Keep in mind that Ubuntu's power management does harm to laptop HD, do remember to use hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda to stop Load_Cycle_Count growing.
Check using
smartctl -a /dev/sda | grep Load_Cycle_Count
Assume you have a SATA HD.
In Firefox profile folder, in this case ~/.mozilla/firefox/xq9kcegy.default, places.sqlite keeps all bookmarks and browsing history.
I just found I have 43XXX records in moz_places table, 13XX in moz_inputhistory. It seems that I need to slim it.
Try the sqlite manager addon for Firefox, it rocks.
I set keep history to 90 days in my case.
Use sqlite3 places.sqlite 'VACUUM'; to shrink the sqlite database file. You can see the performance improvements.

Ubuntu Breezy -- background image from art.gnome.org. Desktop 2, with GVim open, is here. Both panels (topand bottom) can be hidden with a click on one of the end buttons, to maximise the available space.
This is my Ubuntu 8.10 desktop. I used AWN for the navigation bar at the bottom, Conky for the system stats and I made the background in Gimp.
