Well unless you live in a more fortunate part of the country the misty crisp Autumn we all imagine has pretty much been hijacked by blustery wind and rain. I don't know why I'm surprised, it pretty much happens every year now.
Thank goodness there has been some lovely sunsets and sunrises recently, this was Christchurch Quay a couple of weeks ago.

Unless one decides to remain locked inside one's personal music, the murmur within the bus brings the sounds of so many different voices and the stories they share for just a short lapse of the morning commute. Looking outside also gives a chance to the Olympus to show how this Vespa managed to crawl to the warmth of the front line under the sun.

Some more shots of the Wood Stork that visited Harrisburg, PA. in June. Extremely rare here and unless I go to Florida, it us unlikely that I'll ever see another one in the wild.

Unless having reason to doubt. Sometimes, people just walk into the picture. Sometimes, this leads to a short chat. If it is a lady, I would tell her that her presence had tremendously improved the shot. Always worked, so far. Leica M8, Elmar (collapsible) 4/90.
The glorious Glass mountains of west Texas, just off hwy 90 between Marathon and Alpline. This is about as Texas as it gets. Capped by Permian-aged Capitan limestone, about 260 million years old.
In Texas, unlike other states, these glorious locations are all on private property. So the highway is about as close as you can get, unless you know the rancher.

…unless you’re a bird.
I adore these bright translucent berries. Bittersweet nightshade is a slender perennial vine or semi-woody shrub throughout our wetlands area. Mystery writers might adore these berries, too. This isn't as poisonous as belladonna. More than 30 species of birds eat the berries.
Unless it happens to be the government's land! If that's the case then don't even think about landing here!
This was shot somewhere in the Oregon Coast range back in 2007. Going through some old photos and came across it.
Now that I think about it I guess it's nice of the government to tell me where I can go? There's no way I could figure it out for myself and we certainly wouldn't want to damage this prime piece of dirt!

Unless you happen to be my Dad, winter has given us it's first real warning today.
Most of us let out a quiet groan as we woke to see that we'd need to pull the shovels out and clear away the walkways and driveways.
I'm pretty sure that my Dad woke up this morning and immediately jumped into the snow and started making angels.
I'm sure he's giddy as can be today.
As for me, well I think I'll try to live in denial just a little longer.
Hope everyone has had a good day.

She was born in Ireland and was originally thought to be a labrador/collie cross - but our dog trainer thought she is a 'Heinz 57 Varieties' with some Lurcher and Staffie thrown in! Whatever she is, she is adorable!
She is now nine-and-a-quarter years old and as full of fun and energy as ever! Oh yes, she can also run like the wind and her trainer said she's the fastest dog he's ever seen except for a greyhound!

Zickefoose isn't exactly a common name, unless you're from certain parts of West Virginia. It's pretty rare in Washington, but not unknown.
While I can't find a grave for him, the oldest bit of news I came across for him is from December 1954:
Tractor Victim is Recovering
"A logging accident near Cusick nearly claimed the life of Charles Zickefoose, Springdale, who is recovering satisfactorily in a Newport hospital today, after suffering a fractured pelvis and a badly lacerated right arm that required 14 stitches Saturday."
Zickefoose was loading a tractor onto the icy bed of a truck when the machine slipped off, pinning Zickefoose in a shallow ditch. His brother, Phillip, dug him out and drove him tot he hospital."
With a bit of backwards digging, I see that Phillip was born in 1937 to James and Erma. James was from Charley and Myrtle in 1911. They were all, it seems, Seventh Day Adventists.
Following the near death experience, the brothers Zickefoose, along with their father, recorded two mining claims near Colville in 1957.
While Phillip lived until 2003, I can't find anything on when (or if?) Charles died, though he is mentioned as still living in Phillip's obituary. They also apparently have/had two sisters.

