresso Shots

Espresso is often served in shots, and in this little section I will mention the main ones with the measures you can go here to find some really nice information on this with images to guide you:

Espresso Shot: The classic shot is usually 30 ml, this is a generic measure and what you should expect from a shot.

Doppio Shot: Also called a double, is just double the amount of the original shot, so two shots in a cup, 60 ml.

Ristretto: This would be the grown-up measure, although the quantity is less, 22ml, the liquid is a concentrated mix of coffee, so expect a lot of strength in this kind of shots.

Lungo: This is the relaxed measure and it is the one that gets closer to being brewed coffee, this is 60ml of less concentrated espresso, so expect a softer drink in these ones.

Macchiato: This is a doppio shot with a dot of foamed milk to soften it up and make it more creamy.

Café Noisette: This is similar to the Macchiato but contains more milk, again a Doppio shot but this time instead of just a dot of foamed milk, we will add 30ml of steamed milk, making it even more creamy and nicer.

Espresso Drinks

You may not like espresso by itself or with a little milk, so here I will show you some of the popular espresso-based drinks, some of which you will probably have heard of already.

Cappuccino: Classic drink, that great triple layered presentation just makes everyone fall in love, and it packs quite a punch with some creamy flavor as well, a doppio shot plus 60 ml of steamed milk with 60 ml of foamed milk on top.

Dry Cappuccino: Maybe you dislike the amount of milk in a regular cappuccino, so here you get a doppio plus 60ml of foamed milk, easy.

Americano: Another classic amongst coffee aficionados, the Americano is a doppio shot with 90ml of hot water to soften it up, it still packs the double shot punch.

Affogato: Just a delight that, surprisingly, not a lot of people have tried but I highly recommend, here you get a doppio with 90ml of vanilla ice cream, double rush on this one, more like a dessert in my opinion.

Breve: Creamy delight, with a doppio shot and 90ml of half and half, you will get an amazing creamy mix of greatness.

Mocha: Chocolate is just amazing with coffee, some blends even remind you of the flavor, this is a mix that was meant to be, doppio shot, 50ml of chocolate, 30ml of steamed milk.

Café con Hielo: Now with this, I can relate, if you live in a really hot place and having a hot coffee sometimes feels like a torture to your body, this is just amazing, who would have thought that coffee could be so refreshing, get enough ice in a cup, pour 50ml of espresso on top, voila.

Con Panna: Another delightful treat, more of a dessert, this contains a doppio shot and 90ml of whipped cream.

Flat White: This is great if you love the milky goodness of a coffee drink, a doppio shot and 120ml of steamed milk, it will have a soft taste and amazing texture.

Latte: Another classic, in my opinion, this is just a perfect presentation with a great flavor and texture and a milky taste, a doppio shot, 300ml of steamed milk, and the real skill comes here, 2ml of foamed milk, just to make that top perfect.

So to wrap this up, the difference between espresso and coffee is how you make it, or the brewing method, espresso is, as the name suggests, a pressure-made coffee, while brewed coffee is usually an infusion made over more time.

The Caffeine In Brief

There is a question with a rather simple answer, always going around the coffee world, especially on people starting to discover this drink’s amazing benefits: “Which contains more caffeine, brewed coffee or espresso?”.

The answer depends on where you approach the question from; if you take a shot of espresso and a cup of coffee the amount of liquid on each is quite different, so you could say, in this case, that the cup of coffee contains more caffeine since an average cup has around 240 ml of coffee, while an espresso shot has 30 ml.

If you approach it the other way tho, in volume, you will find that the espresso contains way more caffeine per milliliter. In the end, it all depends on the amount you drink, think of it as the espresso being a form a concentrated coffee in caffeine terms.

Equipment

Now in this section, I will mention some of the most common forms of equipment for each method, so you can start brewing coffee today.

How To Make Regular Coffee

For the Boiling method, well, use a stove and a pot, yes, that simple, when pouring out the coffee you may want to use a filter tho.

For the Steeping method, I recommend the classic French press, it’s easy to use and quite easy to clean, plus the process of pressing the coffee yourself is quite unique, just be sure to use it correctly.

For the Dripping method, you will find, and I mean it, thousands of different drip machines with a lot of different prices, it is possible to make a little system yourself and use this method, simply pouring boiling water on top of a filter with ground coffee that leads to a kettle or pot.

If you don’t like the hassle, just buy a regular electric coffee machine, and get some good ground coffee (or grind the beans yourself, which is also quite entertaining, you will need a coffee grinder for this tho).

