Screengrab of the Flickr spam message I got.
I was trying to upload a screengrab to illustrate a blog post I was writing, as I've done thousands of times, only Flickr wouldn't let me complete the description because it stated I was including a URL used frequently by spammers.
I can't write the URL here, but it was for StumbleUpon's URL shortening service, which sounds like "Super", with a ".PR" top-level domain suffix.
It's irritating that Flickr doesn't run a fast check to detect where the URL forwards TO, instead of banning all shortened URLs. I understand the issues with difficulty of policing forwarding URLs, but I've been using Flickr for years, I'm a paid "PRO" user, and they should have an extremely high level of trust in the quality of my content by now - so, this automated rule blanket-limiting my usage is mildly irritating.
With testing, I see that other top URL shortning services are also banned on Flickr. Sigh.

Url parse
What's on the whiteboard today before I wipe it?
Note using REST as an url. In there is also a breakdown of a URL into
*scheme
*authority
*path
*query
*fragment
I found the w3 specs (rfc3987) on this and they a nice regex to parse the beasts.
^(([^:/?#]+):)?(//([^/?#]*))?([^?#]*)(\?([^#]*))?(#(.*))?
What I found was the thing failed for the examples given. Nothing critical it just couldn't parse somthing like
'scheme + authority + path'
Using a regex on a url yeilds the following ...
'... scheme = $2 authority = $4 path = $5 query = $7 fragment = $9 ...'
and the full extraction of data is something like ...
'... $1 = http: $2 = http $3 = //www.ics.uci.edu $4 = www.ics.uci.edu $5 = /pub/ietf/uri/ $6 = $7 = $8 = #Related
...
Nice. You don't need to to any other parsing the components of an url just fall out. So can you guess what parts of this example match the above breakdown?
'... foo://example.com:8042/over/there?name=ferret#nose ...

So this is really just a funny story. Sarah was googling our family and found a page that mentioned me and my PDI partners, Glenn and Richard. She showed me the page and I asked her what the site was. She squinted at the screen and said "Theo scar site?"
I checked it out to figure out why a site like that would mention us. Then we just cracked up for the next ten minutes.
