RAMSEY ABBEY PLANS of HOUSE and GATEHOUSE

Reproduced by permission of the Controller of H.M. Stationery Office from the Report of the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, Hunts.

After the dissolution of the monastery in 1539Sir Richard Williams, alias Cromwell, the crowngrantee, merely used the monastic buildings as asource of profit, by selling the building material.During the third quarter of the 16th century Gonvilleand Caius College, King's College and Trinity College,Cambridge, were all very largely built of these materials. (fn. 71) The towers of Ramsey (fn. 72) and Godmanchester (fn. 73) parish churches were built of them, and the gateway atHinchingbrooke is thought to have been taken fromRamsey. The miserere stalls in Over church and stallsin Somersham church also came from Ramsey (fn. 74) and nodoubt much of the material found its way into thewalls of the neighbouring houses. (fn. 75)

The Cromwells continued to use Ramsey Abbey asa quarry well into the 17th century, but during thelast few years of the 16th or the first year or two of the17th century Sir Henry Cromwell seems to havebegun the present house which he is said to haveused as a summer residence. (fn. 76) His son, Sir Oliver, lived at Hinchingbrooke until, owing to financial difficulties, he sold it to Sir Sydney Montagu in 1627(q.v.). He then took up his residence at Ramsey,a comparatively small building. Ramsey Abbey Houseat that time consisted of the eastern part of thepresent building, three stories in height, facing north, with the present four-storied towers at the north-eastand north-west corners. Forming the main easternportion of the basement of that house is the lower partof a large rectangular building, 68 ft. by 23 ft. (internalmeasurements) running east and west which has nowbeen cut up into various rooms. It dates from themiddle of the 13th century and obviously was someportion of the monastic buildings. It is divided intosix bays by buttresses, and around its internal walls isa fine 13th-century wall arcade composed of mouldedtrefoiled arches with moulded and foliated capitalsand moulded bases, now sadly mutilated. The westwall of the building is thicker than the other walls andis possibly of the 12th century. There were doorwayson each side in the second bay from the west; thaton the north belongs to the time of the building of thehouse and that on the south, now blocked, is of the13th century. The original windows were above thelevel of the surviving part of the building; the remainsof only one can be seen in the modern corridor. Untilrecently this building has been taken to be themonastic refectory which is known to have been rebuilt in the middle of the 13th century, but it haslately been suggested that it is more probably theLady Chapel, projecting eastward from the northtransept, in the same position as the Lady Chapel isknown to have stood at Peterborough. (fn. 77)

In 1839 the house was considerably altered andenlarged from designs by Blore. A wing was added onthe west side and a new north front was built betweenthe towers some 10 ft. northward of the old front, apierced parapet and a new porch being also added.

At the end of the corridor on the ground floor is alate 13th-century figure in grey marble which is supposed to represent Ailwin the founder of RamseyAbbey. The figure has a beard and curled hair andwears a civil dress with a long cloak. He holds twokeys and a wand in his right hand and his left isplaced across his chest. Over the head is a trefoiledcanopy and above are angels holding the soul in asheet. The feet rest on a lion. In the basement is alate 16th-century door said to have been broughtfrom Biggin House, which has an oval boss in themiddle bearing the initials H.C. for Henry Cromwell, brother of Sir Oliver Cromwell.

Staff from Maryland Department of Natural Resources use the Susquehanna Flats near Havre de Grace, Md., as a classroom while leading a workshop to learn how to identify and monitor various species of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) that live in the Chesapeake Bay on July 25, 2016. A healthy patch of underwater grasses provides food and habitat for animals like fish and crabs, reduces shoreline erosion, and improves water quality by slowing the current and helping sediment filter out of the water column.