How To Make Espresso Coffee

And for the pressure method, or to make espresso, there are some great espresso machines out there, even some that are over $10,000 USD, but this much is not needed, I personally use Nespresso because it is extremely easy to use for your home and it’s just convenient, plus I believe the quality of the outcome is quite nice.

If you like mechanical machines you can buy an AeroPress, which makes great coffee and is quite fun to use.

At the end of the day, whatever is more convenient for you, or whatever you like the better is the best, get good quality ground coffee, and most of the time you will be able to make good quality coffee with most of the machines out there.

And to Wrap it Up

So it’s been a long road now, right? but some may still be asking themselves “Okay, so, espresso is the same as coffee correct?” well, espresso is coffee yes, but it is unique to the different brewing methods, so we can say that it is just a different outcome from the same source, but don’t worry, you don’t have to like one better than the other, both brewed coffee and espresso are great, and they, in my personal opinion, will give you what’s needed depending on the situation.

Check out this video if you like a more graphic explanation.

Maybe you just want a quick shot to boost your energy and feel alive, or maybe you want to have that cup of coffee for 30 mins just to enjoy it, coffee is like wine, the best coffee for every one of us is different, so the one you like, is the best .

If a gun was a night club

Second week for PC, eighth for console – Xur is here again! This week you’ll find him on the EDZ, and he’s carrying the Graviton Lance (Pulse Rifle), Young Ahamkara’s Spine (Hunter Arms), Mask of the Quiet One (Titan Helm), Nezarec’s Sin (Warlock Helm).

So apparently the Mask of the Quiet One looks (and I quote) like a “blobby mess” when settings are low on PC, so take note and don’t Drestiny on a PC that runs like a potato. That aside, it’s actually a very good helm that shares ability recharge buffs just like the Warlock helm this week, with some minor difference. Mainly that you’ll have to take damage with the Titan helm, and deal it with the Warlock helm. Sounds about right if you ask me. Possibly the weakest this week is the Hunter arms, Young Ahamkara’s Spine. Whilst looking rather badass, it merely increases duration of tripmines which aren’t in a great spot right now. It does, however, mark an enemy that gets hit by it but let’s be honest, how many trip mines have you voluntarily walked into lately?

LOOT OF THE WEEK – Mask of the Quiet One/Graviton Lance

My choice of the week is split, sort of. The Graviton Lance, on console, is okay. Whilst hand cannons and pulse rifles are still figuring out their place on consoles they’ve hit the ground running on PC and the gun is noticeably more useful on the mouse and keyboard setup. What gives it hope on console is that it sounds one of the most impressive guns in the entire game on all systems – it really does sound like a high-tempo dance track when you’re letting off shots repeatedly. That said, there’s a ton of utility so outside of PC the Titan helm makes a strong case. I’ll leave this one for you guys to fight out…

I. Overview of Theories of AnarchismPolitics, in all its forms, has failed. The notion that we can safely and successfully hand over the management of our daily lives and the setting of priorities to a political class or elite is thoroughly discredited. Politicians cannot be trusted, regardless of the system in which they operate. No set of constraints, checks, and balances, is proved to work and mitigate their unconscionable acts and the pernicious effects these have on our welfare and longevity.Ideologies – from the benign to the malign and from the divine to the pedestrian – have driven the gullible human race to the verge of annihilation and back. Participatory democracies have degenerated everywhere into venal plutocracies. Socialism and its poisoned fruits – Marxism-Leninism, Stalinism, Maoism – have wrought misery on a scale unprecedented even by medieval standards. Only Fascism and Nazism compare with them unfavorably. The idea of the nation-state culminated in the Yugoslav succession wars.It is time to seriously consider a much-derided and decried alternative: anarchism.Anarchism is often mistaken for left-wing thinking or the advocacy of anarchy. It is neither. If anything, the libertarian strain in anarchism makes it closer to the right. Anarchism is an umbrella term covering disparate social and political theories – among them classic or cooperative anarchism (postulated by William Godwin and, later, Pierre Joseph Proudhon), radical individualism (Max Stirner), religious anarchism (Leo Tolstoy), anarcho-communism (Kropotkin) and anarcho-syndicalism, educational anarchism (Paul Goodman), and communitarian anarchism (Daniel Guerin). The narrow (and familiar) form of political anarchism springs from the belief that human communities can survive and thrive through voluntary cooperation, without a coercive central government. Politics corrupt and subvert Man’s good and noble nature. Governments are instruments of self-enrichment and self-aggrandizement, and the reification and embodiment of said subversion.

Artwork is a mode of creative expression, and the forms are numerous. Indian art forms have constantly evolved through a number of years. Different eras of Indian artwork (Modern Era, Contemporary Artwork) portray the aroma of expression and beauty.

