a picture of my new linux OS working - I've wanted to try linux for ages but never managed to get an install all the way through, usually falling at the hurdle of configuring a thing called 'X windows' without which the OS is basically nothing more than a command line...this new (well to me) 'distro' (flavour) of linux, Ubuntu, enables you to download a disc which you can run on your machine and see whether linux will work with your hardware (without having to install anything) - it also enables you to then install linux from a nice graphical desktop space rather than some strange geek hell...and you can even keep your windows and have a 'dual boot machine' which is what I've got now, though I haven't had to boot into windows since i installed it...

My working environment in addition to OS X. I barely use Windows, just for testing purpose, or run some commercial software only available on Windows now.
All set up, including twinview. It's much easier to install nvidia-settings rather than edit xorg.conf yourself described in Ubuntu forum. The only thing no good is I have to switch back and forth if I put D620 on the docking station.
I don't want to customize the fonts, look & feel, especially to be a fake Mac OS X. Maybe I will smooth the fonts but never do something about the theme, waste of time. Think good look and feel, use OSX.
Cisco VPN client has also worked, but no GUI. It doesn't matter to me.
I don't even want to use my Macbook for a while. It's full of fun to work under Ubuntu. Playing with Compiz Fusion:)
I will make a list of apps to install after installing Ubuntu from USB stick.
BTW: Remember to install Dropbox!

I made this using the GIMP Image Editor in Ubuntu 8.04.
Its not the best I can do, but its my first actual attempt at using GIMP. While somewhat similar to Photoshop, they aren't as similar as many people think.
Enjoy!

Dessert at Ubuntu restaurant in Napa, California, May 24, 2009. From foreground to background: candied Orion fennel, whipped yogurt, fennel pollen cake, apple slices, honey ice cream, more cake. Not shown: dabs of meyer lemon curd and another sauce.
Update on 2/22/10: Alas, the photo above needs to be placed into a museum, as dessert wizard Deanie Fox -- who was most likely responsible for the design of the above dessert -- has left Ubuntu and has started working at Manresa in the South Bay (coverage at Eater SF).
i've been using Ubuntu for a few days now, only a few problems left to work out (dual monitors, forward/backward buttons on mouse). But, other than that, it's been great!

Installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 from a USB pen drive alongside the existing Windows install. Haven't tried it yet but apparently everything should work.