With the help of TomTom and Google earth, places like this back in the day would be driven right past, unless you REALLY knew the area. While waiting the day before for the Dakota & Iowa to roll north from Hawarden, I did a little map searching on the GPS to find all of D&I Sioux River crossings. Most were pretty cut and dry to access, but this one would need a little research. Although the TomTom showed a road off the main road heading in the right direction, it cuts short about a 1/2 mile from the tracks. However, a look at the satellite imagery and there is a rutted "river access" road lead to, well, here! We drove in and there was a ranch at the point where the river road begins, with no gate!. So, through the muck and grass the Civic goes with a prize at the end. We shot the northbound that day which I posted earlier this year. The next day we returned for the southbound for this shot. The river is behind me with the train on the approach to the main span. The train will be back in Iowa in a moment and the cross the next bridge into Hudson, SD.

We took a drive on a gravel road today. Normally, the gravel road is wide enough for two vehicles to pass. Today, there was one lane plowed down the middle and that was it. We drove down the road about 4 miles and had to turn around because the road was turning to pure mud.
On the way back, we seen a white thing on the top of a dead tree. Driving closer, it turned out to be a Peregrine Falcon. It stayed on the tree for me to take its photo, (ok, maybe 50 photos). It was calling out and another Peregrine, down in the valley below, would call out back to this one. We stayed maybe 15 minutes with the Peregrine before it finally took off towards the other one.
The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest living creature on the planet. (unless a bear is chasing me) Being clocked in a dive at over 249 mph. It preys on other birds such as pigeons, song birds, ptarmigan and grouse. It is also the most widespread of any bird species in the world.
Unless they move, these colourful little frogs are often quite hard to spot in the dim light of the rainforest.
Unless you know the size of a cattail spike (in this case, about the size of a hotdog) you can't imagine how small this little red-eared slider turtle was. It was catching some sun on a cool day in February 2020. Luckily he was also reflecting.

Unless the number jumped out at you in yesterday's post you may not have even realized there was a special unit on the point of CSXT train M218 (Selkirk to Philadelphia Greenwich Yard unit auto racks) so here's a wider take featuring 1869 in its special Chesapeake and Ohio Railway heritage paint scheme. The fifth out of 21 total, this GE ES44AC-H was blt. Jul. 2012 as CSXT 3061 and received the number 1869 in August 2023 when it was repainted into this commemorative scheme.
The train is emerging from the south portal of the 2640 ft long tunnel into a light rain after passing beneath the plain inside the United States Miltary Academy at West Point, which is also the oldest continuously occupied military post in the nation. Situated at MP 47.2 besides modern day CSXT's busy River Sub mainline the first West Shore train passed through this bore on June 4, 1883.
The Gothic stone portal of the tunnel blends in with the imposing crenellated parapets of Thayer Hall which rises above, the creation of which was the result of a 1903 design competition to improve and expand the Academy at West Point. The successful design proposal, won by Cram, Goodhue, and Ferguson, created Thayer Hall as a riding arena, the largest masonry indoor riding facility in the world, at that time. By the end of the Second World War, horse and mounted Calvary training was obsolete and no longer relevant to the mission of West Point. Between 1955 and 1959, the riding hall was repurposed to house 350,000 square feet of classrooms, laboratories, assembly spaces and academic offices.
It is named for Sylvanus Thayer, the 33rd graduate of the academy in 1808 who was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers. In the War of 1812 he commanded the defense of Norfolk, VA and built the installations to defend the port. After studying and touring Europe he returned in 1817 and was made the 5th Superintendent of the Academy by President James Monroe, a post he held for 16 years in which time he created the first college of engineering in the United States.
The similarly styled stone building at left is Mahan Hall, buit in 1974 and home to the academy's Department of Civil & Mechanical Engineering and Department of Systems Engineering. Named for Dennis Hart Mahan who graduated as first in the class of 1824. In 1832 he became chairman of the academy's engineering department and he remained on the faculty until his death 39 years later.