Indian Art in Modern Era

During the colonial era, Art from the Impressionists (say, around 1880) up until the 1960’s or 70’sWestern influences began influencing Indian art. Some painting styles employed Western composition ideas, with viewpoint and practicality to epitomize Indian themes. Some artists such as Jamini Roy deliberately drew motivation from folk art.

Contemporary Indian Art

Art from the 1960’s or 70’s up until this very minute is Contemporary Art. Contemporary art – collectively – is much more socially conscious than any previous era has been. A whole lot of art from the last 30 years has been connected with one issue or another: feminism, multiculturalism, globalization, bio-engineering and AIDS awareness all come readily to mind as subject matter.

Contemporary art was originally a blend of styles before it became recognizable on its own. The work of contemporary artists is a dynamic combination of materials, methods, concepts, and subjects that challenges traditional boundaries and defies easy definition. Contemporary design did borrow a few elements from Modernism and Postmodernism, but it also gathered ideas from many other styles such as Art Deco, De-constructivism, Futurism and more. Contemporary art has much variation in its interiors, it loves curves. Contemporary styles tend to favor simple, uncluttered spaces with smooth, clean lines and artistic flair.

This year Toyota capped off what looks like the end of the modern LMP1 era, from Audi vs everybody to Audi vs Peugeot to Audi vs Porsche to Porsche vs Toyota to Toyota vs itself. Among all of these vehicles, let’s remember the one that most sounded like a pod racer: the Toyota TS030.

Driving around to see houses lit up in holiday lights is a time-honored tradition in many families. The twinkle of hundreds of thousands of tiny lights brings out the child in all of us.

If you’re looking for more than just your average neighborhood light display this year, then you’ve come to the right place. We have scoured the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex for the most awe-inducing spectacles in 2017! Grab your coat and gloves, or if it is a typical North Texas Christmas, a light fleece, and venture out to these family-friendly exhibits!

Historic Grapevine Light Displays

There’s a reason Grapevine is considered the “Christmas Capital of Texas.” With three different nights dedicated to decking the halls, there’s no reason to miss out on the excitement. While the Christmas tree at City Hall is lit just after Thanksgiving, there’s still time to catch the Parade of Lights and the Twinkle Light Boat Parade.

The Parade of Lights in is the largest lighted Christmas parade in North Texas, and will feature more than 100 lighted floats and marching bands. If that isn’t enough, head to Lake Grapevine to watch boats decked out in holiday décor, and a lights parade from the Twin Coves Marina to Silver Lake Marina. Each event is free and open to the public.

Sparkling Nights in Addison

Walk off those extra holiday pounds by wandering around the Vitruvian Park’s holiday spectacle in Addison. Twelve acres of the park have been decorated with twinkling lights that are just begging to be explored. Weekends in December will also feature food trucks, live music, and holiday shopping villages. Bring the kids for free pictures with Santa, and to visit with the local police and fire department, too!

Gift of Lights in Fort Worth

Ever dream of hitting the Texas Motor Speedway? Well, here’s your opportunity! Cruise around the raceway through the Gift of Lights, and experience over 150 new light displays this year. At the end of the tour, explore Santa’s Village for family-friendly activities, including photos with Santa. Admission is $25 per car; however, if you bring an unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots, you receive a $5 discount. The event benefits multiple local charities, and is open daily from 6pm-10pm.

Christmas in the Square – Frisco

Head to Frisco Square to experience the largest choreographed holiday lights and music display in North Texas. Running daily from 6pm-10pm, visitors can bask in the glow of over 175,000 lights on display. To put this number in perspective, it takes over 11.5 miles of wiring and 8 miles of extension cords to pull off this show. If you’re longing for a white Christmas, you can even experience “snow flurries” every fifteen minutes in the Square on Fridays and Saturdays. And, finally, test your skating skills on the outdoor rink!

Prairie Lights – Grand Prairie

Drive through more than four MILLION lights sets along a two-mile path at the Lynn Creek Park on Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie. Halfway through the drive, hop out of the car to wander around the Holiday Village that features food, gifts, a snow maze and lighted forest.

After enjoying the stopover, you get back in the car to experience the grand finale of the display, including an animated light tunnel. Bring the kids to snap a photo with Santa as well. Purchase tickets online to save $5 off admission per vehicle.

The North Texas region is full of holiday cheer this year! No matter where you live in the metroplex, there is a holiday light spectacular nearby. Didn’t see one of your favorites on our list? Leave us a comment and tell us where else we should check out!
